The collaboration between Alex Blackstock and Dan Sherman was born out of salty, sultry Playa dust. Both resident DJs in San Francisco, and best friends to boot, it wasn't until something happened over that silt-covered mixer in the burning desert that their styles coalesced into unforgettable sunrise sessions, and delicate afternoons on the Esplanade. 

Mixed live on 1200s after a few intense late nights of brainstorming and storyboarding, this set is the debut release of Alex and Dan's collaborative identity. Playing as the symbiotic duo Solomon & Sadao, we want to share some of that dusty magic with the Desert Hearts community. If you enjoy what you hear, give us a LIKE to help us win an opportunity to do what we love and play out some positive vibes at this fall's festival.

Alex and Dan are co-founders of Concept (https://www.facebook.com/ConceptSF), an experiment in musical communication, and Sui Generis, an intimate underground event series in San Francisco that brings electronic music artists who've never been to San Francisco, to San Francisco (first Lake People, then Canson, next, on Halloween, DoubtingThomas).

Although Alessio Mereu had released a number of 12” EPs over the
preceding years, last summer’s Tripolarity full-length what was really
gained him international recognition. Now he’s known far beyond his
Mediterranean shores, DJing around Europe and getting requests from
veteran labels Cocoon and Poker Flat who have released some of his
tracks over the past months. Earlier this year, AMAM issued the
Tripolarity Remixes package which brought new perspectives on the
acclaimed album, but other than that he hasn’t had an EP of original
material. Now AMAM is happy to change that with Those I’ve Left
Behind.

“Distraught Again” is structured on subtly evolving percussion and a
swaggery bassline with drops of acid accentuating the tension. It’s
got echoes of the kind of tracks produced back from before Mereu was
even born, but with the kind of precision tailored for contemporary
club soundsystems. Guido Schneider puts his own spin on “Distraught
Again” by enhancing the staccato factor, focusing more on rhythmic
interplay than the original version’s melodic leanings.

Elsewhere, “Those I’ve Left Behind” combines jacking beats with long,
curving, winding synth lines that evoke a menacing atmosphere,
crescendoing into a climax where all the track’s elements get tangled
into a hot mess. Finally, as a digital-only bonus, “I’m the Machine”
continues the jacking flavor with a defiant, robotic beast that stomps
onto the dancefloor. Front to back, Those I’ve Left Behind shows that
Alessio Mereu is undeniably moving forward with his productions…
