The other day I found myself playing Xbox on one tv, with a snowy backdrop and Christmas sounds on another.  Even though my joy of playing videos games is gone, I still retreat there at times because it takes me back to my childhood.  As we get older, I think we all crave that innocence of our early years, and resent the harsh realities of this world that over time, and sometimes swiftly, steal it away.

Matthew 18:2-4 says...
"Jesus invited a little child to stand among them. “Truly I tell you,” He said, “unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.”

The innocent mind of a child is the best representation of the love God calls us ALL to have for one another.  We are to love our neighbor as ourselves, as a child would. With innocence and grace.

But this world is intentionally trying to sabotage the innocence of our youth.  It has stolen MY INNOCENCE and YOURS.
It seems every day brings a new trial, but the more they come, the more the words written in James 1:2-3 resonate, "Consider it pure joy, my brothers, when you encounter trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance.”

The more we are tested, the more we are forced to draw closer to the Lord, and that faith brings strength and perseverance.
The alternative is letting it foster bitterness, resentment, pride, and separation from the childlike love that our Creator calls us to have for others; which is sadly what we see much evidence of in the world today.  

Some people would rather gossip behind a friend’s back, than to share truth in love with friends because it means having uncomfortable conversations at times.  But those conversations are when we SHARPEN one another and allow for GROWTH- spiritually and emotionally.  We are called to do that, and sometimes that means sharing tough love.

Sometimes I want to ask these questions when a friend is offended by my being honest with them…
Do you think I enjoy saying things that will hurt or offend you?
What do you think my intentions are?
Why do you think I am sharing what i am sharing?
Would you rather me gossip about you to others, and not be up front with you? 

Pride has an amazing way of letting us justify acting in ways unbecoming of a Christian.  He told us to FEED MY SHEEP.  You feed sheep by loving one another as He loved us, and sometimes love hurts, because truth hurts- but it’s the only way we grow.

The toughest lessons I’ve learned in life have come from being confronted with aspects of myself that i didn’t want to hear, feeling judged or belittled.  But without those moments I wouldn’t have grown and I thank God for them, and the people brave enough to confront in those moments.  (Not always with grace either, but God used nonetheless)

We can’t allow pride and comfort to protect our “innocence.”  We can’t hide behind “our own peace” when those around us have been afflicted by our words and actions.  Having a childlike innocence and speaking truth in love are necessary elements in this world if we are to become purified in our sanctification- to then become better reflections of Christ.

Are you willing to set aside your pride for the benefit of other children of God? Only then will you truly be serving Him.  Everything else is just works, which are dirty rags in the eyes of the Lord.

Malachi 3:2-4
"For He will be like a refiner’s fire, like a launderer’s soap. And He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; He will purify the sons of Levi and refine them like gold and silver."

We must allow the Lord to refine us humbly, through the fire...
We must come as children to the throne of grace…

I love when "new to me" bands reach out asking to check out their music out.  It's one of the cool aspects of running a metal podcast.  Vox Nostra dropped me a DM on Instagram about a month prior from the date of this release asking to check out their debut single "Façade".  Upon the pressing of the play button, the riff begins and I got drawn into blast beats and melodic tapping followed by some pretty brutal vocal arrangements.  After hearing the entire track, I hit them back asking them to save the Sunday because I had a cancellation.  Fortunately they were getting together for practice so it really worked out for everyone so Nathan Buckhoff (vocals) and Jay Ramirez (bass/band dad) joined me for an interview.

Vox Nostra is a brand new band, not to just me but, to everyone.  Formed back in May 2022, this 4-piece techdeath/melodic outfit of Houston, TX, Vox Nostra is trying to make their way in the local metal scene.  We started off by getting to know the members, what they do.  Nathan explains how he started is music career with a leap pad learning classical music to using his GI Bill to go to school for music.   Shout out to the Veteran's out there in and out of the music scene.  Semper Fi!

We chat about their plans as a band for the for foreseeable future, to include their debut show alongside Upon A Burning Body which is going down Dec 17th at Scout Bar in Houston, TX.  To know more about them as humans, Nathan is a commercial real estate agent and Jay is the musical director at The School of Rock in Houston, TX.  Jay lets us in on his teachings and instructing kids to adults and how to be successful in that space.

Jay's final comments don't age well about the Astro's.
