Lobster Theremin with AK Sports & Pagan - 02 June 2022

PAGAN flys into this week's APECAST. We had a chat with him over on our Instagram about Ireland's endless supply of talent, defining his sound and his musical influences. 

After being named as an AVA Emerging Producer and racking up releases on Lobster Theremin, 1Ø Pills Mate & RRRAAAVVVEEE. The Dublin based musician’s career is only just beginning, but a productive year in the studio has helped him catch the ear of some of dance music’s biggest names, with the likes of DJ Boring, Asquith, and X-Coast playing his music in livestreams and radio shows during 2020. 

Leaping into the Festival circuit, playing Life Festival, Mass Festival, Higher Vision, and Yurt City all within the space of a year. Although global lockdowns put a hold on future festival bookings, he spent his free time writing an abundance of new music, much of which has caught the ears of both DJ’s and online publications. He has already released his debut EP on Lobster Theremin’s 1Ø Pills Mate, which has gained support from Jenson Interceptor, Boston 168, Nastia, and more. His most recent EP ‘Butterfly’ comes via Cheeky Music Group’s RRRAAAVVVEEE imprint. The tracks have already seen airplay on Radio 1, featuring in Prospa’s Essential Mix, and Jaguar’s Introducing show, as well as support from Sasha, TSHA, Alan Fitzpatrick and many more.

Here's the recording of my set from Rave In The Woods at Electric Picnic this year. After three days of camping in the miserable rain & wind, playing loads of high-energy trance, ravey bangers & party-time classics seemed like the best way to lift the spirits in the Forrest. Some pagan bits in here (released & unreleased) plus a few all time favourites + go to weapons. As always, drop your ID requests in the comments and I'll sort them out.

Pagan @ Anachronica | Electric Picnic 2022

After a year spent writing as much music as possible, but (due to a mixture of perfectionism and label issues) a fairly low level of releases, I've finally got a consistent flow of music coming out over the next few months on a variety of labels. Knowing this, it felt like the right time to make a mix featuring all the music that I've been working on for the past 2 years. A lot of it is planned to come out this year, but there are some unsigned bits and some tracks that I have no plans to ever release in there too (this mix might be the only time they make it past the confines of my laptop). Lobster Theremin welcome back label mainstay Daze for another run at the bull with a highly-distilled industrial-infused techno EP for the black label series. 

Taking a purely scorched-earth approach to production, Longhorn finds Daze on typically reverent but ever-more pounding form. Pushing the limits of acceptable lo-fi techno and crushing everything underfoot into one bass-addled debris-strewn mush. 

Title track 'Longhorn' bends and contorts metal, steadily melting surfaces at 2000°C heat, cooking and roasting against a background of charred industrial drones. 'Tool' is the roller, stuck somewhere between the warehouses of Detroit and Berlin and harnessing probably the most rubber kick drum known to man. Dusting off the cerebral pounding is 'Oil Rig'. A muffled, dissonant chime reflecting on our pillaging of the Earth, our unrelenting ambition for natural destruction, forming a breakneck dystopian chant for the new world.

Grammar Of Movement makes his long-awaited debut via Lobster Theremin's main label. A shining light through a hazy prism that refracts a spectrum of techno from it's tinted facets. A sound that shifts between sampled swamps of spoken-word lathered over crushed synths and carpet-covered drum excursions. A raw and cathartic output born out of a period of personal noise and pain. 

Opener 'Faint' is a litmus test for the uninvited, a raw 'n' stepped non-4/4 exploration that draws on early London while curdling it's electro influences through sporadic bursts of acidic electronics and yearning pads. 

'Pitchfight' floats like a low mist over the Persian gulf. Low-lying clouds of mellow colours and tones that dissipate and reform over the sea, as the morning sun splinters the horizon and a radio transmission from another land chunters with it's early announcement. 

'What He Said' throws itself into the melé, amid a frenzy of blown-out vocal snips, rasping raw drum smacks, squelching synths and 90's cheap-keyboard hits. Smoothing out into a soft and tender ambient mid-section, one of GOM's signature indulgences, meandering and playfully hinting at a return to the madness and entropy. 

Closing out the 12" is the understated epic 'Siasi'. A slow-beating political heart, formed of clashing textures, discordant swirling electronics and abrasive, piercing percussion. A painfully drawn-out struggle for freedom.

Jungle - The Heat (Joy Orbison Remix - Bek's TIS '16 Rework)

Lobster Theremin's international family extends into the farthest and occasionally most unlikely of places. The Canary Islands might be a frequent British holiday destination, more associated with lobster tans rather than Lobster Theremin, but it is the foremost techno talent from this small island that caught our ear early in 2014, leading to a hammering debut black label release as well as the newest Mörk 12".

Gilmer Galibard is a Las Palmas resident with an varied yet, uncompromising vision and style. Hammering, undulating, tough, raw, wind-swept and crunchy styles all merge to form something familiar yet startlingly unique. A style of techno that initially felt unaffected by the regular kiss of the sun, suddenly melting away with the warm washes of pad-work, thumping tom lines and 90's Valencian breakbeat house on his most recent release.

This mix is a snapshot of his immense and imposing DJ style - rhythmic, driving, UK-tinged and soaking in alien melodies and textures. A UFO landing on the edge of the Atlantic.

The dim glow cast a hazy flourish of light across the early morning sky. Soon it would fall beneath the surface of sight and the soft moon would vanish into the warm blue of daylight. In the greenhouse the flowers began to blossom and awaken beneath the first hint of the morning glow. The glass flickered beneath the glimmering beams and the murky green shadows within were illuminated and set alight. The rest of the park was quiet and still as the day broke. The night was gone. 

Coastdream is set to release a debut EP on X-Kalay who have consistently released music of supreme quality. This one is a sun kissed, summer ready house track with sublime form.

Here is the recording from my recent headliner show at Piknic Electronic Melbourne in the infamous Sydney Myer Music Bowl. 2021 was my fourth year playing at this amazing event and i am forever thankful to be involved <3 

As per I build my set up starting with stripped back Detroit flavours, into quirky tribal with some fun gangster vocals, for the last part i play some left field, bass heavy techno with psychedelic sounds and finish off with an all time classic by The Prodigy! RIP Keith Xxx
