Der Mix ist etwas eklektischer von den Tempi und vermutlich schon spürbar dunkler und zackiger, als meine letzten Mixe. In Gedanken war ich beim Aufnehmen irgendwie schon viel bei euch auf Trakt 1 und 3 unterwegs, geplant war das allerdings nicht…
 
The mix varies a little more with the speeds and I guess it also got a bit darker and uptempo than my previous recordings. Apparently while recording the mix I’ve been more present at floor 1 and 3 in the IFZ, somehow this got out of my control.

// How would you describe your connection to Leipzig and IfZ ? 

Als eine sehr enge. In Leipzig habe ich lange gelebt und dort u.a. auch mit dem Auflegen angefangen. Generell hat mich die Stadt in meinem Zugang zu elektronischer Musik und Clubkultur deutlich geprägt. Das IFZ ist da auf jeden fall mehr als beispielhaft, jedoch nicht nur als Club-Institution - ich denke da auch an die früheren IFZ-Zeiten, als der ursprüngliche Kern damals illegale Open Airs und Partys in alten Fabriken und anderen abwegigen Orten organisiert hatte. 
 
As a very close one. I lived in Leipzig for quite some time and also started DJing there. In general the city had a very essential imprint on my approach to electronic music and club culture. The IFZ played a big role for me too, however not just as an institution as a club - I’m also thinking back to the early times when the primary collective had been realising many memorable open airs and illegal partys in old fabrics and other abandoned places.

This month, we’ve decided to focus on music from Black creators, most of which are either self-released or featured on black-owned labels to ensure the funds reach them in a direct way. Fictions #41 w/ Gigsta & CCL 09.06.2020

There's no question in the remarkable quality of the musical outputs that Melbourne has to offer. Every now and then however, something truly special comes across your musical desk. For me, one of the most exciting projects to come of 2020 is Acopia.

Acopia brings together three local Melbourne musicians @purient, @liluzu and @morganwright, commendable all in their individual endeavours, but together converge to showcase a contemporary incarnation of stripped back, emotional synth pop reminiscent of the 80s. Their debut EP 'For You I Try' is everything I love packaged in two neat little arrangements, warm yet melancholy and worthy of a tear or two. Acopia's less is more approach to music will no doubt see them flourish into their bright future. I'm counting down the days until we can see Acopia take the stage live, but for now Lachie, Kate, and Morgan joined me for a chat and one hour guest mix, broadcast live on PBS Melbourne for Passing Notes episode 81.

A multimedia artist, DJ and producer, 'nohup' isn't short of projects or aliases. Moving under numerous musical disguises (‘sighup’, DJ Kaaba Emoji, Mystery Contusion), they also head up a neat selection of side hustles inclusive of an apparel brand and a techy Twitter bot. 

Earlier this year, they launched the label Illegal Afters Tracks. The project had a flying start, raising over $1100 from their first record; split between Real Rent Duwamish and Loveland Therapy Fund. 

On their Hyp mix debut, 'nohup' meditates on the meaning of freedom. Without giving too much away, this mix is a representation of how freedom can develop true artistry with wide-ranging and thought-provoking outcomes. Tune in, it's 'nohup' on the Hyp Mix.

The club lockdown has elicited a range of reactions from DJs—with some moving toward more ambient-leaning sounds, or finding it much harder to release mixes or sets at all. Bay Area-based DJ likeholywine [@matthew-lindgren] has been one of the DJs continuing to carry the torch for a raucous, queer dancefloor from home, steadily releasing mixes that make us miss the smell of fog and sweat.

"I miss the dance floor. Like any citizen of The Club, I’ve had to shift to experiencing dance music from the comfort of my own home/rave cave; it’s definitely not the same, but it opens up new possibilities at the same time. Club music is rooted in heavy beats that get the floor moving, and while we may not be sharing the same space, we now have a unique opportunity to enjoy music with people across the world through streams and chat rooms.

My DJ mantras are “any music can be club music” and “I’m going to play whatever the hell I want,” so adapting how I play for at-home-raving has been a fun challenge. This mix is almost exclusively made up of new releases that have come out post-COVID, because I wanted it to be a pulse check on dance music and how producers are interpreting it with all that’s going on in 2020. I turned the lights down in my studio, turned the sound up way too loud, and transported myself to a booth playing to a dance floor that’s sweaty, packed, and ecstatic."

K: Who exactly is executive lunch?

EL: Executive lunch is an afternoon special at Cafe Brasil in Culver City, a gentleman’s short-lived escape from atomization, a creature birthed in São Paulo and raised in the desert.

EL: This is your second pipipi mix. What has changed since your first?

K: Well first of all I guess I live in California now. Very grateful to you for luring me out to the crazy weirdness of Los Angeles. It’s been a strange year to move to a new city, but I feel at home having you as my rock and the handful of friends that have woven in and around our lives these past 12 months. Musically this one feels so different than my last pipipi - every song has some story or place associated with it that we shared together. Also, there’s a certain playfulness that you brought out in me which doesn’t come out as much solo.

K: If you could live inside of a fruit, which would it be and why?

EL: I would live inside of a pomegranate, for the texture

EL: What was your best interaction with a more-than-human life form this year?

K: When a black & white cat appeared at my back porch in LA and left a dead mouse on the door. We tried to leave water or food but he didn’t really stick around for it. Still not sure if he wanted anything in return or if he was just feeling particularly generous that night.

K: Take your favorite song from our mix, and describe the feeling you had when you first heard it

EL: I don’t know if it was the very first time I heard it, but the track with the most potent memory is no vale Na by Chico Blanco. Early in the lockdown, vibing down PCH with dear friends Sam & Chase en route to Topanga, where we all snuck into a park to watch the meteor shower from the wet grass
