Echoes of Power [Updated]

The songs ‘Returning’ and ‘The Cradle’ are from George Winston’s Grammy award winning album ‘Forest’ released in 1994.  Returning has been transposed to the key of G minor as George frequently played this song as the introduction to The Cradle which is also in the key of G minor.

‘Returning’ was written by George Winston and ‘The Cradle’ is George’s arrangement of a song originally written and recorded by jazz organist Larry Young (Khalid Yasim) as a duet for organ and drums on his 1968 album Heaven on Earth.  The song is dedicated to moms everywhere.

I recorded songs on my Nord Stage 2 voicing Spectrasonics Keyscape using a custom patch based on a modified 7’ 6” Yamaha C7 Grand Piano.  This piano was fitted with Renner “Blue Point” hammers with Welckert felt - a special piano hammer felt used during the pre-Cold War “golden age of Steinway”.

One of the things I like to do with composing is write a lot of music, as quickly as I can. Then, let it linger and simmer and see which melodies stay with me the longest. The ones I can't get out of my head are usually the ones I try to flesh out in the months ahead.

The seeds of this piece started in August 2024. The tune lingered with me, but something about the arrangement felt hallow.

When I revisited it this summer, I changed the key (down to D from E major), which opened up some new warmth it seemed to need. A second voice emerged just below the melody, almost on its own, adding some movement and slight unrest it needed.

The piece itself asks me to slow down, to let my hands sink into each note in order to play it properly. Its title is inspired by Mary Oliver’s poem "When I Am Among the Trees". A reminder that slowing down reveals depths we might otherwise miss, that are right in front of us.

I hope you find a little stillness in it, too.
