Slow, romantic songs have existed for as long as human beings have expressed our love to one another in melody.

But as a specific art form, the slow jam is rooted in the 1970s. 

Black American artists during this decade expressed the liberal sexual attitudes of the late 1960s with downtempo, intimate R&B music -- and the slow jam was born.

An entire subgenre of R&B developed as the '70s went on, as artists like Marvin Gaye, The Isley Brothers, and Al Green became known for laid-back, groovy melodies and sensual, romantic lyrics. 

By the time the '80s arrived, the first wave of '70s slow jams had evolved into the "Quiet Storm" movement: an even more smoothed-out, intimate subgenre of R&B pioneered by Anita Baker, Smokey Robinson, and others. 

With the late '80s slow jams came with bigger, more bass-heavy electronic production for superstars like Zapp & Roger, Prince, and Keith Sweat.
