It was a highly-anticipated sold-out show, 3500 attendees strong -- we were added to the lineup to open the room for the esteemed Boris Brejcha. While we're a relatively new artist project born in the summer of 2021 with several well-received performances including a main stage slot at Chicago's brand new Arc Music Festival, we've wasted no time in carving out a road for ourselves in the Windy City and beyond.  The energy in this room was simply electric, and it was pure joy to do what we do for everyone there.

Had a really great time rocking this Chicago dance floor.  Thursday night show + sold out event = recipe for a fantastic crowd and vibe.  Awesome response to this set, from the first song to the last.  One of those special ones that you want to make sure and get up soon after because people have told you they want to hear it again.  So here we go!

Thank you to all of you who were there -- it was a pleasure to share in the journey with you all.  And was great to tee things up for Miss Monique in her Chicago debut.  What a nice performance from her, and also a warm-up with depth from IXTO.

The Anjunadeep Edition 160 with James Grant

Their own label, built with no creative boundaries, Radau is a playground where the Berlin quartet remove all limits and expectations and dig deep into the mindset and experimentalism that united them in the first place. 'Frequent Tendencies' sets the scene perfectly. A loosely hewn sliver of emotion constructed just a smidgeon off grid, there's a natural momentum as we're thrust deep inside a vociferous synth hook that rises unapologetically, gradually taking us to a surprise pivot. From here the articulation switches, a whole layer of weight and emphasis on the riff opens up and your crowd won't just elevate, they'll levitate. With plenty more music due on both Radau and beyond, it seems GHEIST's impeccable acceleration over the last two years will continue for a long time to come.

This is my supporting set for Joris Voorn on his Spectrum North American tour -- I had the honor and pleasure to kickoff the musical offerings on the very first event of the tour in Chicago.  

Despite an injury, feeling pretty off-center, and no opportunity to musically prepare for this set, I showed up and just did the best I could.  And you know what?  It was totally worth it.  It felt great -- not perfect by any means, but felt great nonetheless.  What I played was well-received by those in attendance, and most importantly by Joris, who had a nice thing or two to say about things when I was done.  This set will always stand out in my memory for many reasons, and I couldn't be happier to share this set with you all.

Release Promo Review

D-Formation’s Beatfreak Limited continues a great start to 2019 by welcoming Alexander Alar to the label for his debut EP. Based in Bali, Indonesia, Alexander started fresh with his new alias less than a year ago and has already notched releases on Dear Deer, Highways Records and Songspire Records. Now debuting on Beatfreak’s Limited division he presents the much anticipated ‘Budapest / Buenos Aires’ EP.

Both cities are known for their rich history in progressive music and Alexander has done a fine job paying homage to them beginning with ‘Budapest’. A slick, modern piece of melodic techno with an emphasis on warm grooves and crunchy designs. It’s this contrast, coupled with chugging rhythms and a stellar complement of effects which keep the dramatic appeal high throughout. A twisted lead synth gets teased sparingly, and rightly so as it adds just the right amount of cosmic appeal without overshadowing the the fluid framework below.

The companion piece ‘Buenos Aires’ leans a touch closer to pure progressive territory yet still sits comfortably in a cross genre realm. Finely tuned drums instantly grab your attention along with a rippling low end and spastic synth designs. A smart tonal theme fades to prominence during the break, undergoing some clever and mind bending modulation before reaching a tasteful peak and unleashing the groove for a driving finale. It rounds out what are two spectacular tracks from Alexander who is certainly an artist to keep a close eye on as 2019 unfolds.

I was asked to asked to warm-up the room for Jeremy Olander's Vivrant showcase at Sound-Bar in Chicago, and I was happy to do so.  Jeremy is an artist who's work I've now been a longtime fan of, and it's been pretty awesome seeing his star rise over all these years.  On this special night, I set the tone for the first 2.5 hours, and it truly felt like one of those few-and-far-between events where everything was fully cohesive from start to finish.  Killer vibes all night, and palpable electric energy in the air.  I wish they all could be like this every time.

Anyway, I'm really happy to share this set with all of you, as I know I'm overdue on posting a fresh mix...  And that being said, this is a pretty damn good one to be putting up.  It's stacked with a mixture of super fresh cuts, some tried and true selections with staying power, and I peppered in some fine selections from the Vested Recordings label catalog, some of which are forthcoming releases and got some great reactions from all of you in attendance.

Hey everyone, this week I have something very special for you.  It’s a Deep Dish set from Pacha Ibiza last year, where Dubfire and I played for the 20th anniversary of Deep Dish at Pacha.  The night was hosted by Hot Since 82’s Labyrinth residency and we had an amazing time.  If you don’t know, we are reuniting this month for both weekends of Coachella and a special open to close set at Sound in Los Angeles.  I hope to see you there. I've had the pleasure of playing with Jody in CHI quite a bit over the years, but I don't think I've ever seen him play a set quite like this one.  He came to play, and frankly, so did I.  Warming up the main room for Jody's 3 Hour journey in Dolby Atmos was a privilege, and the night was pretty stellar from start to finish.  Dive in and see what you missed, or replay this portion of it to enjoy again.  I even got a "That was lovely, mate" comment from Jody on this set, so it was nice to know he was feeling it too.  :)

It was truly a pleasure to share the lineup with the mighty Dosem.  Most impressively, he has such a dynamic range in his sounds and productions, spanning from deep to house to tech to progressive, this guy can really do it all.  It felt really great for me to be able to cover a bit of ground myself, continue building the room and get some great reactions on so many of these selections I played (including a couple of Vested Recordings tracks).  We mic'd the room that night too, for added bonus, and you can hear some parts where people were really connecting with what was being played.

For the past 2 decades, RJ Pickens has been a leader in building and growing Chicago’s melodic-driven electronic music scene. With nearly 25 years of DJ experience and tirelessly pursuing the perfect mix of deep, progressive, techno, and house sounds.  He rocks venues ranging from intimate to huge, and can go from being the headliner himself to being the supporting act of choice for countless global headliners on the best club and festival events the Windy City has to offer.  RJ is also a principal collaborator in a recently-launched and acclaimed music act called Portals & Parachutes, taking first flight in post-pandemic 2021.  RJ’s record label and music event banner — VESTED — has become synonymous with top-tier progressive electronic sounds.
