Young Echo's soundsystem enthusiast turns in a 46-minute set bursting with unreleased dubplates and collaborations.

The development of the various members of the Young Echo collective has provided some of the most interesting music to come out of Bristol over the past few years. Though the collective continues to grow in number, one artist who has been there since the beginning is Cris Ebdon, best known in the early days of Young Echo as one half of Zhou with Amos Childs. Together the pair released a number of standout 12”s on Punch Drunk, an EP on A Future Without and a collaborative cassette with Vessel on Astro:Dynamics, all of which fused the influence of classic dub with more ethereal textures, creating dark, complex dubstep-influenced music that felt like the logical continuation of the Skull Disco legacy.

Despite the pair being a core part of Young Echo’s early identity, recent years have seen Ebdon begun to develop his solo project, Ishan Sound. Taking more direct inspiration from Bristol’s rich soundsystem culture, and combining unsettling mystical melodies with strong bass pressure, Ebdon has been cutting his own solo dubplates since 2011, with the project’s official debut appearing on the label arm of Stokes Croft party Peng Sound early in 2013. Teaming up with local soundsystem veteran Ras Addis, “Clash Of The Titans” was a deadly steppers track, joined later that year by a similarly authentic 7”-shaped slice of dub on ZamZam Sounds. However, the project's breakthrough to wider recognition came last year, when Ebdon released the brilliant Namkha 12" on Pinch's Tectonic label.

With each of Ebdon’s solo releases offering some of the finest soundsystem music to come out of Bristol in recent years, we jumped at the chance to see in 2015 with an Ishan Sound podcast. The resulting 46-minutes sees Ebdon delve deep into his collection of unreleased dubplates for a mix that largely forgoes the music of other artists for unreleased solo tracks and vocal collaborations with Rider Shafique and Jabu. Ebdon also took the time to answer a few questions about the project's background, the state of soundsystem culture in Bristol and the Ishan Sound live show that has been turning heads of late.

Hans started off his career in 2006 when he began to promote his own party in Glasgow called 'Sleaze' where he booked and played alongside the likes of Andrew Weatherall, Funk D' Void, Chloe, Radio Slave, Johannes Heil, Extrawelt, Phil Keiran, Len Faki & Par Grindvik! At the start of 2007, Hans started learning about music production and making his own tracks. He now boasts releases on many recognised labels including Electric Deluxe, Perc Trax, Viva Music, Soma, Synewave, Harthouse, 8 Sided Dice, Analytictrail aswell as starting his own label Sleaze Records. Over the years Hans' tracks have gained regular support & plays from some of the biggest names in Techno, including Richie Hawtin, Dubfire, Adam Beyer, Chris Liebing, Len Faki, Ben Klock, Speedy J, Laurent Garnier, Stephan Bodzin, Joris Voorn and many more! 

Hard work and dedication has ensured that Sleaze Records is now placed firmly as one of the best techno labels in the UK, if not the world. Hans is also making a big impact as a travelling DJ, with impressive DJ sets at the infamous Berghain in Berlin, the Slam Tent at Scotland's biggest festival T In The Park, Melkweg in Amsterdam and many other clubs & festivals across the globe. At only 25 years old and already with so much experience as a DJ, Producer & Label Manager, the future looks bright for Hans Bouffmyhre.

2015’s first release on the reverse Livity Sound label (dnuoS ytiviL) comes courtesy of Paris based artist Simo Cell. 
dnuoS ytiviL has navigated the undercurrents of the UK style melting pot for the last three years with the aim of releasing tracks that complement the output of its sister label. 
2014 set the bar high with releases from Hodge (Amor Fati / Renegades) and Bruce (Just Getting Started / Tilikum) which were ubiquitous across dance floors over the year. This new 12” keeps up the pace, seeing the debut release of Simo Cell, who’s fuzzy percussive grooves and stealthily paced bare bones rhythms perfectly complement the label aesthetic whilst defining an identity and vision of his own.

Merkava brings artist 'Coerce' his first solo release, showing Utopia aren't as elitist as some may think. Think D Bridge getting into the studio with Mako and you are not far from the truth with this one. 

UM018 represents a rebirth for Utopia. Up until now it has been a strict vinyl policy for all releases, but with the amount of music they are sitting on, the decision has been made to get some of it out there to make room for more signings. The EP is diverse but retains the Utopian ethic which we have come to love, tight production, at home on the radio or dancefloor, and the largest bass weight.
