Ōshima Ryōta was a Japanese poet of the Edo period. Some sources say he was a disciple of Yosa Buson, while others say his master was Hattori Ransetsu. He's mostly remembered for his essay “Bashō ku kai” 芭蕉句解 ('Study of Bashō's haiku') published in 1759, a magnum opus of his studies and literary theories on Matsuo Bashō's work.

The rain field recording felt inevitable as a starting point—once in place, the chimes followed naturally. Two measures of gentle drones and a few understated piano notes later, and the piece settled into a safe haven. Nothing more felt necessary.

I came across this poem in the book "An Anthology of Haiku, Ancient and Modern" by Asataro Miyamori. The poet’s surname and the publication date are unknown; only the name Kinsha remains.
