There’s not a huge amount of lyrical vocals on the new SAULT album, but it’s pure magic when they turn up. I made myself a DJ Tool of ‘Time is Precious’ to be able to play out as that end section is stunning. Not sure if it will stay up long, so grab it if you like it.

SAULT (frequently stylised in all caps) are a pseudonymous British music collective that make a mixture of rhythm and bluse, house and disco. The project is helmed by producer Inflo, best known for his work with Little Simz, Michael Kiwanuka, Cleo Sol, Jungle and Adele. Despite critical acclaim, Sault eschew interaction with the media, they have never played a live show, given an interview or released a music video in support of their music.

Greek producer Lex makes a welcome return to Bengoa’s B2 Recordings this March with his new single ‘Fast Jags’ backed with remixes from the label boss himself and Shall Not Fade regular Felipe Gordon.
Over the past few years Bengoa’s B2 Recordings has been carving out its signature sound with a back catalogue of material blurring the lines between House, Balearic-tinged Disco, and Techno, all of which have encompassed a deep and soulful aesthetic. Here the story continues with the label marking its tenth release and bringing fellow Greek artist Lex back into the spotlight.
Lex’s original mix of ‘Fast Jag’s leads, laid out across seven minutes with intricate organic percussion and a funk-infused bass groove running alongside Moog style synth licks and jazzy keys.
Bengoa’s ‘Raw Edit’ follows next, reshaping the original with a more dubbed out, gritty feel to the melodic elements before Felipe Gordon’s ‘Deep Funk Remix’ rounds things out, the Colombian producer adds him own mark here, extracting the core soul of the original while stirring in his own crisp drums, hazy stab sequences and ethereal pad flutters on top.'

The record was produced by Eric Hilton of Thievery Corporation, and has been featured on the radio through Distiller Promotions.

Since 2005 Jazz & Milk offers an experimental playground for international artists. On Ten Years of Jazz & Milk four exclusive tracks are brought to you by the likes of Sam Irl, Mieux, Todd Simon & The Angel City All Star Brass Band and label founder Dusty.

On the A-side label artist Sam Irl brings Dub culture onto electronic dance floors. Dreams is a forward driven introspective dub track built around a heavy steppas-influenced rhythm and deep bassline. Expect his full-length solo debut album to released later this year on Jazz & Milk!

Mieux is a young upcoming duo from Vienna known from their Boiler Room live performance or their debut EP on Up My Alley! With Technotrap they contribute a playful and dreamy uptempo tune that cleverly balances a straight-forward driven beat with harmonic and repetitive melodic figures.

Label head Dusty joins the EP with a slow-house MPC jam called Heavy Lights. After a dreamy intro the track soon fades into a hypnotic direction based on percussive vibes, big bottom samples and heavy hitting snares.

Todd Simon's arrangement, blending multiple versions of a classic for his 21-piece ensemble featuring himself on Flügelhorn and Alan Lightner on Steel Drums. Recorded live to tape in an 80 year-old studio located in the heart of Hollywood.

Born in Rio de Janeiro, he was suspended for Xangô ogã at eight years old, which became the awakening to a life dedicated to liturgical percussion. At age of 19 he moved to the United States, where he would remain for 17 years, playing with great names of salsa, Latin jazz, and Afro-Cuban folklore. Back in Brazil, he played and recorded with several Brazilian artists, from Nando Reis to Monobloco, from Ramiro Musotto to Baby do Brazil, from Humberto Gessinger to Pavilhão 9, etc. His first solo CD, "Bá" was nominated for the Brazilian Music Prize, and is now preparing to release his second album, "RITUAL".

Matasuna Records starts the new year 2020 with a brilliant release, featuring two contemporary tracks by Paris based Afrobeat band Batunga & The Subprimes, available for the first time on vinyl.

Batunga & The Subprimes was founded in Paris in 2009 by musicians from different backgrounds, united by the will to mix traditional African music with other elements (Latin, Jazz, Second Line and even Rock) and to bring this explosive mix on the streets & on stage. After many shows all over Europe and beyond, their first official album Man in the Field was published in 2017, followed by their EP Let dem In in late 2019. Matasuna has chosen two extraordinary cuts of these self-released albums to release them on vinyl for the first time.

Gates Of Ouantou from their EP is a great tune that sets the bar for contemporary Afrobeat and has all the ingredients for a timeless classic: the arrangement, the instrumentation and the interplay of the seven musicians in the song are excellent and will immediately draw you into its spell. A real gem and great tune!

Man in the Field on flipside is a cut of their first official album. Unusual is the use of a banjo in an Afrobeat song but not surprising that this fits in very well and also shows that classical structures can be broken up and developed in a new approach/context. Another great piece of this extraordinary band that has been operating under the radar - until now!
