PROGRAM NOTE
When I was growing up in Buffalo, NY, my parents had a great collection poetry books. My father taught at the same university as Irving Feldman, and my parents had a few of his books of his poetry—some of them given as gifts from Feldman. The poem The Biographies of Solitude struck me as being a very good poem to set to music.

Paradise

She was afraid there was no room for us.
“It’ll be fine”, I said, “we can adjust”.
She collects diamonds while I collect rust.

It seems to me we are spinning our wheels.
“It’ll be fine”, I said, “it’s no big deal”.
She calls it ‘borrow’, while I call it steal.

She was not first, and I knew it wouldn’t last, but I still held on.
She didn’t care, and I cared way too much to just let her go.
Might not seem fair, but what’s a man supposed to do?
You’d do the same if it was happening to you.
It’s time for a change - and we both know it’s overdue. It’ll be fine.

She knew my secrets, and kept them, I think.
“It’ll be fine”, I said, “just have a drink.”
She collects chains, but it’s missing a link.

I don’t suppose you perhaps changed your mind.
“It’ll be fine,” I said, “s’not hard to find.”
She calls it ‘ours’, but I call it mine.

She was not first, and I knew it wouldn’t last, but I still held on.
She didn’t care, and I cared way too much to just let her go.
Might not seem fair, but what’s a man supposed to do?
You’d do the same if it was happening to you.
