Kengchakaj – Uneven Geographies Of Sound

KAREN, LISU, and LAHU - Hilltribe Music from Northern Thailand (Garuda Records, 1992)

The music is raw and unprocessed. The performers are not musicians but rice farmers, survivors of persecution, neglect, and now tourism. Although they are probably the best studied tribal minorities in the world, much of the music of these people has been lost, due to their dislocation, impoverishment, and partial assimilation into Thai culture. The Karen in particular have been praised for many generations by outsiders for their musical talents but today play primarily Western music. 

This cassette offers a sampling of music recorded during a visit to northern Thailand. All of the recordings were made at people’s homes and consequently conversation, children and animals can sometimes be heard in the background. In addition, a few recordings of everyday sounds of village life are included, such as the “Pre-dawn rice hulling” in which the chore of using a wooden tool to pound the day’s rice produces a rhythm for roosters, a pig, and the sounds of the day gradually coming to life. Three instruments are featured: the naw(?), a Lahu gourd mouth organ with five bamboo tubes, which is played by Namise to accompany Nauka in a hillside song under the full moon, and two Lisu instruments: the three stringed toiq, and the jit, a bamboo flute. 

This music is offered as a respectful glimpse into a vanishing way of life graced by simplicity, hard work, and knowledge of making one’s living from the earth.

In this strange year's ending, and to ward off the curse, Serendip Lab offers you a nice end of year gift ! 

Unfortunately for his 10th birthday the festival did not happen this year. Nevermind, a compilation project with all invited artists since 2010 was born and what a good surprise people did answer the call : more than 90 tracks, reflecting the festival / label eclecticism and its evolution. 
From Pierre Bastien's mechanical music, present for the first year, to KK NULL's cyberpunk, whose cassette was our last release, very diverse scenes and styles are represented : psychedelic rock, post punk, improvised, concrete, industrial or rave music, synthwave, IDM, noise, rap, électro… Coming from all around France (Lyon, Marseille, Bordeaux, Rennes, Lille...), Europe (Suede, Denmark, UK, Germany, Netherlands, Italy), or the world (USA, Australia, Indonesia, Japan), pioneers or new comers are mixed, as usual, in a huge and generous party, like a big dadaist mutant family.

So thanks a lot to the hundreds of artists who have participate to the adventure since all these amazing years, to the friends, volunteers, a lot of love to the artists in this compilation, and even more to Patrice Curtillat for the mastering, and Jean Turner for the artwork, and at last a stream of love to you all, hope to meet you soon, best wishes !
