Tulukkat is the plural of tulugaq “raven”. The symbolism of the raven is often complex and appears frequently in the stories of peoples around the world. As a mediator between life and death in both Celtic and Inuit traditions this song blends the Irish Bodhran drum played by Deirdre Dooley with the raven’s call throat song which was formed after many years of practice by Charlotte Qamaniq. The song is dedicated to Qamaniq’s father Marcel Mason who was of Irish descent, and adopted into the Qamaniq family of Iglulik, Nunavut.

This iconic song by Edwin Starr is one of the best-known protest songs form the Vietnam War era in the US.  It was also one of the first Motown songs to make a political statement.  Dance music with a purpose.  I wanted to spread the message and play this in my sets... Hope you dig it.

Ottawa Yoga sensation Ichih Wang and Juno Nominated DJ-Producer Rise Ashen have teamed up to create a series of events called Shakti (Sanskrit word denoting the energy of empowerment) - Ichih leads the practice and DJ Rise Ashen takes you through an aural palette spanning dub, experimental ambient and downtempo beats from the 4 corners of the world.

This Mix is made from music Rise played during the second installment of Shakti, during the summer of 2013.  It is a one-hour mix appropriate for a Hatha yoga practice... Whether you teach or like to practice to music, you will enjoy this flow... It's ambient and deep calming music, but it comes from the same beatconscious place as all of Rise's music, that crossroads between innovation, tradition and street...

DJ Rise Ashen - Root2Rise 2025 at Mont Sainte Marie QC

Common Ground was Rise Ashen and Trevor Walker's first and only full-length, initially released on Canada's defunct, but classic Fossilfuel Recordings. Journeying alongside these two acclaimed DJ-producers, one experiences percussive dance at its most savvy, refined and soulful.  I would characterize it as a mix of Acid Jazz, Downtemp Lo-Fi with Reggae and Dub with various "World" elements thrown in.

Take It Easy (Dusty Johnston's Rainy Daze Mix)

Last summer I had a visit from my childhood music teacher, the amazing Montreal-based jazz flute, sax, guitar and percussion player Jeff "Wind In" May.  It had been at least 25 years since we had jammed, and it was wonderful to reconnect with him and make this little piece together at my studio in Ottawa.  He walked into the studio with a tiny wooden bamboo flute and it's hard to believe the depth of sound he can attain with such a minimal instrument. Came across this track the other day and it took me back to 2007, hard to believe it's been ten years... Made this with my man Stephane Lefrancois when we were both living in Ottawa, Kind Sunshine was an amazing band run by Marc Shapiro out of Toronto... it featured a slew of amazing musicians over the years... Felt so blessed to get to make this mix with my homie Steflef and it never got released though I have played it at countless parties over the years...  I got in touch with Marc whom I came across again recently at Unity Hip Hop Festival in TO last summer and he gave me the blessing to give it away, so here you are!

Ancient Future 1

So honored to get to be a aprt of the remixes for Bardo (Andrew McPherson - Eccodek)'s new project... This song hit me hard when I first heard it...  It's a bittersweet ironic testament to the art we make.  To playing for 4 walls and the bartender... To devoting your life to an artform that has changed so much in the last 15 years... Really spoke to my soul...  Did cuts on this one which is rare and a throwback for me... Hope you dig...

Fell upon the amazing Eivør Pálsdóttir and this incredible performance which you can watch on youtube here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LpiFmZLICgM along with 3.5 Million other people who have watched this.   Chopped it up so I could play it, added a really old-school hip hop beat, pretty minimal really what I did to it, but the result's like nothing I have ever heard before and it gets great reactions when I play it out... Hope you dig!

Lovers' Rawk II

Excited to present my new collaboration with the super talented Aki (Theland) Kicknosway... Theland is a young Cree-Potawatomi singer whom I first had the pleasure of working with when he was a guest on the Flying Down Thunder and Rise Ashen album North Wind back in 2013... We are 30 years apart but we have been brothers since we met... Check out this song, our appeal for peace and unity... Music crossing generational and social boundaries we hope to inspire others to break down barriers and spread love throughout creation.

Everyone loves the Sun… some love the Moon too! A few Moonlighting DJ/ Producers, inspired by the original Moon People album (released June 2012) set out to take the songs for another turn in space.

Here we have Ancient Astronauts remixing the title song featuring The Real Live Show & Kathrin deBoer (Belleruche) into a straight ahead Hip-Hop groover.  Los Angeles producer Yukicito  took "Mirage" deeper in the desert over to Mauritania & Nigeria with nice live horns, while Canadian house producer Rise Ashen follows up with 2 deep 4 to the floor remixes of "Peaceful Island Life"  for the late night. Also included are the Ancient Astronauts instrumental and a special bonus instrumental version of "Alekuban" from the album. Enjoy!
