One might argue that Ritalin serves a similar societal role to Soma in Huxley’s "Brave New World," offering chemical management of mood, behavior, and productivity, though it is self-administered rather than mandated by the state. Ritalin is prescribed to enhance focus and calm, but its use (and misuse) can also produce euphoria, dependence, and withdrawal symptoms, echoing some psychological mechanisms attributed to Soma’s fictional role. However, Ritalin is a real stimulant with known physical and mental risks, while Soma is a literary creation imagined as uniformly pleasurable and socially pacifying—making their “purpose” comparable mainly in philosophical critique, not medical reality.

Qualia [singular qualia; from Latin qualis = of what kind], subjective properties perceived independently of the associated object; first-order phenomenal properties (see below). In the philosophy of mind, qualia are the classic examples of the (phenomenological) characteristics of conscious experience that are accessible from an internal perspective. Simple sensory sensations such as the visual quality of “scarlet” in a conscious color experience (color perception) or the olfactory quality of “musk” in an olfactory experience (sense of smell), but also bodily sensations and emotions are examples of such phenomenal properties. Because such properties have no internal structure according to experience and are not the result of a process of abstraction, they form, in a sense, the most concrete, basic building blocks of consciousness and are therefore first-order properties (order). Furthermore, according to many philosophers, they resist reductionist analysis (reductionism) because they form the intrinsic core of an experience; which cannot be conceptually reduced to relationships between elements of deeper levels of description (such as neuroscientific or functional ones). A multitude of variants of classic thought experiments attempt to show that any statement, however rich, about the physical or functional organization of a being with qualitative states  is always compatible with the assumption that the conscious experience of this being does not generate any phenomenal properties, or only radically different ones. Qualia are also difficult to grasp linguistically (one cannot explain to a person born blind what “scarlet red” means) and, as private properties, are subject to epistemic asymmetry (they are non-public properties insofar as they are only accessible to the experiencing subject itself). A number of authors therefore dispute the existence of qualia altogether. Emergentism, mind-body problem, neurophilosophy, perspectivity.

Qualia [Einzahl Quale; von latein. qualis = wie beschaffen], subjektiv und unabhängig von dem zugehörigen Objekt wahrgenommene Eigenschaften; phänomenale Eigenschaften erster Ordnung (s.u.). In der Philosophie des Geistes bilden Qualia die klassischen Beispiele für die aus der Innenperspektive zugänglichen (phänomenologischen) Merkmale des bewußten Erlebens. Einfache sensorische Empfindungen wie die visuelle Qualität von "Scharlachrot" in einem bewußten Farberlebnis (Farbwahrnehmung) oder die olfaktorische Qualität von "Moschus" in einem Geruchserlebnis (Geruchssinn), aber auch Körperempfindungen und Emotionen sind Beispiele für solche phänomenalen Eigenschaften. Außerdem widersetzen sie sich nach Auffassung vieler Philosophen einer reduktionistischen Analyse (Reduktionismus), weil sie den intrinsischenKern eines Erlebnisses bilden; dieser läßt sich begrifflich nicht auf Beziehungen zwischen Elementen tieferliegender Beschreibungsebenen (etwa neurowissenschaftlicher oder funktionaler Art) zurückführen. .....

Qualia

JARV’s lifelong love affair with music has deep roots, sprouting in the ‘70s influenced by six older siblings always spinning tunes.  Festivals have been a crucial part of his fabric since his first taste at Sweetwaters ‘83.  JARV’s sets reflect his broad musical palette, recreating his journey from  the reggae-infused snow and surf of Whanganui via the psychedelic experience of cave living in India and the melting pot that was the exploding dance culture of early ‘90s London. Now based in Tāmaki Makaurau, JARV's experimentation across music’s multiple genres continues to evolve. He knows how to party and how to bring the party.
