Had the privilage to play in the National Concert Hall in October 2022. The gig meant a lot to me on loads of levels. To play in such a setting, to a room of dedicated electronic musics fans who were there to listen, gave me such a sense of belief. Far too often, the only avenue that Irish artists can follow to find that sort of recognition is to emigrate and express themselves in other places. To be able to do it in my hometown was really moving!

I've also been involved in a campaign called Give Us the Night for the past 5 years. We've been trying to improve the conditions for late night cultural spaces with a particular emphasis on dancefloors. We've been working hard to open up National Cultural Institutions for these type of alternative cultural events. So to see people dancing in the NCH til 3am was a pure buzz. Here's the recording of the music from the night, hope you enjoy.

This latest single from the Dublin-based musician finds itself in radically different circumstances to its 2020 predecessor Orainn 02. Needless to say, R.Kitt has spent much of the time in-between embracing his beloved dancefloor again both as spectator and musical provider. These experiences have confounded our subject, whilst relieved at dancing’s return, also finds its current iteration Kinda Strange. In response, he delivers his most potent statement to date on the third installment for his label.

Fast Breeze answers the question “what if Tony De Vit was a Café del Mar resident?”; galloping along a pumping hard house core smothered in a warm balearic intimacy that drops in wistful ecstatic glee throughout its blissful duration. Feeling Kinda Strange is a shade moodier, where a nagging feeling haunts this nocturnal techno roller. Punchy arpeggios signal the intent, before emerging into daylight by embracing a dew-glowed ambience that offers a true-to-form optimism. Club music, but brazenly honest; we wouldn’t have R.Kitt any other way."

During the pandemic, I started cycling and listening to music through a bluetooth speaker strapped to my handlebars. I made a mix that I listened to countless times and I shared it here. 4 years later, I'm still doing this several times a week. I've made dozens of mixes, I've mix tested demos, I've gone through new purchases on Bandcamp ahead of gigs. It's been one of my main outlets for listening to music generally.

I've finally followed up to that first mix with Volume Two here. I think this is a good mix to exercise to, to go for a cycle or a run, or maybe a late night drive. It's also good for a dance. Hope you enjoy it :)

Orainn is a new label set up by R.Kitt. Over the coming months, the label will serve as an outlet to release much of the productions that have been highlights of R.Kitt's live show from 2019 and more recently. Orainn means "on us" in Irish. The name references how emotion is described in Irish language. A person doesn't say that they are feeling something in Irish but rather they say that that feeling is on them. This description of emotion seems to be a far more accurately transient way to view emotion than the rather static English alternative. Music is fundamentally an emotional form of communication, and one of the most profound places where that musical emotional experience can be shared is on the dancefloor. Joined together by rhythm and movement, the strength of the emotional experiences of those moments are not generated by one of us, but by the gathered power of all of us. That feeling is not just on you or on me, but it is on us, Orainn.

Orainn 02 is the second release on R.Kitt’s imprint. After initially setting up the label to release previous material featuring in live sets from festivals and club gigs last year, this release consists of brand new tracks all put together after the world fell apart. In R.Kitt’s words

“I felt like a lot of that old music was too intrinsically linked to a time and setting that doesn’t feel in any way relevant anymore. The environment of spaces like dance clubs or big open festival fields full of thousands of people seems so far away and the horizon isn’t even in sight, and it feels weird to try and understand or comprehend music that was made for those settings in a meaningful emotional way right now. Instead, this release tries to draw out some of the feelings I’ve been experiencing since everything changed.”

Volatile emotion is at the core of each of the 4 tracks on this EP. The opener, Dance Zoned, is a naïvely hopeful, rollercoaster paced, breaks infused piece that tries to distil meditative moments of elation found during this time. Due To reflects a more post-apocalyptic vision, robotic and desolate but buoyed by melodic bursts that serve to break through the cold atmosphere with injections of warmth. It’s Leaving Me feels like it is both tragically sad yet peacefully accepting, reflecting on loss, growth and change. The EP is rounded out by Not That Way, a foot down, all speed, no chance of stopping kind of tune.

These are not just tunes for the club space, which obviously doesn’t exist at the moment in anyway that we were previously familiar with. But the music is intended to summon the same kind of emotional release that we experienced in those spaces, in whatever environment you want, until we return.

Orainn 02 Clips

Cycling has been the main outlet through which I listen to music loudly these days. With the clubs closed, I've been cycling through the empty Dublin City streets and across the fields of the Phoenix Park, late into the night, and just blasting music from my bluetooth speaker tied to my handlebars. It's been genuinely emotional and cathartic. I'd been struggling to make a mix that seemed coherent, and I think it was because there was no real coherence to everyday emotional experience these days with everything delineated by the fecking pandemic. But focusing on how I feel when I'm cycling and listening to music gave me a way to put together something that seemed to make sense, so very happy to share this mix. Get a small speaker, tie it to your bike, get out there and release it x
