Hear hydrothermal water as it pours out of the earth from miles below. Listen as it cascades down a green-yellow algae-covered slick, jagged cliff, into a waterfall-fed soaking pool then out to the river 100 feet below.

My fascination with recording the sound of wind chimes began in March 2014. I was ambling through an old Episcopal cemetery in St. Francisville, Louisiana weaving between pockmarked tombstones dating back to the Civil War. Spanish moss-covered limbs from sprawling live oaks form a protective blanket over the graves. I heard the faint high-pitched sound of a wind chime whispering in the distance. The closer I got, the more it sang out to me. It was a little silver lichen-covered chime, dangling from a rusty hanger, clinking over the tiny grave of 2-year-old Marshall Wayne Brewer. Engraved on his tombstone are the words 'Our little angel.' I sat there transfixed by the sound for probably a half-hour. I just had to record it.

Wind Chimes Over 2 Year Olds Grave St. Francisville, Louisiana

Cover your ears. It’s going to get LOUD, introducing, Oval Track Racing. This high-octane stock car racing library features cars of various makes, models and performance characteristics in nine divisions circling a quarter mile (.40 kilometer) oval track in Idaho. This track distance is referred to as a ‘short track.’ The sounds were captured from multiple perspectives inside, outside, and alongside the asphalt track with a variety of microphones and recorders. Some cars sound like a sleuth of growling Grizzly bears roaring past. Others, like a swarm of angry bees, let loose all at once. Backfires sound like giant popcorn on the stove. There are shrieking skids and stunning spinouts, plus fender scrapes, tire screeches and high-pitched whines that come from engines meticulously cared for in the pits. There are even onboard recordings that feature the sound of a Street Stock car (1975 Chevrolet Nova), both in the pits and on the track.

Congregants from 21 Lake Providence, Louisiana area Baptist churches gathered under the hot and humid early-morning August skies of Lake Providence in 2015 to be baptized, the culmination of an annual retreat of prayer and fellowship. Dressed in white from head to toe, children and adults gingerly walked down the slick and muddy bank, past poison ivy and bald cypress tree knees, and into awaiting arms of preachers that shouted out Jesus’ name before having their heads dunked in murky dark roast coffee-colored water.

This is an excerpt - just one preacher in this clip - from the 42-minute baptism.

I've attended the event as a photojournalist several times, and every time I go away feeling better than I did on the long and boring drive up to this financially-strapped town with an oxbow lake in the Mississippi Delta.

Lake Providence Baptism 3rd Report 2015

Braving the wind chill so you don’t have to, listen to the unique sounds made by walking up seven flights of wood and steel re-enforced steps to the top (or as high as one is allowed to go) of the red fire tower at Mohican State Forest in north central Ohio. 

A cautionary sign at the tower base stipulates that no more than six individuals may climb the approximate 80-foot high structure at any one time. Not a problem on a frigid 22-degree Fahrenheit January morning, but well worth the effort; revealing a commanding treetop view stretching to the horizon.

The pair of high quality contact microphones used here bring out complex, haunting, reverberant sounds otherwise unheard to the naked ear. I love that this type of microphone - the kind used to record pianos, harps, etc. - can either give the listener something totally fresh and unexpected, or nothing of interest at all. Recording medal more times that not however yields fascinating results.

This is an mp3 excerpt from a longer 96k/24 bit stereo wav file, which includes over 20-minutes of ambient wind, antenna and otherworldly ghost-like noise heard through the steel. 

Use headphones or high-quality speakers for best effect.

I attended the 2019 Warbird Roundup airshow in Nampa, Idaho recently to record the sound the take off and fly by sounds of various World War II fighter and reconnaissance airplanes. 

This is a very condensed version of what I heard, including the sounds of: biplanes used as flight trainers, T-6 Texans, a B-25 Mitchell bomber,Curtis P-40's, a Curtis P-47 Thunderbolt, Cessna L-19 Bird Dog, Grumman F7F Tigercat and P-51 Mustangs.
