I had an inspiring experience working at Capilano University in Vancouver several hears ago, where the vocal director, Réjean Marois, wrote a vocal choir (12 voices, piano, guitar, bass, drums) of my song cycle Winter Morning Walks, originally recorded by Dawn Upshaw and the Australian Chamber Orchestra on my album the same title. The song cycle sets nine wonderful poems by Ted Kooser taken from his book, Winter Morning Walks: 100 Postcards to Jim Harrison.
I found Réjean’s arrangement to be masterful, and his students gave such an inspired performance. Réjean and I are now thrilled to be able to share this music with performing groups. In addition to the score and parts in PDF format, you will also be able to stream a discussion with Réjean and me, as well as hearing the performance the students gave at Capilano University on my visit. Those forces that fight anything from the main stream that keeps you on the surface; anything that makes you think less significance is more enjoyable.

"Waiting..." is an excellent accessible piece for developing concert band (grade 2.5 - 3) with level appropriate instrumentation, ranges and rhythms.The work starts with a simple melody over a clock-ticking effect and gradually progresses toward a more intense section, to end with  a cozy, intimate feel.  A moving, emotional moment for your concert band!

Waiting

« À St-Malo, beau port de mer » is a popular French traditional song that is often used also as square dance repertoire. 
Two themes are used in this piece: the song itself at letter A, and, at letter C, a simplified jig that is often associated to the song in square dance sets. Enjoy!

On January 9, 2013, Ross Taggart left us. Equally the master of both piano and tenor saxophone, Ross was one of Vancouver’s finest and most beloved musicians, admired not only for his superior musicianship but for his humour and generosity of spirit.
Ross was a faculty member in the Jazz Studies Department at Capilano 
University from 1988.

Sweet Time Suite, Part 1: Opening

The piece was written between 2017 and Spring of 2019. It was recorded at the Pyatt Hall in Vancouver on June 15, 2019 with AK Coope, Christopher Lee, Sidney Tetarenko on clarinets and Julie Begg on bass clarinet. Sound technician, mix and edition by Lawrence Wu.
Corsi E Ricorsi was inspired by the concept "corsi e ricorsi" (cycles and counter cycles) that came in the early 18th century from Giambattista Vico in Naples. His concept is often seen as espousing a cyclical philosophy of history where human history is created by man...
