This track is what happens when an orchestra accepts its fate and walks into the digital void. I tried to keep it together, but by the second drop, even the reverb tails were crying. Ideally, this should be listened to while watching a sunset, or while staring at a 'Fatal System Error' screen and contemplating your life choices.

Lena Willikens is the kind of artist who’s only capable of following one path – her own. In many ways, she’s the archetypal selector, an unpredictable DJ who often eschews all notions of genre in favor of what she describes as “different temperatures, different time zones, different moods and a healthy portion of chaos.” Although her methods have certainly proven effective on the dancefloor, Willikens also refuses to be bound by its traditional limitations.

That willingness to buck convention also extends to this compilation, as the German DJ and celebrated Salon des Amateurs resident has elected to stock her contribution to the Selectors series with a surprising number of previously unreleased tracks. “I’ve been playing most of these songs for a while now,” she explains. “I benefit from my friends and colleagues who constantly send me their unreleased music. Now I want to give something back by sharing these tracks with everybody.”

Nevertheless, those looking for vintage gems won’t be disappointed, as Willikens has also included a handful of oddball favorites from her record bag. At the same time, she’s made a point to avoid notably rare and expensive tunes. “There are already enough passionate people out there doing a great job digging and reissuing,” she says. Instead, her curatorial instincts have taken her in a much more conceptual direction, which she describes as a “little trip through the dunes.” She adds, “It might be challenging to walk or dance on the sand, so perhaps it’s more comfortable to lay down and glide along without having a certain destination in mind.”

‘Driftmachine Plays Marien van Oers’ is a parallel physical output to the concert ‘Massive Trance: Interpreted by Driftmachine,’ which was performed during the 2019 Minimal Music Festival in Amsterdam. The concert performed at Muziek Gebouw aan ‘t IJ as well as the album, takes its cue from a cassette produced in 1983 by the Dutch experimental composer Marien van Oers (1955–2013). The original cassette states Van Oers’ following intentions: “The basic idea of the performance is experiencing a constant repetition of sound (=rhythm), which can result in the spectator taking action through movement or getting into a form of trance.” His percussion based pieces are all but industrial; the self-built instruments and repetitive chanting aim to achieve a physicality that is closer to tribal music. Van Oers has mainly performed as his solo act, Het Zweet, which was active from 1983 to about 1988.
This interpretation of Marien van Oers’ music by modular synth duo Driftmachine is not a blind restaging of Van Oers’ original recordings, but instead actively reinterprets the piece on the level of its composition, performance, and mixing. Taking the piece’s ultimate aim of ‘attaining trance’ as a starting point, Driftmachine accordingly works towards a new coherence that features a repetition of organic syncopations by using two racks of modular systems.
The liner notes detail how this record came to be, analyze the early work of Marien van Oers, and places this project as a curatorial practice of Ongehoord label initiator Jeroen Vermandere.
This is the fourth release of the Dutch label Ongehoord. Previous records compiled material that had solely been released on cassette during the ’80s. ‘Driftmachine Plays Marien van Oers’ is the first album in a series which departs from released and unreleased cassette material, using it as a source of inspiration.
