The Break (a Discobody disco delirium)

Denis Lepage & Joe La Greca of Lime were behind the Canadian disco group Kat Mandu. “The Break”, one of the heaviest disco instrumentals ever, was their first release in 1979 and it proved so popular it kept on being played well into the 1980's as it is the absolute irresistible floorfiller. Originally mixed by Steve Thompson & Michael Arato and issued in the US on T.K. Disco Records it climbed up the US disco charts peaking at #3. All NYC nightclubs were pumping to its insane spacy rhythm and the great Ron Hardy casted it as a favourite.

This track has all the glorious characteristics of disco music: handclaps, percussion, cowbells, lasers and whistles perfectly blended to create a frantic dancing euphoria. It is definitely a wild high~energy precursor, at the same time it is a furious tribal~house stormer! 

On this edit I go for a dubby percussive version. So I cut off some parts that sound dated and some rather cheesy melodies, recreate the breaks and add drumbeats, lasers, female sighs and more cowbells!

While Robosonic's extraordinary OFF debut  „Worst Love“ was paying homage to a specific underground rap record by the Dilated Peoples (actually without sampling the record itself), the follow-up now takes it way over the edge: consciously, of sound mind.   Since their early vinyl bootlegs (2005) under various aliases and their critically acclaimed first album as Robosonic (2007), Cord and Sacha incorporate a certain sense of irony into their undisputed world class production work. For their next episode on OFF, the boys cut slices of hiphop sample history and flipped them into seriously soulful house music joints.   Functional arrangements with plenty of musical references to golden eras and past times create the emotional depth of Robosonic’s modern „hi-tech soul“.
„OVER“ with its intimate feel seems less obvious than the famous hookline of „THE EDGE“. In fact Dr. Dre was not the first beatmaker to cook it up, so Robosonic probably aren‘t the last either. They just do what they like doing best. Funnily enough our praised creators anticipate critics and let Talib do the talking:  „These cats ain‘t real.“

The original, remixed by the likes of Eric Morillo and Harry "Choo Choo" Romero, sold over 30,000 copies back in the day and even made it into the UK pop charts. We love this track and have been playing our own vinyl copy so much that it's all scratched and warped now. :) Very excited to share our rework with you!

YOO we made a remix for Kerri Chandler, one of the most influential and prolific artists of soulful and deep dance music. We tried to keep the spirit of the original track from 1996, while using instruments from back in the day (Roland JX-1, drum computers) and adding our own touch. The remix is coming out on King Street Sounds on 20th May, the infamous house label from NYC we bought records from when we were 16. Hallelujah!

"Kerri 'Kaoz' Chandler one of deep house music's originators, has been injecting soul into music since the early nineties. An ambassador of the natural and instinctive 4/4 beat, Kerri's influences can be traced back to New Jersey growing up in a family of jazz musicians. His father being a respected deejay, provided Kerri with a rich background in the origins of soul, disco and the New York Underground Sound (known also as "Garage" music). Accompanying his father to the gigs, Kerri began playing records at the Rally Record Club in East Orange, New Jersey at the tender age of thirteen. Exposed to such musical creativity, it wasn't long before Kerri found himself interested in production. 

Since the signing of his first single "SuperLover/Get It Off" by Atlantic in 1991, Kerri began producing a prolific body of work that has helped coin him one of the most respected house producers in the world. This has been achieved by remaining true to his style. When listening to tracks such as the "Atmosphere EP" on Shelter Records and the seminal, "A Basement, Redlight and A Feeling" album on Madhouse, one has to marvel at Kerri's ability to not compromise his unique sound for commercial gain. A spiritual man, Kerri prays before making a record. Each project is an attempt to inject his free spirit into a groove. In the expanses of his breaks the odd counter rhythm will inexplicably appear for a second and then disappear, creating fleshy excitement, not mechanical repetition. His now legendary bass-lines go from heavy and heady to playful and quirky while remaining deliriously intoxicating. His fusions, clamped to the beat of his unique thundering kick drum, redefine house music at every turn. His hooks are loving details, paying attention to horn hits, washes of synthesizers, and catchy choruses creating songs with brutal drive. A believer in peace and harmony, Kerri blames soulful house's positive vibes for its failure to make it commercially, as its openness to influences are difficult for many to accept.
