For the eleventh episode of There Is No Planet Earth Stories, I'm joined by guest DJ Odi representing stories from New York

Odi (Digital Konfusion, Konkrete Jungle)Bronx-born Carlos “Odi” Castillo is not only one of the most highly-respected DJs in the stateside jungle scene, but in great part responsible for its stylistic
evolution in NYC. He got his big break after high school, when promoting for the famous mid-90’s NASA rave parties grew into a steady DJing slot. Back then, the 90’s electronica wave was called
“breaks” or “techno,” until Odi and some childhood friends who shared a lifestyle, culture and musical interest began pumping out electronic records withtheir own signature twist. 

 Having grown up on 125th street in Harlem, Odi began to introduce the hip hop
elements that helped create and push the jungle sound. It has been the defining style of NYC and the east coast in general since 1997, when the Digital Konfusion crew formed their own eponymous record label and began spinning at NYC’s most dedicated
weekly jungle party: Konkrete Jungle. Being taken in
by the new born JUNGLE SKY Imprint, as well as being the jungle/DnB buyer at Satellite records gave Odi the chance to stay ahead of the curve with promos on the regs, leading to a position as an import buyer at Nemesis music Distribution.

Eventually Odi caught the ears of TC IZLAM, the international spokesman for the respected Hip Hop society Zulu Nation. He was initiated in 2003, making him the first junglist to enter the organization. Touring regularly Odi and the Digital Konfusion Crew have remained prolific ever since, Dj’ing across the nation
and producing for multiple other artists. Odi’s home base is now in the Cincinnati area where he exists under the thumb of his cats Edward and Nola.

I'm excited to share the DJ portion of my recent set from the "Show and Tell" radio show on YerbaFM. Playing on this episode was a last-minute surprise for me when I got a call from my buddy day-of letting me know he wasn’t going to be able to make the show.
 
I didn’t mention it on air, as it was still a tender moment, but earlier that week, I had experienced a loss in my family. In response, I had put together a digital box of tunes to take home to Missouri titled "Family" that honored both my biological and chosen families.
 
When I first heard of the cancellation I reflexively went for my bag of records, feeling overwhelmed with stress from not being fully prepared. But then I remembered I had this drive of tunes that I was so excited to take home and play for friends. Why not play it on the show?  So I went for it, and I’m happy I did. Listening to the mix brings up so many memories of my people, both here and gone.  
 
A few standout tracks that hold deep personal meaning for me:
 
White Love (Scott’s Psychic Masturbation Mix) - One Dove
Scott Hardkiss will always be one of my heroes, and the early Hardkiss records are central to my rave identity. I wanted to start the show by honoring both my own raving experiences and to remember those who are no longer with us. The track’s sample from Rumble Fish nails the vibe by suggesting the conscious choice we can make to reject the future of our certain death in favor of living our lives.  
 
We Are Structure (Len Faki Remix) - Structure
 This one has been with me since day one (it was on my first mixtape) and still hits deep, especially with its “we worship in the church of our choice” sample. It’s a long-time favorite, deeply connected to my roots in rave culture and my Drop Bass Kult family.
 
Radioactivity (Live) - Kraftwerk
 Travelling to Chicago with my homies to see Kraftwerk for the first time was an unforgettable experience. This version of Radioactivity from the tour we saw, along with Numbers and Pocket Calculator, are always in my box. Kraftwerk. It works every time. 😊
 
Unique 3 - The Theme
This one brings back so many memories of my good friend Joel who’s no longer with us. The angelic vocal in the track always reminds me of ascension and the fleeting nature of time. It brings me to tears every time, recalling his passing and more so the friendships that have grown since then.

This month's podcast features long time Innerflight inspiration Tom Of England.  The man has gone by many names over the years. Mammal, Welcome Stranger, (1/2) of Rub and Tug just to name a few... But none as recognizable and beloved as DJ Thomas of the legendary Wicked Crew. To call him an inspiration is putting it lightly as he may have been responsible for putting out the mixtape that changed EVERYTHING for certain members of Innerflight.  We have the honor and privilege of hosting him this Saturday, June 8th at the Monkey Loft for our Drop monthly.  Joining him on the decks are Innerflight residents J-Sun and Rhines. We'll also be celebrating both of their birthday at the shindig so come on down and help them party down proper for the occasion.
