Ma Haiping welcomes Chang'e-4, a seven-track EP. His latest project draws inspiration from the Chinese Lunar Exploration Program.

Ma Haiping is a Chinese techno producer and DJ. He began to listen to electronic music on the radio in the 90s. Around 2000, when he was 19, he began to make industrial and experimental music. A few years later, he was triggered by stories of Underground Resistance and Drexciya then started making techno and is influenced by Jeff Mills' futuristic sci-fi aesthetics.

In 2013, he released EP 'The Chinese Connection' on the Scan 7 label Cratesavers International, which made him the first Chinese producer releases techno music in Detroit. He released EP 'Crepuscular Rays' on Orlando Voorn’s label Nightvision (2015). The following year and in 2020, Ma released two albums, Folding Traces(D- Force Records) and Lost Frontier（Taihe Records).

He participated in every important moment of the Chinese underground club since 2000 and grew up with China's electronic music culture. Since 2004, he's been participating in legendary parties Antidote and VOID, and opened the curtain of the Chinese underground techno party culture. Once performed with Juan Atkins, Robert Hood and others, and worked hard to promote the development of Chinese local techno with his music.

Producer and DJ from Bizkaia, totally self-taught, a master in the shadows, he turns out to be one of the best kept secrets in the Basque geography. Always elusive throughout more than 20 years of career, it shines for its singular sound and indisputable quality, its elegance and its undeniable audible speech. For the occasion he exclusively presents a live set baptized by himself as “Ragnarok”, which translates into 45 minutes of fascinating electronic journey where the nuances, atmospheres, rhythms and melodies go beyond labels such as techno, minimal , ambient, experimentation, industrial, contemporary or drone building a story of unquestionable beauty and irrefutable honesty.

With his debut release on Higher Resonance, Sacha Ketterlin creates a new level where Ambient and Techno meet on a par, merging into an epic sound symphony, far away from stomping tool techno. The result of his sound exploration on the modular system offers four tracks with a clear and minimalistic structure driven by floating pads and powerful basses. Every track enchants the listener by dreamy and remote voices which get lost in a cosmic nebula. A universe of sound.

Spheric sounds by the modular system offer a cosmic expanse in which a heartbeat emerges. The interplay of these two elements invite the listener to dream and dance. At this point the journey continues with rolling basses and punctual sub-basses giving a solid foundation to the second track. A playful melodic synth-line comes up with short decay on an continually morphing pad supported by subtil and epic voices that get lost in a wide space. Driven by 16th hi-hats and a snappy kick by the modular system, Odyssey leads to an explosion of the senses. A dance of forces. The B-side starts with the emphasis on a playful and pushing energy initiated by a synth that dances like an alarm through the stereo image. An interplay of bright filter-ping sounds and a deep chord accentuated by a rumbling profound sub-bass and a powerful bass drum. The last track invites to find peacefulness with soft glittering sounds, groovy 909-drums and dreamy vocals. Grounded by a deep sub-bass and a chorus bass with a wide stereo image Starlight rounds off the journey over the cosmic ocean of sound.

In the age of neoliberal capitalism when every aspect of our existence needs to have a rational function, purpose and value, music starts to be seen as a tool or mere application for our everyday routines. There is music for better working efficiency, music to calm you down after the exhausting job, music to take drugs and dance to, music for meditation and so-called spiritual growth etc.

“Optimism” is an attempt to confront that paradigm and liberate the music from the dictatorship of current consumption models and strict functionality. This is reached by adopting and deconstructing the elements of modern electronic music and focusing on what lies beneath them: sparse polymetric beats instead of dance grooves, textures instead of timbres, mutating and morphing loops instead of melodic lines, rhizomatic structures instead of linear compositions.

The result is an emotionally diverse musical journey that constantly shifts away from listener’s expectations while still striving to grab the attention. Free for interpretations, “Optimism” raises the question if there is a chance to escape the utilitarianism these days?
