The Brvtalist is pleased to premiere a new track from Iris Forest. "Rise Up" comes off the new EP, 3:40, forthcoming on Berlin's WAAGE Records. The album is a short and clear description of the events taking place in Ukraine starting with the relative beginning - 24.02.2022 - the dark, menacing, spooky start, illustrating people's mood after the first russian bombs caused explosions in some Ukrainian cities. The whole release is a powerful journey through different moods, feelings and atmospheres creating an immersive experience through sound. Below we have included the artist's statement on the release and today we premiere the 4th track, "Rise Up".

"This experimental electronic EP of mine had been made after the beginning of a vicious, blood-shedding russian full-scale invasion to my homeland - Ukraine, inspired by both personal and collective national pain caused due to destruction, loss and multiple crimes committed by russia against my people. After fleeing from the city of Kharkiv to Germany in March, I got deeply focused on creating something, which would somewhat depict in a music form the tragic, horrendous things taking place in my motherland. Just as any other Ukrainian, deeply petrified and simultaneously outraged due to the genocide against our nation, I find it my greatest responsibility as an artist to draw people's attention to ferocities and war crimes that keep being committed by those savage perpetrators."

Recently, the New York Association of Black Journalists chose Williams as the namesake of their annual Excellence in Podcast/Radio Program Award, in honor of her incredible career as someone who has set the standard for excellence in media. Known as a "hip hop whisperer," Dyana has a unique talent for helping celebrities from all walks of life present their best selves to the world.

In a conversation with The Sidebar's MICHAEL W. RAY, he sits down with Williams to discuss her journey, her impact on the industry, and her ongoing mission to elevate Black music and culture.

I’m not going to dissect the instrumentals on this track.

There’s no need to, they are lush, polished, precise, and everything needed to support the vocals.

The vocals are what interests me.

They are sensational, and very carefully crafted

The song appears to be 100% harmony between Renee and Mister Co, but it’s not. More about that later.

You could almost say that there is no melody to this.

The two vocalists spend most of their time circling their harmonies around arpeggios, and they really do that well, better than well actually.

This fascinated me so much that I needed a couple of run throughs to find the melody and the solo vocals.

They are there, but unlike many songs which live in harmony, the solo breaks are not providing contrasting views, the views are in harmony as much as the music is in harmony.

You hear what I did there!

As promised this is definitely a free-flowing soulful groove, and an enticing track from their EP.

Korean-Canadian multi-instrumentalist Luna Li reworks her second album, ‘When a Thought Grows Wings,’ for this deluxe edition, which features collaborators Hope Tala, Mei Semones, MAVI, HOMESHAKE and more. In this exclusive commentary, Luna talks about the making of key tracks from the album and reflects on key moments from her journey as an artist, such as the pivotal “2615.” Here, she explains how she began posting videos of her jams, looping every instrument herself, during the pandemic, noting how this time period was when she “was needing desperately to cling on to music, creativity and positivity to keep me sane.” Of the track, “Bon Voyage,” Luna discusses how the song explores questions of power of destiny: “How much autonomy and control do we really have in our lives?” Elsewhere, Luna reflects on her collaboration with Hope Tala (“I Imagine”), as well as celebrates how “Silver and Rain” and “You Didn’t Have to Go” are “close to her heart,” inspired by her native Toronto.
