Another rendition of the traditional song Kuurvaluk “The River”, this ambient production grew out of an experiment where Rise used a vocoder on the throat song, allowing the vocals to control a string synthesizer. This gives the effect that the singers are “playing” the synth and adds layers to kuurvaluk’s unique song structure that allows three throat singers to sing it as a round rather than the more typical call and response.

Pandemonium

Originally presented live as part of EVERYSEEKER festival. This project was a call-and-response song using an adaptation of traditional throat songs Nirliit “geese” and Naujaat “seagulls” and included a video accompaniment with Inuvialuk/Gwichin visual artist Darcie Bernhardt from Tuktuujaatuq. The song was composed in the frenetic early days of the COVID 19 pandemic, hence the title and off-kilter energy.

Atangi means “together” in Inuktitut. In our music we promote unity and reconciliation, this song invites you to join us in solidarity.

The Inuktitut word for breath. Inhale and feel your lungs swell, hear the heartbeat in your ears, and exhale. The power and control you hear in katajjaq requires mastery of breath. Take time occasionally to be conscious of your breath. It is the source of your power while here in flesh and blood.

Supijuq is the action of a river bursting its banks, this is a rendition of Kuurvaluk “The River”. Featuring Sami yoiker Risten Anine.  The song originated with a commission by the Anchorage Museum for their NxN Northern Conference and then morphed into a cross-cultural collaboration, the roots of which span two continents and thousands of years of Inuit and Sami tradition. These traditions survive to this day despite the threats posed by historic colonialism and neocolonialism.

Iparauti
Written and performed by Charlotte Qamaniq, Charlotte Carleton, Rise Ashen and Theland Kicknosway

Iparauti translates to “whip”. Featuring the multitalented pow wow dancer and youth advocate Theland Kicknosway of Potawatomi and Cree descent. This song gives space to Indigenous men, the title paying homage to the whips that Inuit men use to manage their dog teams. Indigenous men sing, drum, hunt, protect, and provide for their families but during colonization these traditional roles were derided, diminished, or outright destroyed by the Government of Canada. We see the causal impact today with Indigenous men having the highest rates of incarceration and suicide in the country. 

In this song we use the qilauti (Inuit drum) which was occasionally used as a tool for peaceful conflict resolution. Each person would take turns to drum and air their grievances usually to the point of hurling silly insults, resulting in laughter and a loosening of tensions. We want to remind men that they are important, loved, and valued. Sapiliqtailigissi, don’t give up.

This iconic song by Edwin Starr is one of the best-known protest songs form the Vietnam War era in the US.  It was also one of the first Motown songs to make a political statement.  Dance music with a purpose.  I wanted to spread the message and play this in my sets... Hope you dig it.

Rise Ashen - Deepworld 20

Common Ground was Rise Ashen and Trevor Walker's first and only full-length, initially released on Canada's defunct, but classic Fossilfuel Recordings. Journeying alongside these two acclaimed DJ-producers, one experiences percussive dance at its most savvy, refined and soulful.  I would characterize it as a mix of Acid Jazz, Downtemp Lo-Fi with Reggae and Dub with various "World" elements thrown in.

Ashen & Walker - Dub One

Remix of brilliant Ugandan Artist Geoffrey Oryema.  I had made a bootleg remix of this song in 2001 and when Louie Vega started playing it, my friends Mike Fu Fresco and Jojo Flores at Gotsoul Records managed to get us the parts and license a bunch of remixes.   Trevor Walker and I made this remix with the parts we got, and we had our friend Stephane Vera (Teknostep) play some Rhodes on it... This version never came out but it's my favorite... Enjoy!

Last summer I had a visit from my childhood music teacher, the amazing Montreal-based jazz flute, sax, guitar and percussion player Jeff "Wind In" May.  It had been at least 25 years since we had jammed, and it was wonderful to reconnect with him and make this little piece together at my studio in Ottawa.  He walked into the studio with a tiny wooden bamboo flute and it's hard to believe the depth of sound he can attain with such a minimal instrument.  Jeff can be reached at www.jeffmaymusic.com and I highly recommend him as a teacher, he achieved the greatest of feats with me, helping to develop a lifelong love of music in my life...

Reunion with Jeff "Wind In" May

Came across this track the other day and it took me back to 2007, hard to believe it's been ten years... Made this with my man Stephane Lefrancois when we were both living in Ottawa, Kind Sunshine was an amazing band run by Marc Shapiro out of Toronto... it featured a slew of amazing musicians over the years... Felt so blessed to get to make this mix with my homie Steflef and it never got released though I have played it at countless parties over the years...  I got in touch with Marc whom I came across again recently at Unity Hip Hop Festival in TO last summer and he gave me the blessing to give it away, so here you are!

Ancient Future 1

So honored to get to be a aprt of the remixes for Bardo (Andrew McPherson - Eccodek)'s new project... This song hit me hard when I first heard it...  It's a bittersweet ironic testament to the art we make.  To playing for 4 walls and the bartender... To devoting your life to an artform that has changed so much in the last 15 years... Really spoke to my soul...  Did cuts on this one which is rare and a throwback for me... Hope you dig...

Chopped it up so I could play it, added a really old-school hip hop beat, pretty minimal really what I did to it, but the result's like nothing I have ever heard before and it gets great reactions when I play it out... Hope you dig!

Everyone loves the Sun… some love the Moon too! A few Moonlighting DJ/ Producers, inspired by the original Moon People album (released June 2012) set out to take the songs for another turn in space.

Here we have Ancient Astronauts remixing the title song featuring The Real Live Show & Kathrin deBoer (Belleruche) into a straight ahead Hip-Hop groover.  Los Angeles producer Yukicito  took "Mirage" deeper in the desert over to Mauritania & Nigeria with nice live horns, while Canadian house producer Rise Ashen follows up with 2 deep 4 to the floor remixes of "Peaceful Island Life"  for the late night. Also included are the Ancient Astronauts instrumental and a special bonus instrumental version of "Alekuban" from the album. Enjoy!
