Juno Minimal Podcast -Manchester Underground Music mixed by Sean Biddle & Ben A

When Oscar asked me to do something different, I was a bit perplexed as to what to do since I had a lot of "different" gigs happen lately.

However I realized that there are two of my all-time favourite songs that I never played out because of odd BPM; 'Recoil - Shunt' and 'Speedy J - Amoco Cadiz'. So I thought why not make a mix based on those two songs? 

Said and done I started compiling tracks for a few weeks that were 150-170BPM.

The actual mix planning was a lot shorter than usual, as I tried to play the songs just once before recording. Normally I spend many days setting the track order for a podcast, but somehow these songs just worked from the first take. It was quite a different experience to play this music, as I went from a hypnotic state into really fast dancing. One hour later I was drenched in sweat and you're listening to the result now. Funnily neither of the inspirational tracks made it into the final take, so I heartily recommend you search them out.

February 2016 sees the 3rd anniversary of Houndstooth, and the label mark this with their 50th release. ‘Tessellations’ is a compilation of brand new, exclusive tracks from each of the 14 artists to release on the label.

The release serves to simultaneously trace common threads and highlight tensions within such a stylistically expansive roster.

Presented on a double CD and digitally, ‘Tessellations’ charts a path from Guy Andrews and Aïsha Devi’s widescreen soundscapes and the offbeat electronic pop of 18+ and Snow Ghosts, through the analogue 4/4 pulse of Marquis Hawkes and Shift Work, to Akkord and Special Request’s visceral re-imagining of hardcore.

Tracks from Call Super, Throwing Snow and Second Storey occupy those hard-to-define – yet often most exciting – spaces in between, gluing together the selection along with contributions from House of Black Lanterns, Soft as Snow and _Unsubscribe_.

EDITIONS MEGO/MIDNIGHT SHIFT/SANDWELL DISTRICT

Rivet’s debut album On Feather and Wire – released 20 years into his career at the end of 2020 on the revered Editions Mego label – surprised and delighted with its punk spirit, industrial pulse, sensual atmospherics, and body music flavor, gave us a better sense of what the Malmö favorite is capable of. Hinted at by his work as the body music enthusiast behind Kess Kill record label and the years honing his production skills, first as Grovskopa and then as Rivet, his current sound has a sophisticated slink and a surprisingly accessible twist of pop, while still recognizable in its dance music lineage.

Winter 2023 saw Rivet’s second album ‘L+P-2′ dropped on Midnight Shift Records, with RA calling it, “A touching and occasionally searing portrait of grief through the lens of post-punk techno.” It came with accompanying remixes by artists Hodge, Nik Void, Hüma Utku as well as other friends and affiliates.
In 2023, he worked with electronic musician and composer Luis Pestana and double-bassist Gregory Vartian-Foss for a special SHAPE+/INTONAL commission and performance.

Always working, Rivet's third album ‘Peck Glamour’, due on Editions MEGO in march 2025, recognizes his dancefloor roots. But his other big release for 2025 will be as a producer and mixer of Sandwell District’s new album ‘End Beginnings’ due the same month.
