If you are looking for a positive spin on the otherwise bleak year that was 2021 look no further. The Rendezvous is the debut collaboration between 2 stalwarts of the Sydney music scene. Dave Peck & Grant Byrnes played together during the annual Sydney Desert Sessions that ran between 2011-2014 and culminated with a small group of recordings with the rest of the members under the banner of 38 Sports. Their history runs way back to the early 90’s with Dave playing in Sydney bands Mudeye, Othermind, Lime &  Bobsledge while Grant had done stints in Brujo, Magnus, Guilding The Lily and more recently Ivie. 
Recorded in a relaxed atmosphere in Dave’s home studio, The Rendezvous is inspired by classic 70’s hard rock with sprinklings of classic 80’s metal, grunge and stoner rock, the result a blistering set of groove laden rock tracks tied together with Grant’s rich smokey vocals.

What started out as a yearly catch up to share a few laughs and create music together ended up turning into the Sydney Desert Sessions. 38 Sports is a further evolution of this group of fellow musicians who have played together in different original bands together over the last twenty years. With an abundance of new songs being written along the way to each years event it was decided that it was time to share some of these songs. The band members musical heritage is intertwined through many original bands dating back to the early 90's. From Wolfgang & Mudeye to Lime, Magnus, Othermind & Guilding The Lily to Bob Sledge, Christ Art Museum, Lovebucket, Tongues & Lomera. 38 Sports will showcase guest vocalists for each new release which will all be tied back into the the Annual Desert Sessions event. Their first official single release came in June 2013 just prior to Sydney Desert Sessions 2013 and featured guest vocalist Jeremy Davidson from the Snowdroppers. In Novemeber 2013 the band secluded themselves away at a farmhouse in the southern tablelands of NSW to start recording for their debut Mini album with producer and close friend Syd Green. "Deceit" is the first release from those sessions featuring Grant Byrnes on vocals with Scott James Smith & Caroline Miller supplying harmonies.

Hailing from the far north coast of NSW around the hinterland of the Gold Coast the High Hats brings together a group of seasoned musicians whose passion for rock & roll and the blues shows no bounds. Band members are John Carr (guitar/vocal); Tim Rourke (guitar/vocal); John Sutton (bass); Peter Rourke (keyboards/vocal); Bob Symes (harmonica/flute/percussion/vocal); Warren Bell (drums).

The band emerged with a well produced heavy grinding industrial tinged Grunge/Metal sound.

The members became friends through playing shows together in Sydney during early 1996 and before long Guilding The Lily had recorded a 7 track demo and started playing around Sydney. The main song writing force in the band was singer guitarist Grant Byrnes who's warm heartfelt vocals & sublime songs inspired the other members to enrich his already strong stream of ideas. The outcome was an acoustic based folk rock sound with rich twin vocals by Byrnes & Scott James Smith fleshed out with tasteful electric guitar by Geoff Marks, subtle bass riffs by Martin Carr & sublime drums, percussion & lap steel by Syd Green. They released one self titled album during their three year career. This album is the best tracks from their original release coupled with some rare 8 track recordings.

http://rizzrecords.com - Reverend B. Stone formed from the demise of Sydney band "Guilding The Lily" in 1998. Initially Grant Byrnes & Geoff Marks started writing together in the lounge room with their acoustic guitars removing themselves are far as possible from the live music scene. Before long Coby Clarke & Martin Carr joined them and Rev. B. Stone was formed. The 8 songs on this disc were recorded live in the studio one afternoon at Sound level studios in Ultimo, Sydney. Grant's songwriting and singing is warm & genuine with Geoff's outstanding guitar interplay joining perfectly with Grant's. The songs are rounded out by Coby's languid drum & percussion playing and Martin's rhythmic bass lines. The band only played a handful of times in their short career before Grant decided to leave Sydney and venture back up to the far north coast were eventually he formed Odessa. The band recorded another batch of beautiful acoustic tracks before he left that were never officially released.

http://rizzrecords.com - Magnus formed in the winter of 1995 after the demise of Wolfgang. Martin Carr, Geoff Marks & Jules Hernandez decided to pursue a new project and started searching for a new singer to complete the band. While visiting family in northern NSW Martin met Grant Byrnes who was at that stage playing in local Gold Coast band Brujo. Before long Grant made the move to Sydney to take up singing and rhythm guitar with the boys, Magnus was formed. Playing throughout Sydney during 95-97 Magnus was a wicked blend of heavy stoner rock & grunge. Grant & Geoff's guitar interplay with the powerhouse rhythm section of Martin & Jules behind them made for a formidable sound and Grant's voice & songwriting even at this early stage was very accomplished. Although they had over twenty great original tunes only four ever made it to tape. Through the later part of their career they started playing shows with Christ Art Museum and it was through this that the seeds of Guilding the Lily was born.

http://rizzrecords.com - Lime was the brainchild of Catherine Synnerdahl (formerly Gary) & Dave Reynolds. Cath & Dave had been honing their talents for years first as the rhythm section in Wrecking Crew & then in Mother Hubbard. At the end of Mother Hubbard and a brief break they decided to create their own band taking on the songwriting duties and in so doing switching to guitars and vocals. Eventually finding the right rhythm section in Dave Peck (Othermind, Bob Sledge) & Andreas Lanz (Damnation, Christ Art Museum) Lime was born in 1997. They played extensively throughout Sydney between 97-99 and often shared bill's with 'Othermind' & 'Guilding the Lily'. This EP was their only release although a whole albums worth of material was recorded at the time. The first track Puppyphat received good airplay on JJJ Radio at the time of it's release. Cath's lyrical turn of phrase and the wonderful pop tinged guitar rock interplay between Cath & Dave is sublime. Wonderful playing by the rhythm section only adds to the listening pleasure.

Max Smidt has been a part of the Sydney music scene for over twenty years. Starting out as a ferocious hard rockin' drummer through the 90's before picking up the guitar and starting to write his own material and singing out front of Mach 1. Axiomatic is Max's second solo album and is a smooth blend of OZ hard rock, dirty blues & tasty folk/Pop. Max encompasses all the styles he loves on this 10 track set with his gritty rock vocals reminiscent of Stevie Wright. Richly produced by Syd Green (Mantissa, Iota, Guilding The Lily, Christ Art Museum) and with guests Martin Carr, Richard Madden, Brian Cachia, Andrew Webb & Cameron Potts this album is well worth a listen.
