It will be tough to find a pair capable of generating as much energy as CTW founder Mimi and Warning resident Marie Montexier. First one delivered a strong mix infused with some Big Beat, Newbeat or even Liquid d&b. It sails quite a bit and it's anything but nasty!
Second one has been focused on a set that progressively rises in intensity with techno sounds that are close to acid, breakbeat and progressive.

As part of RA2122, our ongoing celebration of 21 years of club culture, we'll be featuring some of our favourite DJs from around the world, highlighting the parties or clubs most important to their lives in dance music. DJ Voices will be playing our RA2122 party in New York this Saturday, November 29th.

DJ Voices is a prime example of an artist that really can do it all. The New York-based artist, originally from Florida, has been an integral part of New York's electronic music as a DJ and as a booker at one of the city's best venues, Nowadays. Voices got her footing as a selector as a founding member of the DJ collective Working Women, but these days she performs solo through her Nowadays residency and her radio show on The Lot, Nothing In Moderation. Her sets are known for their psychedelic dynamism—her selection, with which she prioritizes "energy and drama over genre," often flits from rolling low-end music, uptempo tracks (that she then slows all the way down) and wonky leftfield beats. 

"It would be hard to overstate how much Nowadays is part of my story at this point, personally and professionally," Voices told RA in the following interview. Her approach to assembling this mix she recorded for us makes that abundantly clear. The mix she recorded for RA—which sprawls out over almost three hours—features tracks that she has either played in her five-year tenure at Nowadays or that she plans to play there in the future. She organized the set in a similar way to the way she goes about her Nowadays sets. She kicks off with fast and nimble bass music ("I like to start fast in hopes of people dancing half-time"), then transitions into a knotty web of dubstep and bright percussive tracks and closes with weightless jungle. The playlist she sourced from to create this mix featured music from every Nowadays resident. It's this same thoughtfulness and meticulous attention to detail that has made her a household name in her local scene.

It was my first Draaimolen and no one knew it which was great. 
It was also my first encounter with Addit Audio and their sound system installed for the first time in its full glory. I can't recall being brought to tears during one soundcheck.
So there were no news, no algorithms, no expectations to be disappointed. The pit was not announced. It felt like a curious manifestation of something paranormal.
Wonderful sound system, records and sweetest weather.  
Those who found us in the small pit in the middle of the forest most likely didn't know what was going on. 
For the most part of the first 5 hours I figured out that it would be great to play for and with the sound guy, playing right and wrong records and figuring out which one sound good. Research and development mission for Addit Audio.
After 5 hours ISAbella joined for a brief back to back session. Everything can happen in the realm of paranormal. Luckily she stayed and we played together for the next 3 hours until the last song, the one for the deceased. Probably as close as it gets to transcendence.

The MFM Mix series continues with Istanbul-born, Amsterdam-based multidisciplinary artist Deniz Omeroglu (@loradeniz), who released her debut album 'SUN SHONE' with us earlier this year. Interview (excerpt) down below.

MFM: Welcome to the series Deniz. Being from Turkey originally, what did your musical upbringing look like? 

LD: There was always music playing in our house - we even had speakers in the bathroom. My dad really enjoyed listening to music; he had an open mind and a great collection of CDs and records. It brought together Western influences, world music, and local sounds. That diversity really shaped my ears and sense of sound from early on. My brother played the piano, so classical music was also part of the atmosphere. I guess I grew up listening to almost everything except electronic dance music. That came into my life later - after graduating from the conservatory and going through my own personal rebellion. 

MFM: Comparing to West-Europe, where you live now, do you feel there's difference in how music plays a role culturally? 

LD: Totally. I think we, as a culture, tend to experience and express emotions more intensely - both internally and outwardly - compared to Northern European countries. So you can often feel that emotional depth and variation in our melodies and rhythmic forms. Just the other day, I found myself wondering... what kind of music would I be making now if I had grown up listening to Chicago house at home?

MFM: You've produced the whole album yourself. Being a classically trained pianist probably helps a lot when creating and writing new music, right? How did you go about writing the songs?

