So Nah so fern I et II

An incident wave is any kind of wave (sound, ocean, shock, etc.) traveling away from its source. After an initial loss of energy, the wave will continue unabated until it encounters a resistance, whether an object, a load, or a distant shore. In its stable state, the wave can cross dramatic distances, conveying energy from one far-removed place to another without displacing the matter between them. Experienced, for instance, on a windswept beach on the central California coast, such waves are reminders of the deep interconnection in the world; between matter and energy, between distance and proximity, between observer and observed.

Songs of Empty Landscapes is a piece in 7 short movements. The piece was inspired by minimalist photography, specifically the nature images of Bruce Percy. These photographs depict a variety of different ‘empty’ landscapes from white snowy plains to vast deserted lands. 

In the music, I attempted to capture some of the vagueness, emptiness and apparent simplicity that these photographs, or indeed, any empty landscape evokes. Each movement is a piece of its own providing a window into one landscape, yet musical material is shared throughout the whole work. All movements deal with melody and lyricism, hence the reference to a song in the title.

I - Prelude opens the piece with the lonesome singing of the violin.
II - A thick texture dominates Haze. This is punctured by ringing chords, like church bells sounding in the mist. 
III - Snowriver is an abstract depiction of a cold running river in deep winter. 
IV - Lullaby is a slow, wistful piano trio. 
V - Earth Red is inspired by barren, scorched desert landscapes. 
VI - In Grey-Blue the fragile, melancholic soundworld, reflects upon undulating hills of snow-covered lands.
VII - Postlude concludes the work, with the low humming of the cello.

Robert Lemay has composed many works and received numerous international awards. Among recent honors include the second prize from the International Competition Prize Luxembourg 2007 and the second prize from the Kazimierz Serocki 10th International Composers’ Competition 2006. Other international prizes include the first prize from the 2004 Harelbeke Muziekstad Wind Ensemble Competition in Belgium. In addition, Lemay received three prizes from the CAPAC (presently SOCAN).

His music draws its inspiration primarily from poetry, literature, cinema, visual arts, political or social events and includes two series of tributes; one to filmmakers and another to abstract painters. 

Lemay has been performed in Canada, the United States, Asia (Japan, South Korea and Thailand), Europe (Austria, France, Denmark, Spain, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovenia, Luxembourg, Poland, Belgium and Scotland), South America (Argentina, Brazil and Venezuela), Mexico,  Israel & Australia. Many of his pieces have been broadcast on Société Radio-Canada, CBC, Bavarian State Radio, European Broadcasting Union (Luxembourg), Polish National Radio, Österreichischer Rundfunk (ORF) in Autria and ABC Classic FM (Australia). Twenty of his pieces appear on 18 different CDs in Canada, Europe and USA.

Lemay holds a doctorate degree in composition from the Université de Montréal a master’s degree from Université Laval. He also studied at the State University of New York at Buffalo, and has worked with David Felder and taken part in seminars with Brian Ferneyhough, Louis Andriessen, and Donald Erb. In France, he worked with François Rossé in Bordeaux and Georges Apergis at the ATEM in Paris.
