On the lines of Holi songs, the poems of Kumaon composed Holio and connected it with social consciousness and movement is a wonderful and admirable work.

Kumauni people as it signifies not only the victory of good over evil but also end of the winter season and the start of the new sowing season which holds great importance for this agricultural community of the North Indian Himalayas. It is an amalgamation of the cultural traditions of North India and the local traditions of Kumaon.

The uniqueness of the Kumaoni Holi lies in its being a musical affair, whatever its form, be it the Baithki Holi, the Khari Holi and the Mahila Holi all of which start from Basant Panchmi. This results in the festivities of Holi lasting for almost two months in Kumaon.[1] The Baithki Holi and Khari Holi are unique in that the songs on which they are based have a combination of melody, fun, and spiritualism. These songs are essentially based on classical ragas. Baithki Holi is also known as Nirvan Ki Holi or Holi of Salvation.

Kumauni Holi has characteristics which are very different from Holi celebrations anywhere in the country.

उत्तराखंड के कुमाऊं मंडल में हर साल चैत्र में मायके पक्ष से पिता या भाई अपनी बेटी/बहन के लिए भिटौली लेकर उसके ससुराल जाता है। पहाड़ी अंचल में आज भी महिला को चैत में भिटौली दी जाती है।
सदियों से चली आ रही भिटौली परंपरा का महिलाओं को बेसब्री से इंतजार है। पहाड़ की महिलाओं को समर्पित यह परंपरा महिला के मायके से जुड़ी भावनाओं और संवेदनाओं को बयां करती है। हालांकि पहाड़ की बदलते स्वरूप, दूरसंचार की उपलब्धता, आवागमन की बढ़ी सुविधाओं के बाद यह परंपरा कम होती जा रही है, लेकिन प्रदेश के दोनों मंडलों के पहाड़ी क्षेत्रों में यह परंपरा पुराने रूप में जीवित है।
 हालांकि वर्तमान समय में दूरसंचार माध्यमों और परिवहन क्षेत्र में उपलब्ध सुविधाओं की बदौलत दूरियां सिमट चुकी हैं। लेकिन, विवाहिता के दिल में मायके के प्रति संवेदनाएं और भावनाएं शायद ही बदल पाएंगी। यही वजह है कि सदियों से चल रही परम्पराएं आज भी कायम हैं। ऐसी ही एक परंपरा है भिटोली। 
ग्रामीण क्षेत्रों में अभी भिटौली सिर्फ रिवाज ही नहीं, बल्कि प्रत्येक विवाहिता के लिए अपने मायके से जुड़ी यादों को समेटकर रखने का वार्षिक आयोजन है। वर्तमान में लोकपर्वों जीवंत बनाए रखना चुनौती है। शहरों में जो संस्थाएं यह प्रयास कर कर रही है, वह सराहनीय है।
भिटौली का शाब्दिक अर्थ है भेंट (मुलाकात) करना। विवाहित लड़की के मायके वाले (भाई, माता-पिता या अन्य परिजन) चैत के महीने में उसके ससुराल जाकर विवाहिता से मुलाकात करते हैं। वह लड़की के लिए घर में बने व्यंजन जैसे खजूर, आटे, दूध, घी, चीनी का मिश्रण, खीर, मिठाई, फल व वस्त्र आदि लेकर जाते हैं। शादी के बाद पहली भिटौली लड़की को बैसाख महीने में दी जाती है। उसके पश्चात हर वर्ष चैत में दी जाती है। 
उत्तराखंड की विषम भौगोलिक परिस्थितियों, पुराने समय में संसाधनों की कमी, व्यस्त जीवन शैली के कारण विवाहित महिला को सालों तक अपने मायके जाने का मौका नहीं मिल पाता था। ऐसे में चैत्र में मनाई जाने वाली भिटौली के जरिए भाई अपनी विवाहित बहन के ससुराल जाकर उससे भेंट करता था।

यह भावनात्मक परम्परा है। लड़की चाहे कितने ही सम्पन्न परिवार में ब्याही गई हो, उसे मायके से आने वाली भिटौली का बेसब्री से इन्तजार रहता है। यह प्रथा इसलिए भी शुरू हुई कि पहले आवागमन के साधन नहीं थे। न ही लड़की को मायके जाने की छूट मिलती थी। लड़की किसी निकट संबंधी के शादी ब्याह या दुख-बीमारी में ही ससुराल से मायके आ पाती थी। इसलिए शादीशुदा लड़की से कम से कम साल में एक बार मिलने और उसको भेंट देने के प्रयोजन से ही त्यौहार बनाया गया।
उपहार स्वरूप पकवान लेकर उसके ससुराल पहुंचता था। भाई बहन के इस अटूट प्रेम, मिलन को ही भिटौली कहा जाता है। सदियों पुरानी यह परंपरा निभाई जाती है।

