The Planetary Assault Systems project has been active for some 15 years now, channeling an exploratory theme into cutting edge, non-conformist techno for the clubs but also for listening at home.
His previous album for Ostgut Ton, “Temporary Suspension”, re- instated that classic P.A.S sound and found the dextrous artist touring even more with this tougher, purist techno aesthetic.
And yet again Slater maintains his prolific output with the announcement of “The Messenger”. In his own words it's a project that stays very true and honest to the Planetary Assault Systems goal: a journey of discovery, to create new sounds which are not otherwise present in club music at this time.
From the album's beautiful introduction track “Railer (Further Exploration)”, which floats through the bubbling ether before leading into the mysterious depths of “Beauty In The Fear”, it is clear that Slater's role as sound explorer and adventurer has been dutifully fulfilled.
With the sense of timing that can only be expected from such an experienced DJ and musician, we are led through a series of stand out tracks, where no one feels less pure, yet each has their own voice.
Indeed there's a strong club element present here - Slater play-tested all the tracks and employed a careful editing process to make sure they all fit the description. Highly playable works of club-intended sound art, early heavy moments like “Bell Blocker” or the playful “Wriss” give way to even more severe messages as “Kray Squid” pulses onto the radar with magnetic energy.
The drum barrage of “Rip The Cut” speaks directly to the dancefloor, perhaps the most rhythmically intense moment of the album, which is not to be put lightly as the rolling, filtering tones of “Cold Bolster” and “Black Tea” urge us further into perfectly frenetic moments.

MOTE050 :: Planetary Assault Systems - Deep Heet Vol. 4

Since 2006, the Deep Heet series of recordings has shown the public an especially distinctive side of the production work of Planetary Assault Systems. With a unique ‘engine room’ ambience and a focus upon maintaining a continual surge of pure energy, each volume in the Deep Heet collection has lived up to that title, subtly suggesting the kind of sustained and voluntary temperature rise that has traditionally given way to spiritual or visionary experiences. Just check out tracks such as “Flat Tire” from Volume 3, with its hard percussive edge accompanied by a pervasive hiss like boiling matter changing into gas. P.A.S. helmsman Luke Slater also thinks highly enough of this series to re-work tracks like “Whistle Viper” in recent live sets, or to offer up others (e.g. “Raid”) for remixing by Mote-Evolver allies. 
It’s only appropriate, then, that the 50th overall release on Mote-Evolver should also be the fourth overall volume of Deep Heet. In keeping with Slater’s recent forward-thinking self-assessments like the “Planetary Funk” anniversary series, this is simultaneously a summary of past successes and another new evolution in style and content.  This new set of four highly concentrated cuts shows how effective Planetary Assault Systems can be at fueling the imagination by fusing together rhythmic and incidental elements into a unified, animated meshwork, without even a prominent melody to help out. For example, on the compelling track “Lazer Organical,” listeners will find themselves in the midst of a testing range where thick arcs of coherent plasma ricochet off of the walls. 

Deep Heet Vol. 4 also showcases Slater’s aptitude for choosing just the right moments to deviate from a steady groove: on the mesmerizing bubblebath of “Random Kingdom,” he allows listeners to sink into the rising sonic foam before interjecting with some sharp metallic hits. The leadoff track “Desert Races” proceeds in similar fashion, weaving a web of luminous sequencer patterns around the listener before and cutting in with sudden fluctuations or distortions that function like a hypnotist’s suggestions after an entranced patient has become fully responsive. “Life Rhythm,” on the other hand, is a total immersion session in which Slater’s presence seems to recede into the background and listeners themselves may begin imagining overtones and sonic ephemera that weren’t programmed into the original track.

MOTE050 :: Planetary Assault Systems - Random Kingdom B1

Brainchild of Multi Culti A&R, Sascha Funke and Niklas Wandt were introduced by Dreems, who charted a course for the seasoned Berlin-based producer and funky multi-percussionist and singer. 

Wandt was just about to enter the scene forcefully with his collaborative 2LP with Wolf Müller and the debut single of his band Neuzeitliche Bodenbeläge. In the icey cold of his warehouse rehearsal space, Funke had him record a variety of slapped, bowed and scratched percussions (congas, talking drum, prepared cymbals played with a bass bow) over his tracks. These first efforts were later expanded into joint sessions at Sascha's home studio and, within a few weeks, the journey reached it’s destination: Wibe strasse, Deutschland.

At first glance, they seem an odd couple: a techno veteran of almost thirty years meets a side-burned upstart socialized in Free Jazz and Krautrock. but the shared sonic influences come through in the hypnotic, dubbed-out sound, perhaps rooted in the close connection the two share to the Rheinland region in West Germany, Funke as part of the Kompakt family and Wandt by origin and socialization in the Cologne and Düsseldorf music scene centered around the Salon des Amateurs. Regional flavours, global appeal. Multi Culti, promoting local collaboration, one freaky record at a time.

The Warp Records Bleep × takeover marked the last event at our pop-up shop in Dalston. Mira Calix, Plaid and Special Request all delivered sets that were energetic, playful and ultimately; incredibly fun. This mix from Plaid starts from the off at 100% and stays there till the end. From the first kickdrum to the final squelch, this is a constant roller bursting with heart palpitating energy.  60 minutes of pure vibrancy with a breakbeat or two thrown in for good measure - fitting for a final big blow out!

No frills or faff about this set, just banger after glorious banger from Warp kingpins.

'Kometenschweif' will sound the most familiar to fans of Sascha Funke's club-ready tracks, with percussive and vocal flourishes from Niklas Wandt.  'Kreidekreis' takes the tempo down while ramping up the trippiness, a circular journey into funk bass, synth prog, and again, a percussion masterclass. Finally 'Weg Vom Leder' sounds like a lost Falco tune, brought up to date.

On the remix side, Alexander Arpeggio somehow manages to swing 'Kreidekreis' into a digital reggae slowburner, while Whodamanny turns Kometenschweif toward indie-kraut-wave bop.
