“From Wharf Rats to Lords of the Docks”. Our first radio documentary explores Bridges' early life, the creation of the ILWU, his campaigns for social justice, and the five trials and hearings that he endured during his quest for citizenship. It includes interviews with union members, his lawyers, and personal friends. Rare union and folk songs, are also woven into the story. Voices include Ed Asner and Haskell Wexler. The documentary was distributed by PRI (Public Radio International) and it aired across the country on over 75 public radio stations on Labor Day 2000, as well as in Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. This project was funded by a major grant from the California Council for the Humanities.

Le processus nécessitait ici une plus grande licence artistique que pour la description du paysage sonore d’un habitat terrestre. Tous les éléments ont été assemblés dans mon studio afin de créer une impression de cohésion que l’on retrouve rarement dans les biomes marins actuels, mais qui suggère une forme idéalisée de la richesse de la vie dans ces écosystèmes. »

“With the exception of coral reefs, and coastal mangrove swamps, the ocean is not very densely populated with vocal organisms located in one area. The process here required a bit more artistic license than is usually involved when representing the soundscapes of a terrestrial habitat. All of the elements were mixed together in my studio to convey a sense of cohesion that rarely exists in actual marine biomes, but which implies an ideal of their rich existence of life.”

Aunt Tamara's Egg Salad Recipe

This is approximately half of the duration of a post-sunset frog chorus, recorded on the East shore of Mississippi Lake in Henry Coe State Park in California. This is the second half of the entire performance; the half which doesn't include the jet overflight.

One nearby frog in the left surround channel is notably louder than the rest who are along the lakeshore. But he takes a break about 4:30 minutes into the clip. With headphones turned-up, you might hear muted voices of backpackers on the West shore.

This recording was amplified 17dB form the original recording level. This Lo/Ro stereo mixdown was recorded originally in 6-channels with surround and height microphones (suitable as a Dolby Atmos bed). Front mics are Sennheiser MKH-8040 in an ORTF array, surrounds are Sennheiser MKH-8020 omnis, and the 12' high height mic is the Audio Technica BP4024 single-point stereo, pointed up.