Kumauni Bhitooli Parv भिटौली उत्सव

मानव पर्यावरण के सानिध्य में रहकर ही प्रगति कर सकता है। वर्तमान में विश्व के सभी देश पर्यावरण संरक्षण एवं विकास की बात कर रहे हैं क्योंकि स्वयं मानव ने अपनी भौतिक समृद्धि के लिए वर्षों से प्रकृति का दोहन करने में कोई कसर नहीं छोड़ी है ।आज मानव भौतिक उन्नति व विकास के लिए जिस प्राकृतिक संपदा को हानि पहुंचा रहे हैं वही पर्यावरण प्रदूषण के रूप में हमारे अस्तित्व के लिए खतरा बन चुके हैं। प्रकृति का ह्रास करके जिस विकास की हम बात कर रहे हैं वह वायु, मृदा, जल,व ध्वनि प्रदूषण, अम्लीय वर्षा, भूकंप ,बाढ़ , भूस्खलन के रूप में मानव समाज के लिए चिंता का विषय बने हुए हैं । एक लंबे समय तक प्राकृतिक दोहन से विकास में लिप्त व पर्यावरण चेतना से अनभिज्ञ सुसुप्त मानव अब धीरे-धीरे जागने लगा है।
वस्तुत: प्रकृति के सानिध्य में रहकर विकास करने की धारणा एक महत्वपूर्ण विचार है। प्रकृति व विकास के बीच सामंजस्य होने से मानव को लाभ ही होता है और वह अनावश्यक चिंताओं व समस्याओं से परे रहता है। प्रकृति का दोहन आवश्यकताओं की पूर्ति हेतु किया जाना चाहिए न कि अपनी विलासिता व अघिक धनार्जन  की पूर्ति के लिए ।
प्रकृति का सानिध्य व संरक्षण कुमाउनी  संस्कृति की मूल विशेषता है। हमारे लोकपर्व  एवम् लोक गीत  प्रकृति को सिंचित व संरक्षित करने के कई विधियों  वह प्रकृति प्रेम से भरे हैं।

सुन्दर दिखना मनुष्य की नियति में सम्मिलित है। इस हेतु वस्त्रों व
भूषणों के साथ बालों को सवॉरना भी श्रृंगार की श्रेणी में आता है। केश
श्रृगार का महत्वपूर्ण स्थान  है  प्रत्येक समाज के लोग बालों को विभिन्न फूलों,
पतियों, धागों व अन्य वस्तुओं से बने साज-श्रृंगार की सामग्री से सुसज्जित
करते हैं। केशों को सदा से ही सौन्दर्य का प्रतीक माना जाता रहा है। अतः

भिटौली परंपरा से संबन्धित कई गीत, लोक कथाएँ व दंत कथाएँ कुमायूं क्षेत्र में प्रचलित हैं जिनमें कहीं हर्ष है तो कहीं  पर  उदासी । इन गीतों और कथाओं में किसी  बहन के  भाई न होने की ब्यथा है तो कहीं दुखी मन की पीड़ा और  पुरानी  स्मृतियां,  और कहीं -कहीं भिटौली की प्रतीक्षा, खुशी व  आनंद आदि की मार्मिक अभिव्यजना भी  है । हर बार चैत्र मास आने पर इन स्मृतियों की याद बार बार आने की अभिव्यक्ति भी इन गीतों  में है ।

Once Lord Shiva got absorbed in his austerity, many years passed and the seasons kept changing, but Lord Shiva's sleep did not break due to which Mother Parvati and Nandi etc. started experiencing dullness in Lord Kailash, then Goddess Parvati ji Bhole Nath ji took a unique way to break the sleepiness. As the yellow flowers of Foli began to bloom in Kailash.

Mata Parvati gave all the Shiva Ganas wearing Pitambari jama made with flowers of Pauoli and gave them the appearance of small children and then asked all the Shiva people to choose such fragrant flowers from the flowers of the deities whose fragrance spreads throughout Kailash.

In obedience to Mata Parvati, everyone did the same and first offered flowers to the shrine of Lord Shiva, which was called "Phulaldei".

wishes Are contained within the festivals. Holi is a major festival of Kumaon. The tradition of celebrating Holi and singing has been in Kumaon since very ancient times. What was its form in the beginning, it is difficult to say, but after turning the pages of history, its origin seems to be from the reign of a Chand_Kings.
