Katy Shorten, Research and Development Manager at Research in Practice talks to Georgie Steele about the power of storytelling. 

Georgie shares her experience of being a parent carer and how storytelling has helped her to gain perspective on her situation, including what has happened and how she copes in her caring role. She describes how stories can help remind us of the ‘main character’ in the story, and to keep the person receiving care and support at the centre of things. This is reinforced when Georgie shares the experiences of other parent carers who took part in ‘Lockdown Cinderella’, a project which used the familiar format of fairytales to make sense of their carer experiences – resulting in carers feeling ‘heard’ and able to process experiences, and even finding solutions to situations they were experiencing at the time.

Lead author Carlene Firmin (University of Bedfordshire) and Research in Practice Director Dez Holmes discuss the Safeguarding and exploitation – complex, contextual and holistic approaches: Strategic Briefing. They reflect on the holistic approach needed to protect children and young people who are, or who are at risk of, being exploited. The current system is arguably not designed to meet the needs and risks that young people face outside the family home. They explain the rationale behind complex, contextual, transitional and holistic safeguarding approaches and how they overlap and complement each other. Looking at a case example, they outline how the child protection system needs to adapt strategically and operationally in order to respond to the harm that this young person faced. They also discuss the importance of working with parents as partners and the need to work with communities to enable an effective safeguarding response for young people facing harm outside of the home.

Kate Kayley, Learning and Development Officer at Research in Practice for Adults, speaks to Greater Manchester’s Complex Safeguarding lead Jayne Horan and Detective Sergeant Deborah Hurst of Programme Challenger in the Modern Slavery Unit. 

Relevant to both rural and urban areas, they discuss definitions of cuckooing, criminal exploitation and county lines in the context of what the issues look like in Greater Manchester. They consider what the harm can look like to young people and adults who are exploited, how to see those who are exploited as victims and not just perpetrators, and begin to outline the system-wide shifts needed to tackle exploitation and offer support.