LD: In the past, my creative process was often fueled by pain and drama. But now, I don’t need those emotions to create anymore. Maybe that used to be what made my music distinctive, but now everything feels a lot more free and in flow. Coming from a classical background actually caused years of writer’s block - I often had no idea what to do next. Being classically trained means you're expected to perform everything perfectly. It took a lot of unlearning to let go of that mindset and teach myself that there’s actually more comfort in imperfection. So, rather than being a pianist specifically, it’s more about having music theory to fall back on when I feel stuck - that’s what really helps. But honestly, the most important part of writing new music for me is taking care of myself. All the self work - that’s what keeps my creativity alive.

MFM: When does a song determine if it needs your voice incorporated? And how do you then decide whether its going to be in Turkish or English?

LD: When it comes to language, it’s not really a conscious choice - it just happens naturally. I dream in both Turkish and English, and even while answering these questions, I find myself thinking in both. Sometimes it’s just easier to express something in Turkish, and other times it flows better in English. As for when I decide to use my voice in a song, it really depends. Sometimes melodies come to me while I’m just humming, and other times I feel the need to actually say something. I think of my voice as a human oscillator - just another unique textural element. I use my voice to create percussive or synth-like sounds, layering it in the same way I would with instruments, to add something personal and distinctive.

MFM: Please can you tell us a bit about your mix? 

LD: I think this mix gives off a sense of melancholia but not too much, intimacy, and cerebral energy. It’s not really representative of what I’d play out at clubs, but it’s full of tracks I love listening to, my all time and latest favorites. There’s a lot of slow burners, ghostly sensuality, and a touch of leftfield sass. my intention was to record something as much for the body as for the head in the most mfm way possible. Something light, something fun and something genuine.

The latest Off-Kilter audio submission is a dive into Or:la’s expansive vision of sound - a downtempo mix of slung drums, abstract electronics and heady vocals. As an artist, Or:la navigates effortlessly through many channels of electronic expression. Here, she revisits music from her influential past with a mix that is deep, meandering and rich with texture - nailing the brief with pin-point precision - and transporting us into a dream like state.

In her own words:
 "I kept to the ‘off-kilter' brief for this one and wanted to put together a mix you can just zone out to, with less of the twists and energy shifts I usually go for in my DJ sets. A lot of the tracks mean something personal to me like the Holger Czukay one at the very end, which I first heard at uni around 2012 while watching Morvern Callar in a film studies class - the whole soundtrack really stuck with me and ended up playing a big part in me drifting away from visual arts and getting into music."

Throughout Or:la's journey as an artist, the Derry-born producer and DJ has carved out her own niche and consistently strived to escape categorisation gaining her a BBC Radio 1 Residency, an Essential mix, and DJ Mag's ‘Best DJ’ award. From running DIY parties in abandoned shops whilst studying in Liverpool, to securing some of the best club residencies around the world, Or:la's story is organic and authentic.

Staying true to her explorative propensity, Or:la 's debut album arrived via Fabric Originals in 2024 and is a testament to her ability to fluidly traverse tempos and energies. Or:la takes a similarly chameleonic approach to her DJ sets - although there's an impalpable emphasis on melody, rhythm and texture, you never really know what you might get other than a preference to follow mood over genre. Orlagh Dooley's DIY mentality extends far beyond the DJ booth - as the boss of former Deep Sea Frequency and her current label, Céad, she nurtures a community of diverse artists who share her passion for less categorizable dance music including NIKS, Primrose, Blu Terra and FAFF. The label's releases emphasize quality and creativity across a wide sonic spectrum. Since her debut EP 'UK Lonely' on Hotflush Recordings in 2017, Dooley has collaborated on a broad range of remixes, from David Holmes/Killing Eve's "Unloved" to dance floor-focused labels like Spray and Woozy. Or:la continues to run her queer-focused event series ‘La Potion', which celebrates and shines a spotlight on queer creatives. Now based back in the UK, Orlagh Dooley remains integral to the clubbing scene as a promoter and community builder, pouring her heart and soul into the place where she found her musical voice.
