When the grid goes dark and the End Times finally come what will it sound like? 

The 6 radioactively-charged contributors to this latest installment of the ROAM audiozine, who were hand-selected by curator Laura Relyea of Vouched Books, each tackle this question in a different way by harnessing the twin powers of Sound and the Written Word. 

ROAM in the Ruins is a genetically mutated take on the traditional literary reading or audiobook. Part post-apocalyptic radio drama and part avant garde audio experiment, these aural dispatches from imaginary disaster zones explore what life might sound like during the apocalypse and how humanity might reconstitute civilization in the wake of such a catastrophe. 

Those familiar with Orson Welles’s War of the Worlds broadcast or Cormac McCarthy’s The Road will know exactly what we’re going for. 

ROAM in the Ruins premiered as a live broadcast + communal listening experience at The Big House on Ponce on Day Zero, i.e. Sunday, November 23, 2014.

The latest in Ray Ban’s Never Hide Films series, "Color Guard" tells the story of a young girl (Clover Nee) who requests that her babysitting Uncle Jamie (Jamie Granato) tell her a bedtime story. Jamie’s improvised tale centers around a group of color-blind and joyless adults, including Clover’s father Roland (Scovel), who attend “Guru Tiki Royal’s Color Camp For Adults” in efforts to be cured of their ailments and add color to their world.

With the sixth installment of ROAM for the Holidaze, we asked our contributing artists to send an aural holiday greeting card; a collage that sonically summed up 2015. We wanted to hear harvested sounds married to found elements, captured melodies and original compositions. The 50 minute audio time capsule you hear now is signed, sealed and delivered to your ears on this, the first day of 2016. Happy ROAM year!

ROAM For The Holidaze 6: A Greeting Card for your Eardrums

Happy Nearly New Year, ROAMers!

As the new year approaches we come closer to the threshold that divides us from Then and Now. It is a time where we look back to preserve just as we look forward to divest.   

The two-faced Janus looks both forward and backward, blessed with a double-vision that allows for seeing into the future and the past at the same time. Here at ROAM, we believe that sound recording and manipulation allow sound scientists to create new hybrid soundforms that are capable of replicating the Janus’s peculiar visual enhancement but for the ears instead of the eyes.

In this seventh installment of our ROAM for the Holidaze compilation we unveil the fruits of some of the greatest examples of this type of soundform cultivation. Listening both forward and backward as present memories give way to future nostalgias, our contributors share intimate moments, fantasies, nightmares, and the joys of making a racket.
