Ben Lukas Boysen expands on 2020’s album Mirage with his brand new follow-up EP Clarion featuring a rare Kiasmos remix.

Containing two brand new tracks from the Berlin-based electronic composer and producer, plus three very special remixes ranging as wide as from Hyperdub producer Foodman to Scottish post rock legends Mogwai, Clarion picks up where Mirage left off. The first single arrives in the shape of a rare Kiasmos remix of the title track, crafted by the Icelandic techno duo and Erased Tapes label mates Janus Rasmussen and Ólafur Arnalds.

“Hearing how Kiasmos tamed the somewhat rough nature of Clarion and elevated it to a focussed and highly energised dream-like state made my day when I first heard the remix.
The floating and driving rhythm of this version distils the original into a luxurious percussive meditation,” Boysen says.

About the making of, Janus Rasmussen explains: “Sometimes remixes can be a joy to work on, especially when the original material is as strong as this one. Immediately after hearing the stems, the idea of the remix was so apparent. It was almost as if the song had already existed in this remixed form. The main melody is so catchy yet intriguing that it's a perfect fit for a Kiasmos remix.”

The new material on this 6-track EP expands on themes of Ben’s 2020 album.

“Mirage was about the diffusion and change of weight of elements within a piece as well as giving the instrumentalists featured, such as cellist Anne Müller, a different function and meaning. Lux and Plexus revisit this mindset, diving into granular, resyncing patterns and harmonic studies,” he adds.

Clarion will be released both digitally and in a limited 12” vinyl edition on March 18.

Cementing himself as an integral part of the French Indie music scene, French producer and multi-instrumentalist Crayon, real name Lauren Larue, signed to Erased Tapes in 2021 to herald in a new chapter in his life.

His two track EP, consisting of Misplaced and Ithinkso, sees him going back to his electronic, UK-infused roots. Whilst the opening song Misplaced — featuring vocals from Gracy Hopkins and Jo Lowenthal of Australian indie band Tora — maintains a clearer narrative; the second is a blend of traditional 00’s uk garage and jazz, almost fully instrumental. It’s this clear contrast the producer wanted to explore further, made possible by spending a month away in Morocco with choreographer Leo Walk and a bunch of other creatives and friends in early 2020. While Misplaced had already been recorded several months before, Ithinkso was sitting comfortably amongst a raft of other unfinished songs in Crayon’s hard drive. “It was only after seeing Leo’s excitement at first listen, and the incredible and abstract dance moves he would throw while discovering the song that I knew I had to do something with it,” the artist recalls.

As he and Leo went to spend a week at Plastician’s mystical domain Jean Francois Fourtou, in the outskirts of Marrakech, they found themselves submerged in a parallel world, surrounded by giant sculptures of insects, and a fully equipped, real sized reversed house. One quiet night they decided to experiment together with Leo repeating specific moves, almost turning himself into a human boomerang, while Crayon’s assignment was to write an assimile yet efficient electronic beat to it. After sampling a very short bit from French Soul singer Enchantée Julia (who Crayon was producing for at the time), Ithinkso was born, named after what they would both hear phonetically from the sample.

Both tracks wouldn’t have been completed without yet another collaborator, Crayon’s then roommate Bastien Brison, a Paris based jazz pianist. Together they held, when Lauren returned from the trip, what they simply called The Jazz Club in their apartment. It was a weekly jam/live painting/dancing event that they opened to a (not so) small lucky audience as a way to cope with the absence of live music, and events in general. Once again, the clear contrast between traditional jazz music and modern sounds and movements, that gave him the urge to make this project.

Many times people have told me how much they just can't stand reggaeton. That omnipresent style build on the golden dem-bow rhythm that has gone on to conquer the world, Bad Bunny and beyond. 

But, beyond the mainstream (which goes for any music) there is something incredible about that simple rhythm. Following on from my last EP Tón Tón I thought I would see what happened if I tried to make a mixtape of "dem-bow" music which has absolutely nothing to do with dem-bow music. 

This mix is a juxtaposition of styles and sounds m(think Aphex Twin meets Ayra Starr meets Baiuca meets Âme...some dub techno, some Moroccan gnawa, some Ana Tijoux...)but all tied together by the thread of a dem-bow rhythm.
