Fire Draw Near Episode XXII

The 11th single on the Riddim Chango imprint features a dub poet from Kingston, Nazamba. He dropped a debut single on The Bug's Pressure label which followed by a full album on Dubquake Records. (Run by Europe's leading soundsystem crew, O.B.F) The riddim is made by Element who is a co-founder of Riddim Chango records.
On the A-side, Nazamba's earth-shattering and vexed poetry tells a true story of black oppression and the minimal tech-stepper riddim accelerates the power of the dub-poet. On the flip side, “Xpander” is instrumental stepper track influenced by 90s UK militant digital dub. It is built with layered Oberheim's classic synth sounds and solid drums and bass. Low-end focused part2 has lesser elements with greater energy in a classic dubwise manner.
The 3 tracks on the 12” have been soundsystem approved for promised bass weight and balance.

For the next installment on the Soil and Sound series, the heavyweight dub-crafter @b_say provides two crushingly heavy cuts in two different styles of dub music!

A - Labyrinth Dub
This dark and stomping 130 track fuses the minimal rhythmic characteristics of classic dubstep, but with the application of a slower, more menacing pace; B-Say is able to produce a feeling that invokes the feeling of being hit with a thousand bass-fuelled punches!

B - Unity Dub
Coming through with a thunderous sound here, B-Say switches up the style and crafts a deep dub-steppa style track with such a perfect set of grooves, through the use of organs and sounds of all things UK dub! This cut scratches that deep, meditative dub itch we all have within us! ;)

As per, this release will be a limited run of 30 copies, hand-cut by the dubplate master Henry Bainbridge at @Dubstudio, onto 10" transparent plates!

SASDUB07: B-Say - Labyrinth Dub / Unity Dub 10" (clips)

Known for their head-bopping, hip-thrusting, zalghouta-inducing tunes, Restless Leg Syndrome seamlessly fuse Western and Middle Eastern references in their work. Their tastefully-crafted mélange strikes a nerve, with a trace of nostalgia for an ever-growing diaspora and a hint of excitement to the unfamiliar ear. The Vienna-based group is comprised of longtime DJ and producer d.b.h and turntable maestros Chrisfader and Testa. A seasoned enthusiast of Lebanese music, d.b.h provided the influence for their critically acclaimed second EP “Dabkeh”. The EP paid tribute to the iconic Mediterranean form of line-dancing, by flipping samples of Lebanese music into irresistibly groovy beats.

The group began working loosely on their upcoming project over a year and a half ago. The onslaught of the pandemic shot prospects for gigs short and the guys found themselves in the studio five days a week. With busy schedules cleared up, RLS locked down and started focusing full-throttle on the music. Since the release of “Dabkeh”, the guys have toured the region and dug up an expansive library of records. Their newest body of work samples gems from Egypt, Jordan, Algeria, Morocco, Irak and Lebanon, really highlighting a natural development and maturity through its subtlety and diversity of its references.

Restless Leg Syndrome will release a compilation of four EPs in the next few months, with the result truly a community effort. Artworks for the tracks are in collaboration with Lebanese talents Ashekman, a graffiti veteran, and illustrator Raphaelle Macaron. The trio stumbled across 80’s Lebanese electro-pop star Emaad Sayyah living in Austria and proceeded to work together in his studio as well as sampling his previous work.

Restless Leg Syndrome fittingly premiered the season with an original mix titled “Way to Eskandaria”. All Bandcamp proceeds from the track, featured in Diggers’ Delight Records ‘Beirut Bounce Compilation’, go to relief and rebuilding efforts in Beirut. In October, the trio dropped their free edit release of Abdel Halim Hafez’s “Khayef Marra Aheb” and paid tribute to one of Egypt and the Arab worlds’ most popular singers.

Their first EP “Venom” cinematically takes off with classical Arabic melodies and distinct sounds coupled with RLS’s signature electronic bounce. The latter half of the EP introduces a fat bass and a tasteful sample selection coupled with crisp synth sounds highlighting the trios’ affinity for Hip Hop.

Restless Leg Syndrome is dropping the first of four digital EPs in the beginning of the year followed by a release every couple of weeks and ending with an exclusive double-vinyl release.

The second EP "Falcon" will be released in February 2021.
