Lena had never seen a human face.

She was born with a rare condition—one that doctors couldn’t explain. To her, people simply didn’t exist. She could see the world in perfect detail: the earth, the sky, the buildings, the trees. But where a person should be, there was only emptiness.

She had learned to live with it. She listened to voices, followed sounds, and felt the brush of unseen hands. It was lonely, but predictable. Safe.

Until the man appeared.

It started subtly. A flicker of movement where there should have been nothing. A shadow peeking from behind a streetlight, its shape just barely visible at the edge of her vision.

At first, she told herself it was nothing. A trick of her mind. But the shadow didn’t go away.

It got closer.

She began to notice him everywhere—standing just behind the corners of buildings, lurking at the edge of alleyways. Never moving, never speaking. Just watching. And each time she turned another corner, he was closer.

One day, he stood at the end of her driveway.

The next, at the foot of her stairs.

That night, she locked her bedroom door. But locks don’t keep out things that shouldn’t exist.

Lena didn’t answer her phone the next morning. No one heard from her again.

Her house sat untouched, her door still locked from the inside. The only clue was the blood.

A thick, winding trail leading from her bedroom into the woods. It stretched deep into the forest, disappearing into the shadows between the trees.

They searched for weeks. No body. No signs of struggle. Only silence.

And those who dare to walk near the forest’s edge say, sometimes, just before twilight, they feel a presence behind them. A shadow lingering at the corners of their vision.

Waiting.

Watching.

Closer.
