There are DJs, then there are DJs who capture—and live—a moment in dance music's evolution. Born in Los Angeles, but based in New York for the better half of a decade, Akua has established herself as the latter, an important voice in the North American techno scene. Akua's DJing practice is fueled by her research in the '90s techno music archive, with a special interest in the history and roots of techno within America. 

Akua's sets are raw extensions of the foundations laid by the pioneers of '90s U.S. techno. Most prominently, the work and influence of DJs like Jeff Mills, Claude Young and Jay Denham can all be heard across her mixes, as well as the spirit of Underground Resistance. Her interest in fast-paced techno comes from these traditions as well as own individualist streak—while there's no shortage of DJs who play high-BPM techno, you won't hear anyone else play it quite like she does.

Her old-school meets new-school sound has catapulted her from the New York underground into the European techno circuit, where recent gigs have seen her perform at dance music institutions like Berghain and Dekmantel. Akua's RA Podcast is her in full-throttle mode, featuring all the stripped-down, hypnotic groove of early techno aside rushes of searing acid, carefully speeding up until closing at a healthy sprint.

Surgeon, also known as Anthony Child, has been one of techno's most influential and consistently brilliant artists since the mid-'90s. For the last decade, he has spent most of his creative resources on developing his abilities as a live performer, in his usual techno environment as well as more abstract settings. As Child reinforces in this live Dekmantel Exchange with Aaron Coultate, his live performance practice is at the heart of his creativity. "There was literally one day I woke up and realized that having the computer—DJing, as it were—was getting in the way of taking this form of performing further," he says. "That was determining the structure of what I was doing. And to be truly freeform and improvisational I had to be free of this imposed structure."

This archived conversation comes on the heels of Surgeon's most recent LP, Crash Recoil, which RA music critic Kiana Mickles hailed as "one of his best albums ever." We would like to think we have served up plenty of special treats in our podcast series so far, but this latest one is certainly one that many people will get very excited about. It is not often that Detroit key-figures step out and offer us a window into their current musical world, but that is what we have here from Sherard Ingram aka DJ Stingray. Famed for many reasons—not least for always DJing in a black balaclava—he is founder of the Urban Tribe super group with KDJ, C2 and Shake, was DJ for the legendary electro outfit Drexcyia and is also a fierce DJ and producer in his own right. He came up playing tough techno and electro in hardcore motorcycle clubs in the D, but is now a regular in the world’s finest underground spaces, where he pushes a dark, intense sound that is socially and politically charged. Shades of Miami bass and ghetto tech also characterise his work on labels like Shipwreck, Bleep43, [NakedLunch] and Unknown to the Unknown, and in 2016 he is as busy and prolific as he has ever been. This summer he plays a rather exclusive back to back set with Helena Hauff at our festival in Amsterdam. 

The mix he serves up is a great snapshot of what Stingray does - forces you to dance to his high tempo, high impact sounds. He mixes them quickly and slickly and there is a real sense of urban paranoia and future menace in every tune he reaches for. Sit back, then, and bask in the glory of a real master.
