Originally presented live as part of EVERYSEEKER festival. This project was a call-and-response song using an adaptation of traditional throat songs Nirliit “geese” and Naujaat “seagulls” and included a video accompaniment with Inuvialuk/Gwichin visual artist Darcie Bernhardt from Tuktuujaatuq. The song was composed in the frenetic early days of the COVID 19 pandemic, hence the title and off-kilter energy.

In this tongue-in-cheek dancefloor number we play with the Inuktitut expressions for “it’s hot”, uquu, and “it’s cold”, ikkii. It’s a reminder of the all-important role that the weather “Sila” plays in our lives.

The Inuktitut word for breath. Inhale and feel your lungs swell, hear the heartbeat in your ears, and exhale. The power and control you hear in katajjaq requires mastery of breath. Take time occasionally to be conscious of your breath. It is the source of your power while here in flesh and blood.

The Ijirait are the powerful shapeshifters of Inuit legend. They are elusive creatures with the ability to transform in order to disguise themselves. Inuit who possess a sharp intuition can sense their presence by how the Ijirait distort reality around them. In this call and response song between Tanya and Cynthia, they play a game of hide and seek, the Ijiraq remaining ever elusive to the one who seeks.

You gaze upon the Moon, a luminous golden crescent that fills your vision while distant stars blaze on in the background as they have for millenia. You’re at the edge, Avataanut, and there's no way that you can stay here. In this fleeting moment it is for you to decide. Will you set forth into the great unknown? Or will you return?

This iconic song by Edwin Starr is one of the best-known protest songs form the Vietnam War era in the US.  It was also one of the first Motown songs to make a political statement.  Dance music with a purpose.  I wanted to spread the message and play this in my sets... Hope you dig it.

Ottawa Yoga sensation Ichih Wang and Juno Nominated DJ-Producer Rise Ashen have teamed up to create a series of events called Shakti (Sanskrit word denoting the energy of empowerment) - Ichih leads the practice and DJ Rise Ashen takes you through an aural palette spanning dub, experimental ambient and downtempo beats from the 4 corners of the world.

This Mix is made from music Rise played during the second installment of Shakti, during the summer of 2013.  It is a one-hour mix appropriate for a Hatha yoga practice... Whether you teach or like to practice to music, you will enjoy this flow... It's ambient and deep calming music, but it comes from the same beatconscious place as all of Rise's music, that crossroads between innovation, tradition and street...

I had made a bootleg remix of this song in 2001 and when Louie Vega started playing it, my friends Mike Fu Fresco and Jojo Flores at Gotsoul Records managed to get us the parts and license a bunch of remixes.   Trevor Walker and I made this remix with the parts we got, and we had our friend Stephane Vera (Teknostep) play some Rhodes on it... This version never came out but it's my favorite... Enjoy!

Last summer I had a visit from my childhood music teacher, the amazing Montreal-based jazz flute, sax, guitar and percussion player Jeff "Wind In" May.  It had been at least 25 years since we had jammed, and it was wonderful to reconnect with him and make this little piece together at my studio in Ottawa.  He walked into the studio with a tiny wooden bamboo flute and it's hard to believe the depth of sound he can attain with such a minimal instrument.  Jeff can be reached at www.jeffmaymusic.com and I highly recommend him as a teacher, he achieved the greatest of feats with me, helping to develop a lifelong love of music in my life...

So honored to get to be a aprt of the remixes for Bardo (Andrew McPherson - Eccodek)'s new project... This song hit me hard when I first heard it...  It's a bittersweet ironic testament to the art we make.  To playing for 4 walls and the bartender... To devoting your life to an artform that has changed so much in the last 15 years... Really spoke to my soul...  Did cuts on this one which is rare and a throwback for me... Hope you dig...

Chopped it up so I could play it, added a really old-school hip hop beat, pretty minimal really what I did to it, but the result's like nothing I have ever heard before and it gets great reactions when I play it out...
