-Commentary-
This track has kind of gone through the wringer of stages. My first few "finished" versions of this were just not cohesive and put together. I'm pretty satisfied with how this is now composition wise though. The intro is a little fugue between a harpsichord, trumpet, and bass synth. The main subject is using the trumpet intro from Over Saturated but with some embellishments and different rhythms. The dotted rhythm in the subject persists though out the entire piece which helped with keeping it together structurally. I tried to keep it as fugue-y as possible until the final section. Then I move to something kinda Mozarty(?) with the piano. The big major break is capped off a little short and brought down to a more melancholy tone. I doubt Calder is the kind of person who'd let himself reminisce in old memories for too long, so I thought that'd be a nice decision, along with the "spooky" little ending echo.

-Commentary-
Im really proud of this one from the production and composition side. Gm-F# is one of my favorite harmonic moves and I make lots of use of it here for the beginning ethereal waltz vibe. It also has a little echo in the back of it that somehow makes its own counter melody with the material. The waltz to 6/8 march shift is a fucking classic and I couldn't resist. That part is suppose to represent a sort of final run to save the day, like "Giving Kushinada a Ride" from the Okami OST. With the horn + viola combo carrying the heroic melody until the track starts to fall apart. The entire ending section is a reference to Shostakovich String Quartet 8 Fourth Movement. Shosh 8 is a really heavy piece, and I thought what better to end this breakdown track than with a piece full of angst, despair, and loss.

-Commentary-
Terezi’s Alterniabound theme has been calling out to me to make a fugue out of it for a Long time, so I instantly had a good idea of what I wanted to do once we got the fighting game theme. Fugues being so busy lend themselves really well to the chaotic and powerful vibes of fighting game music. This isn’t the first time I’ve tried to superimpose a fugue into electronic music but this is my best go yet I think. I made what would normally be a transitional sequence the A section to match the form of more Electronic music, but ended up slipping all the proper voice entrances into less notable sections, to get right  to the juicy stuff.  I think normally when baroque textures get into other genres it's normally in ostinato and solely accompanimental, so I wanted to make a point of having the free counterpoint writing be front and center. During the free counterpoint I use a 4 on the floor vibe to keep the energy up but still center the more busy melodic material; and I tried to make that the climax. Unfortunately I caved and gave the Second A a crazy virtuosic sounding squarewave solo. Whichever is more exciting is up for debate, probably. The ending was a little rushed but the picardy third is too classic to resist sometimes. Overall I’m really proud of how this turned out, despite rushing the latter half of this out the day before the con :P

My 2nd track for SAHcon's annual album, this year a fighting game OST! This track was for a character select screen.

commentary:
the title isnt any specific reference, but i wanted something along the lines of who am i expectin' or thats what im expectin' and i just shoved the class in so its like. classpect. class aspect. yknow?
i was listening to the tony hawk pro skater 3 soundtrack while at work yesterday and just went "oh i love these more down low tracks that arent like heavy rock" and thought, hey that'd be a dope kinda thing while looking at a character select menu.
also thought about the MVC2 character select theme but it ended up being not too much like it lmao
got that nice baseline, added a bit of auto wah to it, and mostly left it as the loop bc thats what a bunch of them rap tracks in thps3 are like
i have NEVER done anything with a wah guitar before. i think its a bit messy, but i both wasnt sure how to do it and didnt have much time before the deadline lmao? deadline is in a few hours as i write this and i started the track maybe 16 hours ago
it felt super empty without having a rap section in there
if i could have, i would have found someone to rap SOMETHING over the top and get some dj ass scratches in, but again deadlines. in the end i just whipped out the trusty speak & spell samples and like. counted with it. 
in the back part i got it to spell out every aspect, isnt that neat?
i wanted to do more with troll themes, but i just kinda shoved a rex duodecim angelus in there by the start and end, while the middle gets showtime, aggrieve, beatdown and dissension for the kids.
the horns were the last moment thing i added, and literally add like 15 minutes onto the load time of the session?? its rough out here in pro tools land. i just wanted something to fill space because it felt empty without it, ESPECIALLY the intro.
oh yeah theres also an old vinyl sound going in the background bc there was a texture in those thps3 tracks which was missing and this seemed to give it that? it also helped with the spindown at the end lol
oh also post deadline i added an organ with some homestuck anthem or whatever

commentary:

the characters i feel i woulda been the best at got taken like immediately
so i took the chance to do something ive wanted to for a while, emulate some kinda yoko shimomura style stuff
yoko shimomura's work has this powerful, but beautiful sounding piano, and since i'm doing stuff for John this is a good time for piano
im borrowing bits from showtime, doctor, sburban something, and harlequin in places
there was an electric guitar i had which i felt happy with in the intro but Pro Tools crashed and my backup lost a bunch of changes i had made to it i couldnt recover, so it had to say goodbye :(
i wanted to involve more stuff with solo strings but i didnt want to push it too far into rose territory. i've also been fucking around with breakbeats and stuff lately so ive had to keep that out of here too lol (edit: i didnt keep it out i had to play with them)
i got stuck with this track a lot and i feel like you can probably hear it by the way its kinda segmented around where i started playing with motifs and sections from other john-related songs but i'd like to think it works out.
also endings are HARD sometimes dude.

﻿A battle theme featuring a bunch of Dirk-centric themes for this fighting games-inspired album, I've always loved Now I'm a Villain from Beyond Canon and it was the perfect time for me to do something using bits from this song!
I didn't have that many references or inspirations making this track, the guitars make it somewhat Daisuke Ishiwatari sounding I suppose but honestly the title I came up with afterwards is the most Guilty Gear inspired thing here actually haha. The middle section was more inspired by some of the more industrial tracks from Tekken games but I feel like it ended up sounding more like something between Mortal Kombat and Persona 2.
Except for the guitars, all instruments are either from the Roland Cloud JV-1080 plugin or loops from Distorted Reality, Methods of Mayhem and Dave's beat machine.

-Commentary-
This is my first piece back after getting medicated and getting back on my feet from a bad depressive episode. There's a few firsts in here for me and I'm really proud of how it turned out. The piece prominently features the harpsichord until its overtaken by the guitar as the piece progresses. This represents the slow take over of Turrin themself, as they give into the influence of Entropy, A major player in Shitshow. The fade out also plays into this as it leave the story unfinished, ending with a meandering guitar solo. The metric modulations in the transitions of this piece felt like they threw me a curve ball in the composition process. With the first one i was truly "just feeling it bro" and have to figure out how to contextualize it in the proceeding section. The second transition to the coda was a lot more deliberate, intending to slowly guide your mind out of the 6/16 and back into 4 with various rhythmic claves.

-Commentary-
As soon as I was given the reference tracks for this, I knew exactly which direction I needed to go in: Reminiscent of 80's 90's hip-hop, heavy as fuck drums, and aesthetic compression and glitching. This is my first go at making a piece with flipped samples and I think they both came out very interesting. The microrhythms in the first first main sample initially made me frustrated until I paired it with the drums. They way it interlocked brought an entire new feeling and made me "see the light" per se on sampling. As the title may imply, Desila has borderline personality disorder. She gets hurt by many people she loves, taken advantage of by both a partner and a God. Said god, named Themis, gave her a furturesight power, which showed her all the possible ways her friends could abandon her. Knowing this, the B section of this piece represents the ferocity and chaotic feeling of a split. The trumpet takes over the guitar as Desila loses control of herself and lets her emotions loose
