Audiences will impose meaning as they see fit, relative to their own contexts, and the convergence of our emotional literacy can draw us to one another. In 2018, Ripperton gifted the ESP Institute with 'Sight Seeing,' and we quickly became tourists joining the artist's departure from the comforts of his known creative narratives, however, with his tender monument of devotion, 'Contrails,' we now find ourselves blissfully lost in his code. These expansive 73 minutes are punctuated midway by a poignant solitary confession — “I’m afraid of what I might find, but I’m even more afraid of not facing this fear. I love you. I love you more than my life.” — in accordance with the fundamentals of Minimalism, the vast negative space bookending these words undoubtedly amplifies their significance.

“I’m afraid of what I might find…” Communication comes easy for some artists; the tools are obvious, logical and tangible, the dialogue is palatable and their art is often inoffensive. For others, there may be conflict, trauma or fear that result in pragmatic challenges — the tools feel foreign, deep complexities give way to creative paralysis, and communication struggles to find its form and emerge — the art becomes as much a therapeutic confessional as is a formal exercise.

“…But I’m even more afraid of not facing this fear…” Within the residue of the artist’s emotional labor, full of nuance, reservation and vulnerability, is potent code that can neither be taught nor learned, an elusive unknown whose shadows some spend a lifetime chasing, trying in vain to articulate or translate, often at their own peril.

“…I love you. I love you more than my life.” It’s this code that inexplicably tethers the soul to art — music being perhaps the most magnetic attractor of all — capable of true love upon first encounter. The blood flows like rapids, the hairs on the back of the neck stand erect, the heart surrenders absolutely to a romantic chemistry and a mutual bond is forged, a love to defend with vigor. We own the music and the music owns us. We are enamored, without words, simply head-over-heels.

Marc Romboy's Systematic Recordings look to inspire once again with the release of an exclusive 'Mini-Album" from the Swiss producer, Ripperton. 

Following the huge success of "Niwa", his album for Joris Voorn's Green imprint and riding the constant wave of support for his productions on Music Man, Freerange, CLR, Versatile and of course his very own Perspectiv imprint, Ripperton looks to continue and further his reign as one of the most respected producers in the business with the release of "Lost In Colours." 

The Mini-Album opens with four new original Ripperton productions. "Lost In Colors (Tobias Welcome Song)" with its tear-like droplets and orchestral melody is the perfect opening act. The smooth vocal and warm acid line of "I Haven't Seen Much" follows, backed by the epic techno outing that is "Farraway." The originals are rounded off with the dramatic percussive cut, "Flume."

‘Norwegian cuisine is very characteristic. Traditionally a Norwegian dish does not contain much spices, so the taste of the food is very much straight from nature. Some Norwegian food could be considered a bit hardcore for some, but also enviromentally friendly, as it is built on old traditions of using the resources in your immediate surroundings…’

That’s Hans-Peter Lindstrøm, Norway’s finest disher-up of cosmic techno, who’s whipped up a pumping new album with tracks titled like a tasting menu of his homeland’s underrated cuisine, from soup to nuts. Well, not quite: it’s more like ‘Raakost’ (raw vegetables) to ‘Vafler’ (waffles) – with lashings of ‘Lammelaar’ (dried salted lamb meat), ‘Vossakorv’ (‘a sheep-sausage made in Voss’), and ‘Eggedosis’ (‘what you get when you mix eggs and sugar with a blender. Kids love it… At least, I did when I was younger!’). Yum!

Smalhans was recorded immediately after Lindstrøm’s last, more experimental album Six Cups Of Rebel in July 2011, and its unashamedly 4/4 techno rhythms and bubbling, nutritious analogue synth sounds – mixed by friend and collaborator Todd Terje – are set to inject a vitamin kick to dancefloors everywhere. Lindstrøm’s gorgeous arpeggiations and chord changes can sound mathematical at times (check the clockwork mechanism of ‘Faarikal’), but it’s all born of his intuitive approach to his gear.

‘The process is definitely intuitive. I try all sorts of combination of chords and changes, and just know when something interesting happens. I find myself getting lost in the details. Weighing the ingredients, trying to find the right balance. A little more of this, a little less of that. Making the same dish over and over again, hoping it gets even better. Trying out new recipes and ingredients. Eating it up, and starting again the next day. Just like spending time in the studio…’

Lindstrøm spends a lot of time in that studio, preferring a normal working day and quiet nights at home with his family. In the distant past he has been a folk/country keyboardist, but bought his first sampler around 1999 after moving from his birthplace, Stavanger, to Oslo. With that real-instrument background, he still considers himself an outsider in the hi-tech world of contemporary dance music, but that perspective allows him greater freedom. He has collaborated with Prins Thomas and Christabelle, and remixed LCD Soundsystem, Roxy Music, Franz Ferdinand, Glasser, Best Coast and many more. As a solo artist Lindstrøm has released three albums, It´s A Feedelity Affair in 2006, Where You Go I Go Too in 2008 and Six Cups Of Rebel in 2012, and he’s a several-times winner of the Norwegian Grammy awards.

If today’s minimal dance music is leaving you feeling a bit starved, Smalhans’s full-fat analogue sound will fill you up and keep you glowing. ‘Electronic music is moving in so many directions,’ says Lindstrøm, ‘it’s hard to keep track of all the various twists and turns. Trends come and disappear, new subgenres of subgenres erupt and fade away faster then ever. But the beat lives on, it just comes in new colours and shapes.’

There is a phrase often told that goes something to the effect of, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. That a single thing made up of many others can eclipse them all. Puzzles, or paintings seem to spring to mind immediately. Credit for this phrase goes to the philosopher Aristotle for first uttering that thought a few thousand years ago, among his other accomplishments but I digress. Our ‘whole’, our ‘thing’ for today and for a very long while, is Zendama.

Presented in two parts, Zendama is an eight track compilation compiled by Swiss producer and dj, Ripperton. Zendama, for the curious, means ‘Good person’ in Japanese and is remarkably apt for this body of work. To quote Ripperton when talking about the release, “The common point between all these pieces is that the people who made them are all wonderful humans involved in making good music and keeping a positive spirit.” That spirit is what I believe binds the pieces and elevates this compilation beyond the sum of its ‘parts’. Each track within could very well be a standalone A side. There is no filler, there is no obscure for the sake of. What you do have is 8 tracks balanced incredibly well, in vibe, in detail, that make sense as a whole.

With all of this in mind, the premiere for today is none other than Ripperton himself’s offering on the compilation, Indian tree. Sitting at the end of part one, Indian tree is the embodiment of a feeling of movement twisting through time and space, touched ever so slightly by passing bodies. This movement of soaring pads and leads, coupled with a pattering percussion almost evoke a mental scene of rain falling on an ocean. 

From the emotional highs of Jackmates dub of Rerun, to Mary Yalex’s piercing leads on How U really feel and the cryptic depths of Luminous Black & Emerald, Zendama encompasses a wide realm of simply good music. That almost seems like a dis-service to say but in this case I believe hyperbole isn’t needed. If you enjoyed Indian tree, picking up the rest of the compilation is a must and can be done at bandcamp. We highly recommend it.
