With Gilbert Cohen alias Gilb’R, you would even have to speak of a calling. From his days as a musical programmer and DJ for the legendary Parisian station Radio Nova to his productions, remixes and partnership with I:Cube as Chateau Flight and maybe most important with Versatile Records.

This is the Second Anniversary Tape which was recorded live by Lenny Fontana from the radio that happened live at the Paradise Garage which aired January 1979 on WBLS FM New York with DJ Larry Levan, Frankie Crocker, Dan Hartman and Loletta Holloway, Sylvester and Mcfadden and Whitehead.  Along with fellow DJ Eddie Gordon and Mike Morin Legends of the Dancefloor was created. Thank you BBC for all your support on this.

BBC Legends Of The Dancefloor - A Tribute To Larry Levan Paradise Garage 2nd Anniversary Tape 1979

Recorded in 1988 at Bar Lézard 1988, re edited in 2023

Depending at which point I started the cassette to record we miss the first part of songs which I add in and edit some real shaky transitions,but not too many because that’s how it was, not always perfect, but loud, in the club, it created the magic, but listening with headphones, those imperfections comes out and are more noticeable and being the chance taker that I was I dared often to risk executing quite the hard mixes between songs and styles.

Contains lots of acid house and the usual lézard off the wall mixture

First one an acid classic, get real, from Paul Rutherford, a member of Frankie goes to Hollywood.
The simple minds mixed in quite well I though, then mod, then it’s my life, talk talk, then midnight summer dream from the stranglers which was a Jean denis favourite that he made me discover and love.
Then comes Marc Almond, from Soft Cell, with one of my favourite extended version of tears run ring.
Then I think new order comes in, everything’s gone green, after, Les Rita Mitsouko mixing in with 
Le Petit Train. Then a rock psychedelic moment with black widow,
Front 242, Jesus is here, you don’t have to be poor anymore 12” welcome to paradise. Then one of the first lil louie in acid clash, a big classic, with fantastic long long blend with yello the race, then another yello track, then Phuture, your only friend, dark song kinda acid but not about cocaine, then trisomie 21, the last song, then Peter Murphy, then on an exotic vibe which I really loved to bring in for different flavouring, el muhamar, touch el Arab, really amazing one I really love.
The back to acid with Jesus loves the acid, house with wok the bone, which set the dance floor on fire every time, let’s work… more acid, with the outstanding sharp as knife from Roxanne shante, really loved that one a lot a lot. Ending with the twilight zone, very Jamie principal, but not him, great underground one, the party boy.

This is my performance at Stereo Nightclub in Montreal, for the Osheaga After party.

Iniatially only Laurent Garnier was billed for this event, but, with a 12h notice, got called to play after Laurent.

When I arrived at 4h00 am, the line up was HUGE!The place was Packed!

Laurent Played a wonderful varied set of quality upfront techno, house, tech house.

The vibe and atmosphere was absolutely fantastic, the receptivity of the crowd to the various styles was very inspiring.

I had such a good time playing a long extended set, being really myself playing all these different styles, seeing so many people enjoying themselves was pure euphoria.

My set is is very much myself going from one style to the next, playing some older house & techno classics in between.

In this part you can hear me play Laurent Garnier's Crispy Bacon, Tres Demented(made with carl craig) because I didn't hear him play them.

Massive tribute in the intro and break to DJ Sneak. The first DJ Sneak track I ever heard and bought sampled this lovely Gamble & Huff Jacksons tune (although at the time I was very naive and had no idea where the sample came from).

With this mix I've tried to use the full song and also pay a bit of a tribute to the DJ Sneak version  which I encourage everyone to go and buy:

I only recently found where Sneak had sampled the percussion from and grabbed a larger sample for the final minutes of this mix (it sounded wrong without it)...discover it for yourselves!

Robert has many sides to his musical colors, from house, to disco house, tech house, minimal, techno and other weird stuff reflected in his dj sets and his productions

Here you have many of his first productions dating from 1993 until now

Holding a " legendary " status, leaving his mark as a pioneer being one of the first playing house music (in montreal, canada), then, being a major player in starting the techno/rave movement(in montreal, canada), his name is a symbol of talent, success and a continuously renewed vision of an irresistible and universal sound.

He stands out by being a trend setter for many styles of electronic music. 

Born Canadian, originally from Montreal, lived nearly 14 years in Europe (Holland and Germany).

He was amongst, and maybe, one of the 1st Canadian dj to introduce " House music" in Montreal's club around 1986. 

Later on, a major player in starting the techno and rave movement in Canada, then being one of the first Canadian dj to go play to other cities and move to Europe.

Robert has written record reviews for Canadian, American (Street sound, Trance 5000) and German music magazines (Raveline, Loop) and interviewed: Orbital, Gravitational arch of ten, Acid Junkies, Miss Djax, Stefan Robbers, Robert Armani, and Aphex twin.

He was also one of the first Canadian dj to play at more than just one club in the same city, and also one of the first to get booked as "Guest Dj "  to other cities, and also one of the first, to go dj in Europe and move there.

In 1993, leaves Canada for Europe , able to fully express himself musically without compromise, to, at that time, a more open and responsive European audience, but also to live in Europe long enough to really experience the difference in the cultures, produce, run labels and a lot of dj around every weekend, sometimes even, 2-3 events in one long night. The long unconstrained European club/event opening hours being another reason for leaving Canada and wanting the full European experience.

In Europe, first in lived Maastricht in THE NETHERLANDS (HOLLAND) and then in Köln (Cologne) in GERMANY.

Now based in Montreal.

Often ahead of his time and " avant-garde " & risk taking with his approach, the style he plays developed into a mastery at introducing new music to different types of people. 

His personal taste range is broad and he's open for the new, unexpected, but also loves beautiful, fun party music of quality. With years of experience playing to unknown crowds in different countries, versus being a resident dj for many years at notorious clubs in Montreal, he developed the awareness to be present in a club situation and have a good balance between the new, the fun and beautiful, to bring a quality vibe, that's what dj  basically is all about regardless of the styles being played, telling a story and finding ways to also connect with the audience. 

Versatile in styles he plays and produces. House, Tech House, Acid House, Deep, vocal, Techno. Robert loves to discover and research, so the music he plays is fresh and upfront.

He plays either sets of a certain type or concentrates on a specific style for a theme night or venue/crowd. 
House Sets, Tech House, Acid, Techno and sometimes Classic House or Classic Techno, Classic Disco, Garage, Nu Disco, New Wave.
