Back in 2011 we caught up with Martyn as he prepared to release his sophomore album Ghost People on Brainfeeder - conversing away on the obstacle of second album syndrome, his first foray into performing his music live and his early collaborations. Seven years later and an album on Ninja Tune in between, his fourth LP titled Void lands on Berlin's flagship label Ostgut Ton on the 22nd of June. Questioning everything he has done musically in the past, and everything he still wants to do, the album has been described as being written as a means of catharsis, recently being released from the hospital after some unexpected health issues. Turning to Max Roach's 1979 ensemble percussion album M’Boom, however, was the spark in reassessing the elements that drove him to make music in first place.

In his own words: "That was the first record I listened to in my studio after coming out of the hospital. It's a project where Roach works with a slew of top notch percussionists and drummers and rotates them for every composition. Playing this record was such a surreal experience, the first music I consciously listened to after my recovery. I could hear so much space in the music, something I had never noticed before; almost like a 3D experience, with the most striking aspect being the emptiness between the players."

In the space of eight months Martyn would write his fourth album, creating an almost semi-descendant of his first LP Great Lengths sound-wise, yet forging new paths forward in genre. At nine tracks, with no collaborations or vocalists, the music is described as being stripped down its essentials, as Martyn looks to recontextualize his music with elements of Nyabinghi, drum ‘n‘ bass, and gqom. His Truancy Volume, which he calls an 'inspiration mixtape' to compliment Voids, is a collection of music, new and old that he's listened to over the past year. With Digital Mystikz alongside Shed and Objekt alongside Appleblim, Martyn roams through an almost biographical tale of selections, with his love for jazz shining through with the inclusion of London jazz collective Sons Of Kemet. We also caught up with Martyn for the second time on Truants to talk about Voids, how his ideas form, playing live at Panorama Bar and how radio has become more accessible than ever.

With co-signs from Freerotation, Room 4 Resistance (where she is now a resident) and numerous other Berlin parties, Gigsta's expansive record collection has set its sights on dancefloors across the continent. She is a DJ whose mixes evidently display a passion for digging and conjuring up imaginative themes. We caught up with Gigsta to discuss her ascent as a DJ, telling us about her formal radio years on RCV and Canal B, her ongoing research project on early press in electronic music and the wonderful central themes that run through her monthly Fictions show on Cashmere Radio. Incredibly researched and meticulously prepared, the 31 shows, often influenced by her love for literature, range on music inspired by colours, cult novels, quotes, and NASA launches to spoken word specials and Mancuso tributes. Her Truancy Volume comes as no exception to a theme, guiding us through a mix that starts at 140 and does the rare inverse of gradually slowing down to 100bpm, although she's quick to tell us that slower change in tempo doesn't necessarily mean a slower change in energy. From Scratcha DVA remixes of Wiley, to the stylistically versatile sounds of DJ Haram and Hitmakerchinx, to Nord rippling sounds of Johanna Knutsson's recent release on Oscillate, it's a mix that runs the gamut in selection, yet echoes her personality when it comes to music and digging.

I have to tune the car radio manually to get to the place I want to be on Cape Town’s FM bandwidth. The seek button scans over the desired channel even though I’m just a few blocks away from the broadcasting headquarters. Immediately, the old, but familiar hiss of white noise transports me back to my youth and then it pops into life as I get to 89.5. A two-step punchy snare and a syllabic yelping in Zulu greets me on the other side, this sounds more like home.

“You have to listen to Bush Radio” a friend told me the night before, “if you want to hear South African music”. For the past week I’ve been driving around my hometown listening to the ubiquitous sounds of popular music from Europe and USA proliferated by the nationally syndicated stations like 5FM. This has always been the case in South Africa and notwithstanding the community focussed programming from small, inconspicuous stations like Bush Radio, this has remained the broadcasting practise for the most part of my adult life too.

Every time I return to South Africa I’m always astounded and dismayed how very little has changed in that regard, even when in Europe, South African music is being proliferated by DJs and radio everywhere. The sound of GQOM, the band BCUC, a revival of seventies era Fusion, and the newfound interest in the eighties bubblegum sound had all been largely instigated and promoted through European labels and record stores in recent years.

Limited by constricts like the lack of vinyl presses to re-issue music and the fact that most of the original records are harboured in European record collections, it’s obvious why this has happened, but it doesn’t look set to remain this way for much longer. In recent years a DJ, a blog, a label and a record store has come along, all dedicated to changing this, bringing South African music back home and making availeable on the vinyl format again. It all funnels down to one man, Dave Durbach, better known by his DJ alias Okapi, who is tirelessly and selflessly, collecting and re-distributing this music through Afro-Synth, a blog, store and record label dedicated to new and forgotten South African music.

Hailing from Cape Town, where he cut his teeth around the bars and clubs in the small scene around Long Street, playing everything from Hip Hop to Jazz, Dave had always been known as something of a “vinyl junkie” by the locals. At a time when the format was largely forgotten for the more accessible digital formats, Dave would haunt the used record shops in and around Cape Town for obscure records from the eighties. The records largely disregarded as disposable “bubblegum” music by a predominantly white music media, became an obsession for the latent digger in his teens and laid the foundations for what would later become Afro Synth; a blog dedicated to shedding new light on a lost era in South Africa’s rich music history.

Afro Synth garnered attention for its unique and largely untapped source of records from from an apartheid-era South Africa with considered reviews and articles about the artists and the records sound tracking the end of white-minority rule and the first exciting years of post-apartheid South Africa. These were the talented, mostly black artists that remained obscure for the longest time, pressing limited runs of their records on independent labels that were quickly assigned to bargain bins all over SA. He established the blog to highlight these finds and through his words, many South Africans (this writer included) were lead on an extensive journey of discovery through a very niche, and almost forgotten corner of music history.

DJ Python with DJ Bigos - 11 March 2020

Andry co-operates Japan based pajama factory Phingerin with his friends. Aside from that, he seems to spend a lot of time delving deep into a wide area of peculiar music. The mix he sent for Volume 45 is something a bit more conceptual than past mixes, so deserves a bit of an explanation :) 

It’s titled “tic toc”, and is about the physical clicking of a clock. He also imagines it as an audio skit of “someone waking up late” for an obligation. It’s a musing on our relationship with the clock, “sometimes it passes fast, sometimes it feels slow, sometimes it stops, sometimes you forget about it, sometimes you get reminded and the ticking n tocking stays in your mind : /“… It comes off super tender and will no doubt make for a nice companion in a moment like now where time is ticking in a very odd way. 

“Is it this repetitive rhythm that trained us to move to the beat?”

Q. How would you describe yourself?
A. Never thought of myself as an artist. I'd say casual beatmaker and varied dj.

Q. How long have you been a part of the NY music scene?
A. Since 2012. Things have changed so much, way more interesting DJs and diversity in the scene. 

3) Tell us a little bit about this mix.
I wanted to include old and new music but with a cohesive mood. Dub, jazz, psychedelic down tempo that progresses into a bit more upbeat stuff. It's more of a challenge to mix those types of songs and it's something I don't get to do in the club as much as I'd like, so it made it really exciting to put together.
