Now, whenever you hear a 420 or weed mix, you're gonna hear a lot of the same and obvious songs; but with this one we steered away from the obvious hits and shined some light on some dope weed songs out there.

Everyone knows i love hip hop and i love to smoke trees. So why not put together a Weed inspired Hip Hop mixtape. I always wanted to put together a 420 mixtape. But the thing is... I'm not a DJ. So the first thing I had to do was find a DJ who likes to smoke trees (pause), but that seemed too easy sincee very DJ I know smokes trees. Then i came up with a stoner idea to ask Boogie Brown to do the mix because I wanted to see if someone who doesn't smoke lettuce can think like a pot head and put out a product that a stoner dude would appreciate. When you think about it majority of all weed inspired hip hop songs suck! So i did some digital digging and found some of the illest weed songs. I emailed Boogie Brown around 40 songs to work some of his magic. And then FLY THE FRIENDLY SKIES was born. Hope you all enjoy the mix. FLY HIGH! PS. i was gurped when i wrote this.


BOOGIE BROWN:
A lot of times, projects come to fruition from ideas that come out of the blue, and this was no different. This particular one went something like this:

Ben: "Dude, I'm gonna get started on a cocaine raps mixtape."
Ro: "Man, you should do one about weed. I know hella dope weed songs."
Ben: "Man, we should do a series dedicated to every single substance: crack, week, alcohol, etc."
Ro: "Fuck it, let's start off with a weed one and just release it on 420."
Ben: "You know what would be sick, if True released this with their 420 shirt."
Ro: "Lemme make a call and let's get this crackin."

Then came the concept:

Ro: "Hey man, Brian is gonna do the flyer for the release party and we need a name in an hour."
Ben: "Okay... How about 'blah, blah, blah', 'yadda, yadda, yadda', 'Fly The Friendly Skies'..."
Ro: "Man, I like 'Fly The Friendly Skies'." (Now keep in mind the context of time: We started the mix AFTER we even got the flyer for the release party.)

And so here we are. Songs hand picked by Get Live Ro and thrown together by myself.

So sit back, relax, and prepare for take off...

"When I grow up, I wanna be like Omar" - Stevie Wonder

There are precious few, if any contemporary UK artists whose creative credentials and influence extend as far and so consistently wide as Freestyle Records' most recent signing Omar. Since first breaking through to worldwide renown all the way back in 1991 with his first releases on Gilles Peterson's seminal Talkin' Loud label, and since going on to work with all manner of musical legends including a certain Stevie Wonder, Erykah Badu, Angie Stone, Syreeta Wright, Common, and Carleen Anderson.

Omar returns with a brand new album that many say is without doubt the strongest of his entire career. The buzz generated by the single release of the album's title track, The Man, confirmed beyond doubt that Omar is very much at the top of his game, with everyone from BBC 6 Music's Gilles Peterson, BBC Radio 2's Trevor Nelson and Jamie Cullum giving both major support and high praise for the simply magnificent new high point for Omar's renowned ability to write devastatingly catchy melodies.

Across the rest of this new album, opener Simplify sets the template, with its luscious and majestic string backed introduction raising the curtain on this deep, hard grooving number. Omar also joins forces with Germany's Hidden Jazz Quartett on High Heels - growling organ spars with the tough, jagged drumbeat on this tough, funk driven collaboration. Elsewhere, latin textures and rhythms have always been part of Omar's far reaching musical vocabulary, and on Come On Speak To Me and Ordinary Day restless south American beats underpin the crisp and fresh melodies.

Soul II Soul's Caron Wheeler offers her distinctive voice on the duet Treat You, allowing these two legendary voices to unite beautifully. Completing the circle that began all the way back in the early 1990s, Omar has re-recorded his classic love song There's Nothing Like This, which this time features bass player to the Gods Pino Palladino. The touching sentiment remains undiminished, but the addition of soaring strings, soulful, jazzy horns, a vibrant live and acoustic feel, plus an extended and new arrangement.

Forever a wildcat and wild card, Los Angeles’ bassist/songwriter/vocalist Stephen Bruner, aka Thundercat, is impossible to tame artistically. A true master of his craft, he can be found playing bass with Flying Lotus, Erykah Badu and Suicidal Tendencies, in the same breath as performing live with the likes of Stanley Clarke, Snoop Dogg or the Red Hot Chili Peppers. His 2011 solo debut (The Golden Age of Apocalypse, co-produced by Flying Lotus) created an equally genre-blurring enigma of indie rock and jazz, with a touch of electronica.

On his second album, Apocalypse, Thundercat pairs up with executive producer Flying Lotus to pull the veil back and reveal the simple truths of the cycle of life, for all its beauty and destruction. An album about loss and rebuilding, trying to gain something back, and capturing that moment of clarity where one finally finds feet back on the ground again. Bringing a fusion of pop, soul, electronica, prog rock and funk into an unexplored dimension, the album slowly descends and tunnels to the core of what it takes to grasp peace, at a time that it seems most far.

From the deep, rumbling entrance of ‘Tenfold,’ each of the 12 tracks coalesce with Thundercat’s signature bass, his riffs and basslines gliding sky high to meet Fly Lo’s astral touch. Bruner’s vocals and harmonies also soar with open honesty, rising above heartbreak with uplifting odes to love and companionship (‘Tron Song’) and wise mantras to live by (‘Special Stage’). The album plays as a comedy and tragedy at the same time, delicately addressing tracks like ‘We’ll Die’ while bringing the all-out cosmic funk of the anthemic ‘Oh Sheit, it’s X.’

As heavy as the lyrical weight may be, the divine musicality of Flying Lotus, and Thundercat’s instrumental collaborations, brings light. Navigating dense rhythms and intense harmonic progressions, the LP pushes through the hypnotic strands of ‘The Life Aquatic,’ the analogue explorations of ‘Lotus & The Jondy’ (recorded in Adrian Younge’s studio with drummer Thomas Pridgen), and Thundercat and Lotus’ prog rock jam ‘Seven,’ a spontaneous improv recording that organically materialized in less than an hour. It’s no wonder the kindred pair often refer to their freeform sessions as “going to space.” Continually pushing tracks to their furthest point, they take the listener to another place completely – somewhere beyond time, a place that transcends this realm. As the aforementioned track ‘Seven’ (named for its challenging time signature) asks, “Can you hear the sounds of infinity?”
