Otherworldly sounds pulsed from different structures around the huge field, each housing their own unique sonics, decor and crowd. Throughout the night people journeyed around these spaces, hoping that whatever lay inside would reinvigorate or relax their mind and body. By dawn, the effects of the night had taken their toll, and bodies had become spirits floating in the air, far above solid ground...

2013 marked Moscow duo Simple Symmetry's first musical outing, and since they've notched up eight more EPs for labels like Disco Halal, Low Budget Family and XXX. Now, following three years of blood, sweat and tears, they're putting out their first long player 'Sorry! We Did Something Wrong' into the world.

Made up of 11 tracks, the album signals a different and more expansive sound than their previous efforts. Pulling from a host of different eras and influences—there's nods to early and mid 90s artists like Weatherall, Death In Vegas and St Etienne, while at other moments they dive into 60s and 70s grooves, licks and harmonies à la Beach Boys and The Monkees. Crafting their own singular sound world, full of colourful and psychedelic sonics bursting with flutes, cello, synths, sitar, guitars and percussion, the pair have made a wonderful record that is "a tonic for these uncertain times".

Scenes from our Classic Future is the realization of three songs and two projects that came together as one. As young aspiring musicians since the early age of 12, Greg Paulus and John Camp practiced playing jazz standards into the wee small hours of the morning together. Eventually the two would find themselves both in New York under new and more electronic circumstances. Deeply indebted to the mastery of Herbie Hancock, Paulus and Camp would reconnect, this time with synthesizers, and continue on their musical journey together.  

On one particular day, Camp played Paulus a track titled Remo. Paulus instantly fell in love with the track but both felt it needed something more… Paulus insisted on laying down vocals and within 15 minutes had the lyrics written out and soon after added trumpet. 

Around the same time Paulus was revisiting Surf Song, a track he and Brian Derdiarian had been working on sporadically for some time. The two would record long one-take jams on trumpet, Juno 106, and guitar, feeding them all thru looping and delay pedals. From these sessions they would find a stride and in addition to Surf Song, record Fire in the Sky. Similar to Remo, Fire in the Sky would come together in a lightning bolt sort of way. When adding the final touches, Camp was around and was enlisted to add piano which would bring the whole EP together. 
  
With the three tracks complete, Paulus began to see a correlation between them all. Each, in one way or another embodied the feeling of when the beach meets the ocean. Remo was distinctly reminiscent of their times spent on Rockaway Beach: The trips out in the car or bus, drinking and smoking on the shore and slowly making their way back into the Brooklyn night to get crazy. Fire in the Sky and Surf Song had a distinct West Coast vibe, most likely due to the fact that Derdiarian, being from California, could not help but bring that West Coast swagger to the music. At the end of the day, the idea of having their good friend Tanner Ross add his signature touch to the project was a necessity. Ross would take Remo and make it his own hazy gem. With that, Paulus would end up with four songs that reminded him of that special place where the sand hits the ocean.  

As luck would have it Paulus would manage to take two pictures (found on the 12") that perfectly encapsulated his feelings for these songs. One, a beautiful day on the Rockaways and the other, a lucky ride in his buddy's Corvette Stingray up the Pacific Coast Highway to Malibu. 

Scenes from our Classic Future is a collection of songs that Paulus, Camp, and Derdiarian love and have labored over for a long time. They hope you enjoy them as much as they do.

I was lucky enough to capture my short but sweet DJ set at the Dreamland, Weekender on Friday, July, 28th. We had such an unforgettable time all weekend at this intimate friends and family campout/gathering playing music, eating epic food, dancing by the lake, under the moon, stars and in the wilderness!

Lena Platonos is a pioneer of the Greek electronic music scene of the 1980s. She produced and released her second solo album, ‘Gallop’, in 1985 that we reissued in 2015. The album is made exclusively using analog synthesizers and heavily features the iconic Roland TR-808 drum machine. Lena narrates each song, reciting her own surreal Greek poetry with unique skill. Lena says of ‘Gallop’, “It’s a study in the mythology of urban population of the contemporary metropolis and also a gaze into the future life of it.”
We’ve asked Red Axes to chose their four favorite songs from ‘Gallop’ and create remixes for each one. Red Axes is Tel-Aviv based producers and DJs Dori Sadovnik and Niv Arzi, releasing their own productions and remixes since 2009 on I’m a Cliché, Correspondant and Hivern Discs. The duo was raised on a steady diet of post-punk, new-wave and Italo-disco at fogged out warehouse and basement parties. They’ve transform “Witches” and “And We Hear “I Love You”” into solid dancefloor tools. “No. 9” and “Liqueur Ruby” transport the listener to a hypnotic state tripped out in a psychedelic mist, with the latter featuring middle eastern rhythms by fellow Tel Aviv musicians The Dirty Lizards.
All songs have been mastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The jacket riffs off the original ‘Gallop’ cover, isolating the photograph of Lena layered on a grid backdrop designed by Eloise Leigh. Each copy includes a two-sided postcard with a manipulated frame from one of Lena’s music videos. “In an era where we are obsessed with nostalgia, Red Axes achieved something against that grain while still paying homage to the underrated greats that came before them.” – Anthem Magazine
