Joining me this month for episode 43 is Christina Sealey: producer, live performer, and one half of Canadian industrial techno duo @Orphx.

Christina and music partner Richard Oddie founded Orphx back in the 90s, early on using what few instruments they’d collected: a reel-to-reel tape machine, some microphones, and an effects pedal to craft the kind of visceral sound they’ve since become celebrated and loved for. Slowly, they added in more instruments: analog gear, software, but also primitive pieces like sheets of metal, drills, kitchen utensils, razors… Anything they could manipulate to their creative liking. Their intense and often raw style of music is a kind of meeting point between rhythm and noise, with works like Pitch Black Mirror, Division, and Fragmentation leading the charge. 

In this conversation, Christina and I discuss her love of primitive instruments, the creativity of limitations, and how to make music with what you’ve got.

Tefnect is a producer and a label owner of Hojoiwa based in Tokyo Japan, skillfully manipulates hardware such as modular synth for live sets. Also working as a graphic artist for a long time, that is why inspiration from visual side involves in own sound with psychedelic polyrhythm and grooves in low frequency range. Rynzler (@alfio111)- Italian based live performer who loves noisy and metal sounds. After a few years marked by frequenting club scene in Italy and part in Berlin he started facing with live in 2018 influenced by a more melodical style in 2020 he moved to modular setup where he strated to research noisy and distorted sounds with a slice of industrial and drone/ambient.

Following the Peace Obscured EP by BOKEH, his joint venture with Anthone, Katsunori Sawa sets yet another mark on The Weevil Neighbourhood with his first full-length solo artist album on the label. Titled Secret of Silence the eight tracks-spanning work of Kyoto based Sawa drills through Japan Techno, Industrial Breaks and Noise while flirting with Breakcore and a more aggressive take on Dub.

Katsunori Sawa has been with the label for pretty much four years now with solo projects as well as joint ventures (besides the aforementioned BOKEH, he's also part of Steven Porter with his brother in arms Yuji Kondo with whom he also runs their own 10 label). His musical career reaches back another few years when he was writing and producing under EOC (short for Enormous O'Clock), including an album for Ai Records.

The release comes as a limited edition 12" record on black vinyl with artwork by L.A. based Lee Noble (No Kings Records/ Bathetic). 50 copies come on transparent/smokey vinyl and are sold through the label's shop exclusively.

Dimitris Doukas is a young talented Greek producer currently residing in the island of Corfu. He is the man behind the aliases Plaggona, Restive Plaggona and Matriarchy Roots. Plaggona is a Greek word meaning doll that kids play with and Restive Plaggona denotes the doll that is stubbornly resisting control.  
Under his many aliases, he counts numerous releases on various labels such as Moral Defeat , Collapsing Market, Yerevan Tapes, DVNTT as well as his own label Several Minor Promises. His releases come in either very limited runs of tapes or digital files.

A long period of b2b sessions culminated in the two artists merging their talents together to launch a new musical journey under the name of Tapefeed.
The soundscapes reproduced by Tapefeed evoke a truly raw, deep and almost mesmerising sensation created by the blending of hypnotic ambient tones with techno-tribal percussions, heavy basslines and emotional melodies. Their ever-evolving sound comes as the pinnacle of years of musical research shared by the duo. Alessandro’s decade-long experience as a music and art director, event organiser and avid music listener are essential in keeping Tapefeed’s image and sound up to date. Rick’s background as a drummer in rock and funk bands and his recent ventures in piano studies and production, on the other hand are the driving force behind their innovative sound. This merging of their passion, musical experience and innate desire to achieve new sounds allowed the duo to broaden their horizons by being the brainchilds of Tales Collective, where they are resident djs and organisers. 
Tales Collective aims to explore music, art and human consciousness by moving it away from its seemingly prefabricated one dimensional view and into a realm of shared, collective awareness. This brings forth a new breed of techno parties in which different artistic expressions fuse together to create a powerful, reflective and unique audiovisual experience

Biography:
OPERANT is the collaboration between Instruments Of Discipline founder Luna Vassarotti and August Skipper, the project exists in a unique realm, passing between power-electronics, industrial, techno and dark ambience, exploring themes of gender, body morphology and its ability to be altered through violent reconstruction, psychic and psychological manipulation, a crushed, robotic transcendence, where wounds in the body become gateways to other spaces; voice, synths and field recordings meld into a rhythmic ritualistic schism.
