Control

Overgrown Tales was captured in February 2011 at Chicago's Electrical Audio studios by legendary engineer Steve Albini (Nirvana, The Pixies, Joanna Newsom, Gogol Bordello), whilst the decade's most extreme snowstorm battered the city.  

The Crooked Fiddle Band's debut album hones their trademark high energy, twisted approach, colliding various violin traditions with rocking rhythms. Jess Randall's fiddle creaks and groans before launching into a whirlwind of ecstatic melody, whilst the rhythm section of guitar, double bass and drum kit drive some pounding and intricate patterns. In years of festival shows, the band has built a solid reputation for being 'the masters and mistress of mood' turning the dancefloor into a writhing mass of bodies. Overgrown Tales captures this energy and expands it into a beast more cinematic - the titles suggesting that each track is the embodiment of an modern folk story, crooked but underpinned by genuine emotion.

Last year the four piece band released their debut EP on Sydney’s Plastic World, a perfectly measured mix of summery synth pop and tropical disco. It was called "Together", and it brought unity and feelings of shared happiness to nightclubs and pool parties everywhere.

"Altruisme" is their latest single, and another sure sign that Retiree are only looking out for us. The track combines vintage machine drum rhythms, new wave guitar licks, the sounds of the sea, and some haunting French vocals to create a slow funk jam.
