Great layering of all-female voices, poignant without trying. Especially enjoyed the ending.

Great sound and singers, but repetitive, why not move up a third or  a second on each rep?

This must be an equal mixture of fun and difficulty to perform! Really sweet!

Though I admit, I'd be remiss if I didn't take the chance to oppose that fist, the iron. The ring to it... defy. Deny. How much is accurate?

Not one single part
I'll doubt and criticize now go ahead and call me the devil. 

The pious, the righteous, and divine.... imagine... imagine their surprise when confronted by reality, when they have to make the choice.
To remain honest- to retain integrity, or to throw away our progress and lose sincerity. To keep up all the pretense to hold on to belief in unreliable impossible nonsense, to stay down on their knees. Get real.

Appealing to emotion. Imagined consequence. Don't try to verify at all. How much makes sense?

Not one single part. 
I'll doubt and I'll criticize. It deserves no less. 
I don't believe you. Now go ahead and call me the devil.

PROGRAM NOTE

During the summer of 1998 I taught at The Walden School for young composers in Dublin, New Hampshire. One of the traditions at this school is the singing of canons, particularly before meals. These simple canons are intended to be used for this tradition.

Although the name of this school has no relation to Walden Pond (where Thoreau wrote Walden), The Walden School has been located at the beautiful campus of the Dublin School, a location where I think some of Thoreau’s writings could equally apply.

The text is adapted from quotes from Walden by Henry David Thoreau.

American composer Robert Paterson is a true New Yorker—born and bred in Buffalo, he lived in Rochester and Ithaca for over ten years, in New York City for over twenty years, and now lives in Saratoga Springs, near the Adirondacks. Paterson’s colorful music embraces a wide variety of themes, everything from goddesses and online dating to mathematics and the environment. His music is filled with emotion and fierce rhythmic energy, marked by elegance, wit, and meticulous craftsmanship. Named Composer of The Year by the Classical Recording Foundation at Carnegie Hall, Paterson is the winner of the Alfred I. DuPont Award, and his opera Three Way won the Grammy® under Best Classical Producer of the Year. His music is often a Best of the Year pick on National Public Radio. His orchestral tone poem, Dark Mountains, regularly airs on NPR’s Performance Today. Three Way premiered with Nashville Opera, then BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music), and across the United States. Minnesota Orchestra, Louisville Orchestra, The Oratorio Society of New York, Buffalo Philharmonic, Albany Pro Musica, Albany Symphony, Musica Sacra, Austin Symphony, Vermont Symphony, and ensembles worldwide perform his works. Paterson gives masterclasses at the Curtis Institute of Music, New York University, the Aspen Music Festival, the Cleveland Institute of Music, and more.
