The album covers many styles of Contemporary Jazz music crossing from R&B and Soul to Funk and Hip Hop even Reggae and Latin grooves which all make up the foundation of the recording.

The album features some of Rick's dear friends from near and a far as guest artist through out the album. NEA Jazz Master and jazz icon drummer Roy Haynes seems to wrote the book on the fountain of youth. He just recently turned 85 last week and played a week of sold-out dates at the Blue Note Jazz Club featuring guest performances from pianist Chick Corea, trumpeter Roy Hargrove, and bassist Christian McBride. Coming up next on a special edition of The Pace Report, Roy Haynes talks about his life and what keep him playing after 60 years in the business.


Welcome back to The Pace Report, I’m Brian Pace. Last week drummer Roy Haynes was roasted by comedian and dear friend Bill Cosby as the NEA Jazz Master and jazz icon celebrated his birthday before friends, family, and music fans at the Blue Note Jazz Club in New York City. Haynes, who played with greats like Thelonious Monk, Sarah Vaughan, Charlie Parker and Stan Getz, sat down with me after his first set. He talked to me what keeps him going and his take on life.


Roy Owen Haynes was born on March 13th, 1925 in Roxbury, Massachusetts. He taught himself to play the drums at an early age. His idols at the “kit’ were Jo Jones, Sid Catlett and Chick Webb. His older brother Doug played the trumpet. While Doug studied at the New England Conservatory, he introduced Roy to his hero Jo Jones. “My brother was the one who kept inspiring me to pursue music and to play the drums. Meeting Jo was like a dream come true! Watching him play was the real reason I had to play the drums.” Although he played in school, he ventured off to the clubs in Boston and began playing professionally at 17 with guitarist Tom Brown. This was around the early to mid-1940’s when the big bands ruled the dance halls and radio. In 1945 he joined bandleader’s Luis Russell band. It was also the time he moved to Harlem, New York and endured the heavy music mecca that it had become. At the end of 1947 Haynes left Russell and joined saxophonist Lester Young’s band. His first major breakout was when he joined and played with the legendary Charlie Parker. In fact, he played on opening night of Birdland with Parker in which Hayes was the master of ceremonies of the 60th Anniversary last December. From Parker, he later became a well seasoned and in-demand drummer backing Miles Davis, Bud Powell, John Coltrane, Lennie Tristano, Kenny Burrell, Stan Getz, and Sarah Vaughan.


Most drummers were and are considered “time-keepers,” but Haynes was in a different league. His style was also ideal and most comfortable backing vocalists like Sarah Vaughan and Lambert, Hendricks & Ross.


Throughout his career he’s been honored and received many awards like the Living National Treasures of Jazz from the Museum of American History; an honorary Doctor of Music degree from Berklee College of Music; induction into the International Academy of Jazz Hall of Fame (University of Pittsburgh); the French Chevalier des l'Ordres Artes et des Lettres; endless Down Beat polls; and his 1995 induction to the National Endowment of the Arts Jazz Masters class.


At 85, Haynes and his Fountain of Youth Band are one of most requested and booked units at jazz festivals all over the world. Members like saxophonist Jaleel Shaw, bassist David Wong and pianist Martin Bejerano have enhanced his playing and continue to keep the legend in tact. His performance on Wednesday night featured Grammy-Award winning trumpeter Roy Hargrove. Both Shaw and Hargrove were on point. Their solos and musicianship blended perfectly and was the icing of the entire birthday celebration.


Congratulations Roy on your many accomplishments and giving the world your talents and presence. Roy, continue to live life to the fullest and keep that undying loving spirit that many have continued to respect and admire about you throughout the years. Rick Britto is a well known jazz musician from the New England area. 

Britto's latest recording projects include: "For Your Love", "Conversations with Erik & I", Trine: " +1" and "In The Sky" all released on the new TrineArc Music label in the last two years from 2009-2011. 

Previous releases on other labels include: The Lord's Orphans: "Holy City", Trine: "Politics", Andy McWain Ensemble: "Resemblance" ," One O'clock Jump Live".
 
As a musician, Rick Britto has performed with many artists and groups both nationally and locally including Karl Berger, Santi Debriano, Harold Jones, Freddie Redd, Kate McGarry, One O'clock Jump, Royal Hartigan, Wes Brown, Armsted Christian, Jim Robitaille, Semenya McCord, Marcelle Gauvin, John Harrison, Chris Poudrier, Bruce Gertz, Dave Zinno, Herb King, Kenny Wensel, Lou Columbo, Frank Wilkins, Alon Yavnai and numerous other musicians.
 
He has been double billed with such jazz notables as Ray Brown, Monty Alexander, Rosemary Clooney, Dick Johnson, Dave McKenna, The Artie Shaw Band, The Buddy Rich Band, and Count Basie's Orchestra.

In the world of popular music, Britto has performed with many R&B recording acts from The Drifters and The Tuneweavers to Tavares and even Queen Latifa to name a few.

Rick Britto is also a well known jazz educator from the New England area. A graduate of Berklee College of Music, he is a faculty member at both the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and Wheaton College instructing private lessons for saxophone and jazz piano, directing music ensembles and teaching Jazz Theory and African-American Music History.
 
He has also taught younger students locally by assisting band directors for both New Bedford and Old Rochester Regional High School Bands for years and currently teaches a few gifted younger students privately in his home. Rick has also adjudicated many concerts, clinics and competitions in school districts in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut.

Rick Britto also owns a recording studio, Saurus Studio, where he has produced numerous projects for radio & television and engineered, recorded or mastered recordings for many artists locally.
 
 Latest projects include CD mastering for "Union", Cheryl Conte: "Fortress", "O Caboverdiano" and “Boa Vista” by Cape Verdean guitarist and cavaquinho player, Tazinho, Andy McWain Ensemble: "Resemblance", Trine: "Politics", Trine: " +1", Rick Britto - Matt Richard: "In The Sky", Conversations with Erik & I" and his latest recoding project, a Smooth Jazz CD entitled, "For Your Love".

In the publishing world, Britto digitally restored and mastered old recordings for "The Music of South India" published by Prof. Matthew Allen of Wheaton College for Oxford University Press and scored music for "Jazz Consciousness Music, Race, and Humanity" by Prof. Paul Austerlitz for Wesleyan University Press.

Rick Britto is also a professional web designer and web master for several artists and musician's websites including musical artists: Harold Jones, Semenya McCord, Marcelle Gauvin, Jack Gomes, The Dancing Dogs and Cobach Musik plus, psychic medium, Gail Hicks, Cape Verdean artist/photographer, Ron Barboza and political candidate for Ward 1 in New Bedford, Randy Santos.

His newest venture is into the world of visual art! He debuted his first piece of digital art work, "Mind, Body & Soul" a digital self-portrait, at Gallery X in downtown New Bedford as part of the Public Hanging Art Exhibit in August of 2010.
