“‘Saints’ was supposed to be a song with vocals – a big New York 1984 almost freestyle type song. Originally it was just drums, bassline, and synths;
it kind of reminded me of something you would’ve heard at Danceteria in ’84 -’85,  pre house music. But I was never able to write good vocals for it. By the end, I kept adding more strings, more orchestral elements, more drums, so I ended up with an instrumental that was so filled, there just wasn’t room for real vocals on it.
I like music with vocals, but having an instrumental on a record provides a moment where the listener doesn’t have to be as engaged, so you can kind of take a little break; the parts of your brain that are engaged by people singing can quiet down for a minute and you can just relax. 

Spike said ‘Saints” reminded him of ‘Slave to the Rhythm’ and ‘Unfinished Sympathy’: when he told me that, I listened to them, and was like, ‘Oh, yeah – you’re right!’ It wasn’t intentional, and I wasn’t aware of it when I was working on it, but afterwards I was like, “Yeah, I hear it.” If you listen to records enough, eventually they are going to infect how you make your own music. The fact that “Unfinished Sympathy” is one of my favorite songs of all time, and “Slave to the Rhythm” is such an inspirational piece of music, it’s not surprising that some of those elements would come through in what I do.”

After Silenzio and Robotique de l’Amour- in french, Vampiros Discos is Theremynt’s third Ep- an electronic journey in Portuguese-tribute to  Horror Brazilian Filmmaker  Ze do Caixao and all the vampires movies that have accompanied us as teenagers such as Dracula and the Likes. Somewhere between dirty house, krautrock and deviant techno, it is an uplifting track made for the dancefloor . The three remixes are following the track’s original path pushing it to its edges: Andrew Claristidge from Acid Washed has given an interesting version both deviant and cinematographic, the Club Bizarre duet is offering a more techno version  with obsessive bells while legendary techno producer David Carretta is immerging us into a new beat and rather technoish hypnotic tune. The result is a perfect DJ tool -worth trying on the dance floor in the middle of the night.

In memory of the great J dilla, we're delighted to bring you a beat tape dedicated to the man, his music and the influence he's had on so many to this day.

The beat makers were set the task of taking a sample, once flipped by Jay Dee, and making their own track, adding their own style and energy's in tribute to the man.

Having tapped Guy Andrews for our 28th Truancy Volume in 2011 on the brink of his first Hemlock release, we've been following his career closely and excitedly. This looks to begin a new chapter with the release of his debut album Our Spaces, which shows his maturity as a producer. Produced over a period of two years during a time of reinvention, the album sees Andrews refocusing his style and his approach to production while also taking in influence from break-beat and industrial, to softer touches of electronica. The album finds a home on Fabric's Houndstooth, whose recent releases from Snow Ghosts and Throwing Snow help set the tone for the sort of compositions and experimentation the album deals with. We were kindly asked to pick one of the tracks for an online premiere and having caught the private live album show at Fabric back in November, it was 'Spirit Ritual' that we felt captured the emotional and personal embodiment that Andrews talks about below, the most.

“The new album really encapsulates all my influences and production experiments, and fuses them together. I wrote the album without a label in mind, and when it was done Houndstooth just seemed like the absolute perfect fit. They’ve really helped me complete the aesthetic and put out a record I’m truly proud of. It’s different to what I’ve put out before, but I’m more confident that this work embodies much more emotion and personality than I’ve ever previously been able to express in my music.”

Wah Wah 45s are proud to welcome a brand new voice to our fold. Lea Lea - a most powerful vocalist and lyricist, with a fierce and challenging style. Already getting rave reviews for her explosive live show, she was recently selected as an “Artist to Watch” by BBC Introducing, and in her short career has already managed to write songs for artists at DefJam, RCA, BBE records and Tru Thoughts, as well as performing on line-ups that have included Jay-Z, Beyonce, Roots Manuva and Little Dragon.

Her uncompromising, sassy style has drawn comparisons to Missy Elliot, MIA, Kelis and Grace Jones, but Lea Lea’s is really a one-off – at once alluring, charming and commanding. Writing songs that encourage dialogue and challenge female stereotypes, whilst being thoroughly entertaining, Lea Lea thrives on the darker side of music yet delivers her songs with an infectious warmth.

Her first single for Wah Wah 45s is a song about judgment and condemnation from those who only see life as either "Black or White". It’s defiant and daring, made more so by bold brass that interplays with Lea Lea’s vocals, underpinned by uncompromising trademark beats.

Remixes to come courtesy of Japanese dupstep don Goth-Trad, Hospital Records beat technician Other Echoes and bass worrying French producer DJ iZem, making this a somewhat formidable package!

Her upcoming album is the result of her collaboration with producer/drummer Jack Baker (Bonobo/Alice Russell/TM Juke & The Jack Baker Trio). The pair started off making classic U.S.-inspired soul, which progressively warped into a darker, cinematic sound, besieged with powerful vocals 
and complex yet sparse production.

“I had this idea to make a video for ‘A Case For Shame’ which actually ended up informing the entire visual scheme of Innocents. In the video, someone dies – maybe they killed themselves out of a sense of shame – and they enter this other world, populated by these ghost creatures wearing masks. They look scary, but they’re actually covering their face because they’re ashamed. When you see someone wearing a scary mask, the first thought is, “What’s going on? That’s intimidating.” But they’re actually hiding – it’s the most blatant act of concealing oneself. ‘A Case For Shame” is one of two songs I collaborated on with Cold Specks. She’s quite shy, and preferred to be left alone in the studio, so I’d hit ‘record,’ go have some tea, then come back in and press ‘stop.’”
