Back in 2011 we caught up with Martyn as he prepared to release his sophomore album Ghost People on Brainfeeder - conversing away on the obstacle of second album syndrome, his first foray into performing his music live and his early collaborations. Seven years later and an album on Ninja Tune in between, his fourth LP titled Void lands on Berlin's flagship label Ostgut Ton on the 22nd of June. Questioning everything he has done musically in the past, and everything he still wants to do, the album has been described as being written as a means of catharsis, recently being released from the hospital after some unexpected health issues. Turning to Max Roach's 1979 ensemble percussion album M’Boom, however, was the spark in reassessing the elements that drove him to make music in first place.

In his own words: "That was the first record I listened to in my studio after coming out of the hospital. It's a project where Roach works with a slew of top notch percussionists and drummers and rotates them for every composition. Playing this record was such a surreal experience, the first music I consciously listened to after my recovery. I could hear so much space in the music, something I had never noticed before; almost like a 3D experience, with the most striking aspect being the emptiness between the players."

In the space of eight months Martyn would write his fourth album, creating an almost semi-descendant of his first LP Great Lengths sound-wise, yet forging new paths forward in genre. At nine tracks, with no collaborations or vocalists, the music is described as being stripped down its essentials, as Martyn looks to recontextualize his music with elements of Nyabinghi, drum ‘n‘ bass, and gqom. His Truancy Volume, which he calls an 'inspiration mixtape' to compliment Voids, is a collection of music, new and old that he's listened to over the past year. With Digital Mystikz alongside Shed and Objekt alongside Appleblim, Martyn roams through an almost biographical tale of selections, with his love for jazz shining through with the inclusion of London jazz collective Sons Of Kemet. We also caught up with Martyn for the second time on Truants to talk about Voids, how his ideas form, playing live at Panorama Bar and how radio has become more accessible than ever.

Kicking it between Berlin, London and his hometown of Melbourne the last few years, Mic Newman, now better known for his Fantastic Man alias, has become one of the main leading stalwarts pushing punchy, tripped out house cuts out of Australia. Although now based in Berlin for the moment, a string of 2016 releases mixed with some fortunate good timing meant he was trail-blazing through releasing some of his best-received music in the short timeframe of six months. The summer sees him busier than ever, lining up gigs at Razzmataz, Panorama Bar, Festival Les Escales, Sugarfactory and some Australian dates to name a few. Catching up a month before he gets set to play his fourth Love International festival over in Tisno, Croatia, Mic kindly delivered our 217th Truancy Volume. We also threw some questions his way, discussing the last seven years of Fantastic Man, his new P.M.T.C alias, the label (Superconcious Records) he runs with Francis Inferno Orchestra, and taking mushrooms for the first time on one of his favourite teenage summer holiday. Opening with a forthcoming track from FIO called 'Hygiene', Mic excels from the start on this hour long mix, blending wistful melodies with soft tribal atmospherics for a dazzling 217th instalment.

For his Truancy Volume, Space has delivered an hour of pure Boo, featuring tracks from across the length of his career. Journey of Bu includes early, unreleased material - “there’s stuff in this mix from the vaults which even people in Chicago don’t know about”– and cuts from his new album, I’ll Tell You What!, due out on Planet Mu. Whereas Legacy and Fingers, Bank Pads & Shoe Prints were collections of archived tracks, Space’s third studio LP is comprised of all-new material. With a clean palette and encouragement from label boss Mike Paradinas, he has seized the chance to craft something more intimate, and representative of how things have changed in previous years. To that end, he’s more involved in the sound than ever before, with many tracks featuring his own synth work, such as Back to the Future’s raw, rumbling bass, or Work the Flow’s icy leads. Other cuts, like U-Don’t Know, began life as straight-forward battle tracks which took on far more subtle, evolved qualities, he says.

It's a pleasure to share the first mix contribution of this new decade which comes from the heart of California's apostle of funk, Garrett. Interview (excerpt) down below.

MFM: Hi Garrett, such a pleasure to have you on board. For the readers who've never been to Pasadena before, could you describe how it is growing up and living there as an artist?

G: It’s a suburb just north of The City of Los Angeles. A few miles from Dodgers Stadium. Home of the Rose Bowl & the Rose Parade. Living there was nice, for the most part. Slower than Los Angeles, yet..still in the same county. All backgrounds live there & also co-existed with each other in the schools & etc. The schools used to have music programs. The neighborhoods had parks. Still do. Yet, the park in my neighborhood was called Jackie Robinson Park. A lot of stories from the era I grew up in around this park, neighborhood & particular side of Pasadena aka: Northwest Pasadena. Too much for your readers, now, in this interview. 

MFM: Is it different now from back when you grew up there?

G: It’s different. My neighborhood used to be mostly Black. Last time I went back, it was mostly Latino. Downtown has now been gentrified. Small Mom & Pop stores have been replaced with big brand stores & eateries. Etc. Yet, all things change. Nothing ever stays the same.

MFM: Could you tell a bit about how you got to play instruments and where your exceptional knowledge of anything funky comes from?

G: Just taught my self keyboards & drums. No one taught me anything. It was natural. Just dived in. As for Funk; it was all over the place growing up; on the radio, my parents records, my neighbors windows, the cars driving by, boom boxes after school, etc. Hip-Hop was part of my youth as well. Just came later. Yet, I was also into other styles by artists such as RUSH, Gary Numan, KISS, Iron Maiden, Soft Cell, The Human League, early 80’s King Crimson like “Elephant Talk” & more. That was how we got down in Pasadena. We weren’t one dimensional as far a music styles. 

MFM: Apart from funk-related music, is there any other kind of music you're into, or maybe even get your inspiration from?

G: I like Detroit Techno a lot. Early Chicago House (particularly Larry Heard’s endeavors & related), Prog. Library music, Ambient, some Metal, & some Pop, such as artists like Prefab Sprout & The Blue Nile.

MFM: On your LP's synths seem to do the talking whereas lots of your other material include vocals too. Is there a specific reason for that both Garrett albums came out fully instrumental?

G: It’s a glimpse into my private life. I’m an only child. Didn’t really need to speak much. So, that mind-state flows all over both releases, in that manner.  

MFM: You're a producer and musician foremost. At what point did DJing start to play a pivotal role in your life/career?

G: Around 2006 when I started DJ’ing (weekly) at a party called Funkmosphere in Culver City, California at a small bar called Carbon. The rest is history. 

MFM: How important is DJing and touring to you? You seem to be rather selective when choosing shows, correct?

Garrett: All of my creative endeavors are important to me. I really don’t take any of them for granted. I’m not that selective. I think if anything is related to that; it may be that I just don’t wanna play myself out everywhere, every month! I’d like it to remain special when I come around, worldwide (humbly speaking).

MFM: If there's anything more you'd like to share maybe?

G: Thank you to all the listeners for your continued interest & support of my creative endeavors out here in the world. I sincerely appreciate it. I’ve matured over the years & thank you all for maturing with me. Peace to the entire MFM staff & everyone paying attention + listening.
