A treat! The sax is the stream of consciousness in what I imagine to be a dystopian future detached from nature. The percussions are like the interruptions from our senses. A delightful avantgarde cinematic journey that shows how far we've come since Peter and the Wolf. Perhaps too far?

mother's Love

When I start playing "Pale Memories Of Wisdom," I gently press the piano keys, letting each note breathe and find its place in the air. I want you to know, as a listener, that this is not just a melody; it’s like an open window into thoughts lost in time, where pale memories and moments filled with hidden meaning reside.

As the piece unfolds, you might sense a subtle sadness, but it’s a sadness filled with respect, with quietness. It’s as if each note touches a hidden corner of the soul, where we keep what once was and still hold dear. I’ve chosen chords that resonate subtly, like a whisper or a distant echo from someone who’s learned to look back without regret.

In the middle sections, you may feel a gentle warmth, hope slipping between the notes like a ray of light filtering through autumn leaves. This is the part where, even in moments of deep silence, I feel there is a future waiting to be discovered.

As the piece nears its end, I return to the main theme, softer now, as if putting a period on a story that will remain, from now on, in quietude. Maybe what I played is about me, maybe it’s about you, but I hope each note accompanies you in your own memories, your own inner journey.

PROGRAM NOTE
Machines are slowly overtaking mankind; they are beginning to possess a life of their own. Androids, humanoids, computers, four-wheel vehicles, and other machines are weaving their way into our lives in both obvious and subtle ways. People in developed societies depend on them for their lives. As hypothesized in many science fiction books and films, our massive expansion of technology will eventually create machines with free will: they will be able to think and feel and will have the power to ultimately destroy us. If too many are given the power of reasoning, they may decide that we need to be terminated; we are creatures with many flaws.

Humanus Ex Machina is a work about the hypothesized, eventual downfall and deterioration of humankind resulting from being overthrown by machines. The three percussionists represent the machines and play traditional percussion instruments and “found objects” such as computer floppy disks and brake drums. Humankind, represented by an alto saxophonist, senses that mankind is about to be wiped out by its creations and triumphs over them with the greatest weapon of all, the human mind.

Welcome to #6 in the music series "Of Fire and Ice" - Music of Norse Mythology. What did the Gods hear during their adventures? Listen to the distinct sounds of pagan frame drums and soaring targelharpa ‘fiddles’, flutes and the harp-like lyre. All this blends with orchestral instrumentation, sounds of nature and the soaring sounds of trumpet of James Hill's trumpet.

In the Norse myth "Binding of Fenrir," the gods grow fearful of the wolf Fenrir, a monstrous son of Loki. To prevent him from causing destruction, they trick Fenrir into being bound by an unbreakable magical chain called Gleipnir. Fenrir, suspicious, agrees to be bound only if one god places a hand in his mouth as a pledge. Tyr bravely volunteers, and when Fenrir cannot break free, he bites off Tyr’s hand. Fenrir remains bound until Ragnarok, when he will break free and play a key role in the world's end.

This music is adapted from a soundtrack I did for OttawaStoryTellers.ca   Many thanks to them for the inspiration.
