COOL JAZZ TRIO “TAKE 8”
The name and repertoire of this trio take us back to a more fertile period in jazz history and,
at the same time, are indicative of a specific aesthetic direction, involving a fundamental
belief in a world which may now be out of fashion, but which is full of truth and beauty,
emotion and poetry. “Cool” here stands for intimate and relaxed, fresh and colloquial, rather
than an aseptic reference to the kinds of atmosphere created by Lennie Tristano or Gil Evans
with Miles Davis. These are qualities that fewer and fewer musicians seem to possess, in Italy
or abroad. You have to keep up with the times – they say – and the present time is one of
globalization, of disparate influences from all over the place, of blending as much as possible.
But fortunately there are a few ‘unsung heroes’ or ‘keepers of the flame’ to remind us that great
music has to be wary of trends and fashion if it is to survive and flourish. What about creativity
and improvisation? Generations of musicians have proved that getting to grips with the
standards, building new melodic lines over their harmonic structure, is the hardest test, the
one that shows the audience and other musicians what you are made of, what technical level
you have achieved, what narrative drive you are able to impart to your solos. Not to mention
the two fundamental elements of jazz language, swing and blues feeling, which we so rarely
find in contemporary offerings. I was talking about this recently with Franco D’Andrea, a
musician of consummate skill and experience, who confirmed how reluctant (or if you prefer,
inadequate) young jazz players are to tackle these basic issues. Well, for the three musicians
playing together on this CD, these things have always been a part of their artistic creed, not
as a matter of revivalism or cultural acquiescence but from a need to be obedient to an inner
philosophy, an urge that can be fully expressed only in this way.
MORENO D’ONOFRIO is a guitarist who shuns effect, both good and bad, who has reappropriated
one of the clearest and purest possible sounds and plays with outstanding technique,
lucid phrasing and deep honesty of purpose. To cut a long story short, he has found
an original voice, albeit drawing inspiration from masters as diverse as Jim Hall and the
excellent but underrated Ed Bickert, travelling here and there through the history of the
six-stringed instrument which he knows so well. From these origins derives Moreno’s natural
leaning towards the duo or trio formations, environments which allow little or no room for
bluff (In particular, I would mention his highly stimulating association with the pianist and
harmonica player Luigi Ferrara). CLAUDIO CHIARA made a profound impression on me
a few years ago when I heard him play live at a concert in memory of Charlie Parker, which
inspired him to produce an outstanding performance. His saxophone seems to have gained
in personality and presence, learning lessons from Bird, obviously, but also from Phil Woods,
Bud Shank, Hal McKusick and even some tenor saxophonists such as Zoot Sims and our
unforgettable Italian Gianni Basso. We are dealing here with a ‘story teller’ who structures
his choruses in lengthy sequences which capture one’s attention from the very first notes.
Confirmation of this is provided by the excellent “Two For The Road”, a record on which he
performs alongside the great little singer and pianist Patti Wicks. Finally, what more can be
said about LUCIANO MILANESE, one of the most gifted double-bass players in the history
of Italian jazz music? He is synonymous with swing, solidity and good taste, and has a large
number of recordings and joint ventures to his credit.
The choice of pieces on this CD is splendid, in keeping with the very high standard of the
recording, which rightly highlights the acoustic dimension of the instruments. It is worth stressing
that these eight pieces are also very popular with singers, who have often given extraordinary
versions of them. I would mention Frank Sinatra, Shirley Horn, Johnny Hartman,
Helen Merrill, Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, June Christy and Mark Murphy, and I could
go on. What does this mean? Simply that the great soloists have always thought about the text
when tackling a song, as a way of accessing the essence of a piece and developing their improvisations
to best effect. Here the trio follows this strategy with perfect success. The outcome is a
set of little gems, in which each of us will find the one closest to his or her own sensitivity. You
are spoilt for choice. My own favourites include the magnificent duet “Beautiful Love”, the discreet
and elegant swing of “You’d Be So Nice”, and the romantic ballads “For Heaven’s Sake”
and “Here’s That Rainy Day”, which must be one of the most beautiful themes ever written.
Let me finish with a piece of advice: do not listen to this CD in your car or as background to
some other activity. Allow yourself forty minutes to relax and listen to this CD on a top-quality
audio system. Settle down in your favourite armchair, with nothing else to distract you.
The time will fly by and you will see the world around you with different eyes.

’’A música do Oriente Médio sempre esteve presente na minha vida. Minha mãe, nascida em Aleppo, na Síria, colocava fitas K7 de música árabe quando eu era pequeno. Tive contato pela primeira vez com a música Etíope há uns 10 anos, quando um amigo colocou um CD gravado sem nome e sem capa para ouvir. Nesse momento, fiquei totalmente hipnotizado por essa música, com um dialeto semita
parecido com as músicas que minha mãe escutava. Era uma espécie de James Brown árabe cantando num andamento distinto com escalas misteriosas e poderosíssimos arranjos de metais.A partir desse dia, comecei a pesquisar e tentar descobrir de onde é que vinha esse tipo de música, até que um dia ouvi uma coletânea em vinil feita por um selo francês e ali estavam as respostas para minhas perguntas. Finalmente tinha encontrado a origem daquela música misteriosa. Vinha diretamente Etiópia!Após minha descoberta, nomes como Alèmayèhu Eshèté e Mulatu Astatkè passaram a fazer parte do meu set nos bailes de jazz, na época do Clube Berlin, na Barra-Funda, onde era residente. Mesmo não entendendo o que se fala na música, a forma como esses artistas cantam é muito expressiva. É essencial como repertório e bagagem cultural para o desenvolvimento da minha produção pessoal. Essa mix resume a minha pesquisa de músicas da Etiópia, um material bem específico selecionado especialmente em vinil para você viajar sem sair do lugar.’’

Musically here... I just play what I feel and like, like many. Translating _it_ into the best sound I could do at the moment, hoping to let out some of grooves and vibes boiling my head constantly. Might be messy, bumpy, puzzling, but this is what it is. By design. Crystal Ripples continues my "Impressionism in Music" series. I love to induce and provoke, rather than impose. All for creative listening experience, so we collab, co-create.... Thank you.

Fender Stratocaster finger picking and (slightly) distorted basslines and twangs. Tones are using Line 6 hardware Pod XT. Post Line6 and IK Multimedia Amplitube.  Korg Synths, including Gadget tool Brussels, which solemnly soloing at 0:50. All synths sounds transitions achieved by playing physical knobs on my Arturia controller. All 37 lines of guitars, perc, synth total are assembled in Ableton Live 9 and mastered with IK Multimedia.

I've opened for internationally known jazz  icon(Dave Brubeck)with drummer Steve Chanin (Steve is mentioned in the book "Otis Redding - An Unfinished Life, because of his connection to Phil Walden of Capricorn Records), and bassist Mack Gordon, both of Macon, GA , worked with Jaimoe,  worked with Donn & Larry Finney who were the horn section for the Gregg Allman Band circa 1982, worked with Irv Cox (tenor saxophonist with Louis Jordan & session player for Jefferson Starship on their hit Miracles 1975), worked with Baatin  www.baatin.com(multi-instrumentalist member of Parliment/Funkadelic).
